Why are orcas often called Killer Whales?
Well, these unique animals - who aren't whales at all, but rather dolphins - are apex predators. An apex predator is an animal at the top of the food chain, and who therefore doesn't have a natural predator. This makes orcas terrifying to other animals, but that's not the reason for their nickname. The truth is, orcas are known for attacking and eating prey larger than themselves, like whales, sharks, seals, and more. During hunting, they gather in groups, corner their victim and attack, which made ancient sailors name the animal Asesina Ballenas, translating to Whale Killer, but over time the name changed to Killer Whale.
But orcas are usually friendly towards humans! Even though there have been recorded incidents of them attacking and flipping boats, but at most times, orcas try to avoid people. So as long as you keep fair distance, you should be fine!:D
This beauty here is a sailfish - a type of marlin, who holds the world record for the fastest marine animal!:0
They're split into two species, Indo-Pacific sailfish and Atlantic sailfish. An adult usually reaches around 3 meters (10 feet) long.
Despite their similarity to swordfish, sailfish are not related to them at all, although both of them have a rostrum - that long, sharp thing coming out of the upper jaw. A sailfish uses its rostrum to hunt down other fish!
This may look like some coral species, but it's actually an alive animal called sea sponge (porifera). It's a marine invertebrate that is commonly used to make bath sponges. It feeds by filtering water through its body and eating small organisms like plankton, bacteria etc.
Another cool thing about sea sponges is their ability of fragmentation - if a piece of a sponge tears off, that piece will grow into a new animal. It's one of their of asexual reproduction, and a very few organisms are able to do this.
These mind-blowing animals might be one of the oldest animals to ever exist, being older than dinosaurs by hundreds of millions of years. Unfortunately, they're still being hunted down for bath sponge manufacturing. Truly a unique kind of animal!:0
