”Realistically, Katara should have fallen for Zuko and not Aang.”
Oh, yes. Let us talk about realism.
Realistically, Katara suffers from trauma. Trauma brought to her by the Fire Nation. Trauma from seeing the Fire Nation flag in her village as they raided, murdered and brutalized her people. Trauma from when they once again came back and with Zuko hurting her and her family.
Trauma from seeing the treatment earthbenders faced, trauma from the acts of war, ethnic cleansing and basically genocide. Katara might forgive but she doesn’t forget. She can’t seem to get herself to enjoy the idea of monarchy and imperialism that holds up monarchist values. Katara is someone who believes all power is truly issued by the people as seen she commits eco-terrorism for the sake of the people and the environment. She loathes the corporations that poisoned and hurt the people for their own capitalist gains. She stands up for the little person and do you think her values goes in line with a monarchy?
And if she did actually love Zuko for some wild and unexplained reason, would she feel safe to be surrounded by the gold and crimson? Waking up to the flag that reminds her of her trauma? Being clothed in the colors of the Fire Nation and forget her own culture? Or knowing that people don’t like her because of her heritage. Fire Nation just came out of 100 years of fascist rule and the anti watertribe sentiment isn’t washed away with Katara’s presence in the Fire Nation. It hurts her. It hurts Zuko’s rule. Katara is labeled as a traitor in her own tribe and labeled as a foreign threat in the Fire Nation by the same politicians that once upheld the FN supremacy. They didn’t go away. They didn’t unlearn what 100 years of fascist propaganda had taught them.
Zuko is still unlearning his ways but Katara is not his teacher and she is not his savior. Katara deserves better than that. For her own well being.
Realistically, after all that has happened and all the hardships she has faced. Katara won’t come to love Zuko as anything but maybe a friend.
I’m so glad someone pointed out how unlike Katara it is to live in extreme wealth as a monarch, as is depicted in so many ZK fanworks. She grew up in a society with no major wealth differentiations because they were all living in the aftermath of genocide and appear to be dirt poor. She is shown giving up what little food she has to a child, and doesn’t take any water for herself or get any rest when trying to keep the group together in the desert. She’s uncomfortable with her own father living in a castle in the comics. These are not the characteristics of someone who would ever be comfortable sitting on a throne and hoarding wealth.
Tangentially related, but while I didn’t totally like her portrayal in LoK and would’ve appreciated her to get more characterization/plot relevance as Zuko and Toph did, I think the people saying that she should’ve been a politician on the council rather than a healer are way off. Katara is much more likely to do hands on work when helping people, and have direct contact with people who others would avoid and consider lost causes. She is not the type who can watch from a distance, behind a pallenquin, or from the top of a throne. She likes to help people while being one of the people.
So I completely agree with this assessment of her character, and am glad someone brought up how uncomfortable she’d be as Fire Lady. Imo, even if for some reasons he chose to be with Zuko, they’d have to figure out some way to make it work without her being a monarch.
I personally headcanon her working as a healer in the lower rings of Ba Sing Se as a day job in the future, while probably also teaching combat water bending (she had to get teaching creds that qualified her to teach Korra from somewhere, and I doubt it would be just from teaching Aang for a few months at age 14). And honestly, everyone eventually had to have gotten a day job since they wouldn’t be fighting battles 24/7 their entire lives. Hers definitely involved directly healing and aiding the poor, not getting super rich and attending political meetings in fancy clothes.

I think a lot would happen if Katara would become Firelady and few good. Here’s why ZK and Katara becoming Firelady wouldn’t work or it’s just not realistic.
Katara, as it is in her character, does not conform to the idea of monarchy. I believe she shares the same point with Suyin in LoK that the idea of a monarch is outdated.
Politically Katara is a people’s person. She cannot stand living in luxurious wealth when she has seen in first hand poverty, atrocities and the impact monarchy has on the common people.
100 years of indoctrination means there’s generational resentment for people who look like Katara. She might be the most hated Firelady in the Fire Nation because 1.) She’s a stranger to their nation. 2.) She’s Water Tribe. 3.) Katara would have to deal with politicians and military officials who didn’t mind abusing her and her people. It’s not fair to Katara. 4.) It’s not Katara’s job to singlehandedly end generational racism and resentment. Katara has enough trauma to live it than being forced to live in a nation that was once ready to have her burned and killed but suddenly have to fake their love and loyalty to her because she’s married to the Firelord.
It puts Zuko in an awkward position. Zuko has reformers and hardliners to please. If not, his rule can be put in jeopardy. Fire Sages, army officals and ministers all have a say in the future of the nation (unfortunately but that is how politics works. Unless you want Zuko to turn out like Sozin or Ozai and purge them all out). Zuko cannot afford to put this country through distress or a coup d’etat because of Katara.
Imagine if Zuko would give up the throne for Katara. Yeah maybe it would work (most likely not because ZK has other problems as well) but Zuko loves his nation so much and someone has to rebuild it and that can only be Zuko.
Hardliners and Fire Sages throwing fits over the royal family heirs being Waterbenders lmao
There’s probably even more reasons why Katara as Fire lady doesn’t work. Also, Katara deserves much better.
