My friend @mageknight14 is bisexual and he thinks the whole queerbaiting thing on RWBY has gotten out of hand.
As for me, I just want people to shut up because they at least get representation. I’m Autsitic which is heavily seen as synomous with brain damage or mental retardation and I can only name one character that shares my condition….and said character is treated as an asshole for those traits.
The thing is: it kind of makes you seem spoiled that anything vaguely seeming homosexual as queerbaiting and demanding that LGBT ships become canon because they’re You think you see romantic hinting between two characters of the same gender and suddenly they must get together or else it’s wrong, ignoring that shippers have a tendency t read way too deeply into certain things to make them seem romantic as well as the fact that they do the same thing with heterosexuals and that’s fine but all of a sudden it’s not fine to do that with homosexuals. It makes the concept of wanting equality confused due to the expectation of special treatement.
I’m not trying to be mean here but the mere concept of queerbaiting is confusing as fuck to me: it’s like if I demanded every character with something that can be vaguely considered be Autistic have it or else I get made or that a show should have an Autistic character get in a relationship because they are that way. It just confuses the shit out of me and I’m just explaining why I’m against the concept.
As another bisexual I feel the need to pipe in here. I remember the most popular lgbt+ headcanons in the fndm were Blake and Sun are bisexual and Yang is pansexual. Interestingly enough the cry’s of “queerbaiting” reached its peak when Blake showed interest in Sun (showing that the bulk fndm doesn’t understand what bisexuality is, or annoyingly uses it as a convenience at best.) Most these claims came from, unsurprisingly, bumblebee shippers.
I’ve also seen people who will unironically say “Straight people shouldn’t write lgbt+ characters,” but then go after the writers who are, you guessed it straight. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is why they have held of on this subject, it’s a lose-lose situation right now.
