You are right, plagiethecreep, there is a crack on Manolo’s guitar that goes right through the heart. Actually, there are several cracks and other signs of wear and tear - you can see that the stars are fading for example - that weren’t there before:

Personally I don’t think there is a meaning to that particular crack, like you suggested there might be, but for the sake of fun let’s overthink it! So, before the I Will Wait For You transition, there was no crack: I’ve mentioned before that towards the end of this sequence that things get, shown with color and sound(at least that’s the impression that I get), bittersweet. They’re grown up and missing Maria, and Manolo isn’t very happy about his life. So I think those two things may be illustrated by the crack across the heart.

GOSH, I love this movie! It deserved an award!

131-di streamed The Book of Life the other night and it made me remember how much I enjoyed the film. The story’s pacing was slightly wonky to me, but the characters and their designs were just phenomenal!  

But when it comes to drawing them?

ARGH. Took me an hour and a half to just sketch Xibalba here, aka the ultimate trash lord. But I love him and La Muerte. ♥ I’d give ‘em a smooch.
