The Beacon is on YOU! Lighthouse Day at the Marine Museum – August 15th, Noon – 3:00 pm,  Help solve a mystery!  Families are invited to meet at the Marine Museum to explore the delightful children's book, "The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch," then brainstorm with us to find ways to keep the lunch– which is stolen everyday – safe for the lighthouse keeper! Children (and adults) will also have a chance to make their own lighthouses. Cost: $5.00 per child, with a maximum payment of $25.00 per family.  Scouts & other groups welcome. Reservations encouraged!

MARINE MUSEUM at Fall River to host the First Annual Country Clambake

This will be a wonderful. traditional old fashioned clambake

under a tent at the property of Margot & Tom Cottrell

and their son, Jonathan Cottrell

at 17 Mattapoisett Avenue in Swansea.

The cost is $ 80 per person and is fully tax deductible.

The date of the Clambake is Saturday, July 26th at 3 PM

This follows the Colonial Navy Concert at the Museum being held at noon

Tiverton Chowder and a raw bar will be available at 3 PM

The bake will follow and includes a steamed lobster, clams, sweet & white potatoes, onion, sausage, hot dog,

melted sweet butter, brown bread & butter followed by sliced chilled watermelon.

Beer, Wine and Cider will be available at no cost

Come join us on the shores of the Lee’s River at the head of Mount Hope Bay to engage in eating,

drinking, enjoying one another’s friendship and helping the Marine Museum at Fall River in it’s quest

for survival.

“An American Icon Honored,” The Colonial Navy of Massachusetts & the Sailing Masters of 1812 will Present Colors to Celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner ~ June 15th: 2:00 pm        

Please join the Marine Museum, the Colonial Navy of Massachusetts, and the Sailing Masters of 1812 for a program created specifically to mark this bicentennial anniversary.  The presentation of colors will trace the history of the various flags flown by the Colonial Navy between 1775 and 1781, while the Sailing Masters will be presenting naval flags from the War of 1812.  All uniforms, flags, and equipment are authentic, and members of both organizations are well versed in the relevant history, which they will share with us.

Each militia will give a short history of its unit’s flags, demonstrating how they were carried and used historically; educational materials will also be available.

The Colonial Navy of Massachusetts, the official state militia, was formed in 1967 for the specific purpose of promoting the history of the Massachusetts State Navy, which operated off the New England coast and beyond from 1775 through 1781.  The present Colonial Navy is made up of Officers, Marines, Colors, and a Fife & Drum music unit.

Based in Essex, Connecticut, the Sailing Masters of 1812 is an ancient fife and drum corps founded in 1963 as the Essex Fife and Drum Corps.  Their mission is to perpetuate the ancient art of fifing and drumming, and to commemorate the role of Essex in the War of 1812.  The Corps uniform is that of the Sailing Master, the third ranking officer on board a ship-of-the-line of the United States Navy over the period 1810-1815, and is an authentic reproduction of that worn by Captain Stephen Decatur.

This program, sponsored by a grant from the Fall River Cultural Council, is FREE and Open to the Public. Join us for a truly unique experience!

What? Never been to a first-class wine-tasting? Now is your time! On this festive, fundraising evening, come join wines-of-Italy enthusiast, and Italy writer/traveler, Alan A. Amaral as he introduces the best of Italian wines to our local audience.

Alan, our host, is Italian speaking...and a well-traveled Italian American who is the founder of  Italian Wine Services). Alan has led many tours to Italy and its vineyards. Join us on this unusual occasion as he warms up to his tour of Sorrento and Rome, Italy (an event that will occur later this year to which you are invited) and introduces the best of Italian white and red wines from regions of southern Italy.

  This event will be catered by the well-known, distinctive Riccardi’s Italian Restaurant of New Bedford, where recipes are prepared “the authentic way, the Italian and the Sicilian way, like Mama Giovanna cooked...and like her Mama Nunziatta cooked for her.” Along with your delicious Italian wines, come prepared to enjoy a full Italian dinner buffet.

Dr. Robert Ballard at the MM was a huge success. A authentic Titanic dinner followed by an excellent presentation from the man who discovered the Titanic! Great food and great fun for everyone involved. Thank you Dr. Ballard, students, and attendee's for making this event a success. We hope to see you all again soon!

Hors d’ouevres To Delight Every Palate

       Join Us May 2nd For A Repast Sure To Please!

Haven’t purchased your tickets for our May 2nd fundraiser yet?  Then let us entice you by offering a peek at the delicacies upon which you will feast – hors d’ouevres that replicate the dinner menu served aboard Titanic on April 14, 1912.

This evening’s menu is the brainchild of local epicurean,   Jo Anne O’Neil.  Ms. O’Neil, a teacher at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School, challenged her Culinary Arts students to master the art of cooking created by master chef, Georges Auguste Escoffier; as a class wrap-up, these thirty students will share the honor of serving our guests.

Escoffier, a French culinary artist, is known worldwide as “the king of chefs and the chef of kings.”  He created the péche Melba (Peach Melba) featured on this evening’s menu in 1893, and named it and Melba Toast (1897) for Australian opera star Nellie Melba.  Other well-known Escoffier dishes include Cherries Jubilee, created to mark Queen Victoria's Jubilee, and Dauphine Potatoes, named for the French court of the Dauphine, among whom was Marie Antoinette.

According to Nathan Myhrvold, Escoffier “fought for the rights of all kitchen workers to receive medical care and pensions. It was his staff that perished in the Titanic; he had designed the elaborate menus for that ill-fated voyage. After the tragedy, he saw to it that the widows and children of that staff were well taken care of.”

"A cook is a man with a can opener," Escoffier once said. "A chef is an artist."  

Please join us as a new generation of young chefs present their own masterpieces … delighting you in the process and setting a perfect background for a history of the Titanic as presented by Bob Ballard.

MAY 2nd, JOIN US IN A VERY SPECIAL EVENT:

At the Marine Museum at Fall River, Come Hear Dr. Robert Ballard,  Oceanographer, Historian, & Explorer-- Best Known for his 1985 Discovery of the TITANIC.

At our upcoming, fundraising event, come hear one of the great explorers of our time...at the Marine Museum, Fall River. Dr. Robert Ballard has succeeded in tracking down numerous other significant shipwrecks, including the German battleship Bismarck, the lost fleet of Guadalcanal, the U.S. aircraft carrier YORKTOWN (sunk in the World War II Battle of Midway) and John F. Kennedy’s boat, PT-109.

His discoveries also include sunken remains of ships along ancient trade routes in the Mediterranean Sea; two ancient Phoenician ships off Israel, the oldest shipwrecks ever found in deep water; and four 1,500 year-old wooden ships, one almost perfectly preserved in the Black Sea. Dr. Ballard’s Black Sea project seeks evidence of a great flood that may have struck the region thousands of years ago.
