Thinking again about parental relationships in ML and how much they leave to be desired
Luka and Juleka had the deadbeat dada drama and it concluded with the father/son relationship being the only one that mattered and Juleka, who canonically was insecure about her relationship with Mr. Deadbeat, being not so much as a bullet note; not to mention having other characters ignore Anarka’s influence in their musical upbringing (ignoring moms becomes a running theme 🤪)
Chloé. Complete and total daddy’s girl except when she’s evil, in which case she’s her absentee mother’s daughter. Daddy’s responsible for the good, mommy for the bad. Excellent non sexist writing /s. Don’t wanna dwell on her.
With Marinette, I get the impression that she’s closer to her father than she is her mother, which by itself isn’t a problem, but then we compare the amount of individual characterization Tom and Sabine get (as in, when they’re not a monolith) and like. Tom gets all the personality while Sabine gets all the foreign mysticism and also is the emotionally stable/responsible one and apparently had 0 influence on Marinette’s upbringing whatsoever and I’m just tired of it. It’s a tired trope. Other salters can speak about the subject better. TL;DR: Tom is a character whereas Sabine is a caricaturistic space filler. Moving on.
That brings us to the most important parent/child relationship: Gabriel and Adrien. I’m gonna skip over most of the analysis for this one cuz it’s all been said already. Gabriel abuses Adrien. Adrien loves his father unconditionally. Emilie is somehow a nonfactor in all of this (see what I meant about a running theme?). Gabriel drops dead. Adrien still loves his father unconditionally and also is super chill with him being dead. Oh wait, did I say their relationship is the most important? My bad, I meant to say their relationship is completely inconsequential to the plot and that Gabriel’s motivations for pretty much everything could be explained through his obsession for his fridged wife and his perceived Ideal. These two could go the entire series without speaking to each other and nothing would change. In the grand scheme of things, these two don’t matter to each other’s alleged “arcs”; Gabriel is a selfish prick who supposedly redeemed himself… by being a selfish prick, and Adrien makes friends and allegedly grieves fantastically (if at all).
And it’s such a shame because each of these dynamics have so much to offer narratively but miss the mark by leagues. Dad = Good. Mom = inconsequential unless it’s Bad in which case it’s her fault entirely. It’s disappointing on its own for all the untapped potential and sexist as hell if you think about it for more than two seconds.

Funny and sad how Marinette is probably going to live all the adventures Adrien wants and he gets the relative peace she desperately needs
I have no doubt Adrien would love to go on magical adventures around the world instead of staying home and dealing with local superhero biz.
On the other hand, Marinette, who told everyone that she was going on a knitting retreat for a few days, has spent her weekend without sleep in the wilderness hiding from a moose while also trying to get a miraculous from its territory. She just wants her bed.
Adrien: I think it would be fun if we all took a wilderness survival class together! We’d have to hike all the way to the camp! Maybe even do some climbing! Camping!
Marinette, a dirty city slicker that already obtained all of those skills against her will, never wants to see another forests in this lifetime, and will shave her head if she has to fight a wild boar again: Uhh I’ll pass
Adrien is getting certified and licensed for everything he might need for future adventures, hopefully magic ones. The most adventurous thing he’s done so far is stay at a three (THREE!!!) star hotel.
Marinette has had every vaccination created by man, is wanted in three different countries under false identities, has multiple fake IDs ready along with rolls of foreign currencies a la Jason Bourne, and is tired of dealing with supernatural creatures.
Adrien: I think trying to find the Fenn Treasure would be a fun group adventure

why are time loops always only like 1 day long?
the real horror is a months or years long time loop. no speedrunning your torture here. you have to sit with the consequences of your actions for a loooong time before the release of knowing the consequences and actions have been erased.
but oh, all the actions and consequences are gone. those relationships you built? empty. you can never build them again without the constant guilt of knowing that it's not as real the second, third, thirtieth time when you already know all their secrets and they none of yours.
but you can't hide. you can't isolate yourself because what if this is the time the loop breaks and then what? years gone by of missed chances with people who have changed you a thousand times and now circumstances have changed. you can never build back what was washed away by your own inaction. they'll never be able to meet you like they did the first time if you don't choose to meet them the first time every time

I was reading over my fanfic notes/outline for What Has Been Given again, and I suddenly stumbled upon an old excerpt for the final chapter I wrote ages ago, back when I was first drafting a storyline. And oh boy am I excited to get to it!
Still don’t have the brain juice for a more comprehensive post but the show’s unfailing pattern of having the heroes take one step forward and two steps back during every part of their “journey” feels like it was meant to mock them and the ideals they stood for especially in retrospect when you know how the arc ends
ML feels like a magical girl show written by people who don't like Magical girl shows.
