tw: racism, violence, references to lynching, and child death below

Does anyone else get the discomfort from the song "pick poor robin clean" in Sinners? You know how there are a lot of historically messed up songs that get hidden in plain sight. Like, people get "catch a tiger by the toe" because if you imagine why people had a song about "catching" "tigers" back in the day you'd instantly get the ugly impression. Sometimes there is so much in the modern language built off of killing Black people it blows my literal mind. Like how picnics became used for lynching, Black people liked butter pecan because it was illegal for them to buy vanilla ice cream, and the ice cream truck song is set the the old tune of the racist song "n----, love a watermelon, ha ha ha". You get used to it cause its around so often but even parades come from white people copying the celebrations of enslaved people who got time off when white people went to vote. Cops were invented to enforce jim crow and slavery practices and these things are still the function as if time froze for white people and they never learned their own history since.

But "pick poor robin clean" reminds me of the original five little monkeys. There is also a racist version of that song that uses Native people but the oldest version is called "ten little N-----" and has lines like "“Ten little n---- boys went out to dine;/ One choked his little self, and then there were nine.” Each of the original ten lines rhymed and described another horrific death of one of the imagined children. It's pretty graphic and brings to mind the memory of innocence lost like Emmitt Till and too many like him. Beyond the systemic prison and slavery system and the systemic school discipline practices (Nickel Boys) there is so much killing and gore that happened to young Black children it is hard to talk about. The practices that people can't stomach thinking about like chairs being full of enslaved peoples hair or the amount of babies thrown to animals always find a way to be saved in history by the efforts of evil, mean-spirted racists who can't help but have the last word.

In that scene, the kkklanmpires are putting on a show with all positive and friendly words that give it a double meaning only if you know what they are on the inside. And the way they fully knew that double meaning and took delight in misconstruing it in their face feels like a commentary on all of the evil and sneaky things white people actively do today. Like the people who pretend they don't see Black people voicing their discomfort about shipping remmick with Black characters but will do it so long as no one can definitely prove they are racist. They don't care or mind that they distress and hurt Black people daily because they've decided that is only morally wrong when they intentionally do it and so long as they can say they disagreed, misunderstood, or didn't know they'll keep doing it. The excuse is always given that people didn't know the songs or media used to be racist but the people who started all these things knew and made clear effort to hide it. No one accidently kept catch a tiger by its toe, people's grandparents and parents liked mocking Black death openly and in a way that weaponized their own children's innocence. Whenever this topic comes up people seem to think the priority is deciding if we should engage with these modern songs once we know their history but I don't think that matters as much as trying to deal with what this actually tells us about history.

How the Civil Rights Movement didn’t get started until after Black men came back from fighting in the U.S. military and recognizing what true freedom of movement was like and the irrational oppression not just in the South but also the North.

How weapons training and military strategy inspired community organizing. How our government didn’t protect the lives of Black Soldiers and inspired Hitler.

How the Great Migration was an internal displacement of people and a symbol of the social genocide in the Southern United States [read The Warmth of Other Suns for a beautiful contextualization of the Great Migration and how it changes Black American culture; I recommend the audiobook]

Every black woman who has been educated, argued cases, and climbed the corporate ladder in spaces where they are the only one or one of a handful felt what they watched during tonight’s debate on a cellular level. What’s seen as assertiveness and moxie in others so often gets labeled as “militant,” “aggressive,” or “angry” when witnessed from a black woman and it is absolute bullshit. 

Not only is it racist AF but it’s also peak misogyny. Witnessing women pushing this bullshit narrative is one of the saddest things of all.
