More shameless puppy pictures. He's an old man now!
Prayers are stronger than bombs.
I have discovered that most every argument, discontentment, and certainly all my suffering begins with me thinking myself, someone, or something has to be different. Notice your thoughts today and when they are attacking you or another - say - "Hold up! Not today!" Then, think of 5 things you're grateful for. It really works - if you work it.
Friday wisdom. Love, MAL
My definition of compassion: seeing someone in their pain or fear with no judgement and all the love in your heart, naming it as your own. Go out today and be compassion in action. Much love, Rev. MAL
I'm reading reports that the west is gearing up for war with Syria. Let's all pray for the miracle of peace. Remember - please - you matter, and so do your thoughts and prayers. Love, MAL
What kind of life are you imagining today? If you need support getting a bigger vision, tell me. I'd love to help. Love, Rev. MAL

Do you REALLY believe you are worthy of being loved? If you do - awesome. If not, then get to loving yourself with your every word, thought, and deed. And when you forget or fall down - love yourself back up and start again!
Much love,
Mark Anthony Lord
Some thoughts on gossip...
When you hear that someone is gossiping and causing more harm then good - it's hard. What's true is that gossip is a form of communication. A destructive one, but for many who do not have a higher way ... YET ... it is the best they/we can do. Gossip reveals that someone has unhealed hurt inside of them and they have not yet matured on how to handle it within themselves and how to go directly to the source for true relief and resolution. The even uglier truth is that gossip is a form of attack - war. Are you willing to stop the gossip and be a healer? I AM. Tell one person your truth today. Pray to say what you mean, to mean what you say, and that you don't say it mean. This is the way that humanity gets healed. Love, Mark Anthony Lord
Do you want a deeper connection to God? I’ll tell you how.
A reader wrote to me the following, “I have struggled tremendously with spirituality and my faith for the last 7 year's. I love God and I believe in a higher being but I've struggled to make that relationship connection, and it has left me feeling spiritually hungry for something more.”
Having a daily, living relationship with the God of your being can be challenging, especially for us western world people who value logic and the idea that “what I see I believe.” An additional challenge is that we were taught about what I call a Santa Claus God (see my previous blog, Where in your life do you still have a Santa Claus God?), meaning a magical man who is separate from us, sitting on a cloud somewhere keeping score on what we do or don’t do, and judging us harshly. Who the heck wants a relationship with that kind of God? Not me.
I’m sensing you have moved beyond the Santa Claus God, having enough intelligence and heart to know that’s not possible or productive. But what happens to many is they get stuck in the in-between, not yet awakened to a new idea about God, they sit in the void feeling empty and hungry (as you so clearly stated).
Developing a new relationship in any area of our lives takes work, but when you don’t even have a sense of what it is you’re relating to, along with having to remove many layers of preconceived ideas and cultural stigma it really takes some time, energy, and consistency.
When I was in India I saw a completely different world where talking to God, loving God, and making God a priority was an acceptable, honorable way of life. They related to God very personally, knowing that He/She/It lived within and all around them. They relied upon God and had no shame around being dependent. It was understood that you relied upon God. In fact, to depend upon yourself or other people first is ludicrous and sets you up for great disappointment and failure. The primary relationship, the only one worth working on really, is your relationship with God.
They helped me open my heart, and yet I admit that I still can feel embarrassed, outside of my work place, to speak about my love for God (odd, most people say they feel most embarrassed inside their workplace). I keep it close to my heart but far from my sleeve. I actually think that’s fine because again, our culture is not one where we speak freely and boldly about our faith. I say all this to acknowledge that you are not alone in your struggle to really know and trust God. Your desire to do so is admirable.
This may be a radical idea to you, but one of the major blocks to not being able to feel, know, and hear God (within your being) is your unhealed relationships with your Mother and Father. As little children we all project onto God the way we were and weren’t loved by our parents. The conditions that were placed upon how we were loved, we in turn have placed upon God. The parts of us that hold resentment, anger, guilt and fear towards our parents live within our relationship to God.
So what to do? We must forgive our parents. I mean deeply forgive.
It is also in India where I learned how important this really is. To the extent you can allow your parents to be forgiven, to that same extent you will automatically open to the love of a brand new God, who actually isn’t brand new, but is to you because you’ve not know Him/Her/It in this way. I’m not talking about, “Oh, I forgive them. I know they did the best they could do.” Yes, they did do the best they could. In fact, they did the perfect job for your spiritual awakening. Deep inside your soul you picked the perfect parents who would give you exactly what you need to spiritually grow.
From your adult self you may have made peace with what you did and did not receive, but I’m talking about really allowing the younger parts of yourself that were denied, hurt, ignored, shamed or blamed to have their voice and be heard. These are the parts within us that, if not brought to the light and healed, continue to block us from giving and receiving genuine love. They block us from spiritually awakening because they are the very portholes through which this awakening must occur. So to ignore them, or pretend they don’t matter, or to not even realize they are there – is where we remain stuck.
1. Begin by asking your personal Divine to help you in having a deep, cleansing, and transformational forgiveness experience. It doesn’t matter if you feel completely disconnected from your God – He/She/It will hear you. Just ask – clearly and intentionally, “God, I don’t know where you are or who you are, but I believe in you and I want a deeper, more loving relationship with you. Please activate forgiveness within my soul for my parents. On every level of my being, please help me forgive and become fully free to know, feel, trust, and depend upon you.” Don’t worry about how it works. Forgiveness is intelligent. It knows exactly where to go and how to do what it does.
2. Sit down and journal about your childhood. Write about the ways you felt unloved, not seen or heard, blamed or shamed. You’ll be amazing at how quickly the right images and memories will arise. They are actually right there on the surface. Don’t edit or stop. Just write absolutely anything and everything that comes to you. Allow the tears to flow, the anger to be felt. Know that you are surrounded by the love of God so you’re safe. Go as long and as deep as you can. If it starts to feel too intense then take a break, but as you do, consciously close the process by saying, “Thank you my God for beginning this journey. I feel complete for now. Please close up these openings within me so I can move through my day fully present. Please do not stop the forgiveness process. Keep it going.”
This kind of work is where the rubber meets the road and true transformation takes place. I don’t know how long it takes or how much of it you will have to do. For each one of us it’s different, but that doesn’t matter. For me, there’s nothing more important then doing my inner forgiveness work. It sets me free, allows me to hear my Divine, and lifts me up into a greater vibration of joy and receptivity. Life begins working, prosperity flows, and opportunities come a knockin’.
Finally, begin talking to the God of your being every day. Just say, “hello, how are you?” Talk to Him/Her/It like a best friend. Imagine there is a beautiful, unconditionally loving being within you or sitting across from you drinking coffee. Just share, and share, and share. The shift will come and the faith will grow – if you just begin and allow forgiveness to have its way.
SHAMELESS PLUG – to get more support in your forgiveness process buy my new book today – THOU SHALL NOT SUFFER. (preorder, support my ministry, and then wait until February, 2014 to get it! … Don’t worry, just purchasing it will activate forgiveness. J)
Much Love,
Rev. MAL
Where in your life do you still have a Santa Claus God?
The God I grew up with was more like Santa Claus. He knew when I was sleeping and when I was awake. He knew if I was good or bad, and rewarded or punished me accordingly. When I was in second grade the boy who sat in front of me (he shall remain nameless so as to keep him safe) told me Santa was not real. I was caught off guard but I remember acting very cool … “I know that,” I responded as casually as I could. Later that night I asked my older brother who confirmed that the fat man in the red suit was not real. I felt sad and confused because like all children I believed in magic and wanted it all to be true.
As I grew the fantasy of Santa disappeared but what remained was the cartoon image of God. I was NOT told that God – an old, white man, long beard, long robe, sitting in the sky with his “only begotten son” by his side and angels flying around playing their harps, was also not real! That insanity was kept alive.
The problem – the God I was told about was not real, therefore not available, therefore not able to answer prayers, therefore unable to save me from my suffering, therefore a complete waste of time. THROW HIM OUT! Which I did.
Next problem – no God. Maybe not a problem for some, but for me, who was drowning in my own misery and self-destruction, I needed a spiritual solution. Pain pushed me into 12-step meetings, therapy, Unity of Chicago (an amazing new thought church) as well as countless workshops, lectures .. and on and on. I became a spiritual junkie reading every book that was recommended. People probably thought I was one of those “new age wackos” but I didn’t care. What mattered was that it was working! The God of my childhood began disappearing like Santa.
I had to do a lot of work to release the God-images that the world told me about when I was young, but slowly I began waking up to something that felt alive, personal, real, beautiful, SUPER FUN, sexy, fantastic, inclusive, and for absolutely everyone! The greatest part, which I absolutely know today more than anything, is that this power and presence is in me and loves me unconditionally. No doubt, I am challenged with allowing myself to be loved unconditionally (worthiness crap I’m still moving through), but with each prayer, each meditation, each breath I surrender that old stuff it gets easier and easier.
This is an enormous subject, I know, but one that is forever near and dear to my heart. I don’t totally know how or why it’s so … but it is. My job today is to help people heal their relationship with God so they too can become free of the old, archaic, fear-based monster and awaken to the love within themselves. That kind of job sounds weird to most people. I get it. But to me – it’s the coolest thing in the world.
How is your God? Did you surrender Santa but forget to also let go of the fairytale God of your childhood? Take a moment and check. Are there remnants of the punishing God you were told about as a child still floating around inside of you? Could you use a deep cleansing of your mind and heart when it comes to God?
If so, I’d love to help you. Reach out to me.
Much Love,
Rev. MAL
A good reminder for us all.
Much love,
MAL
This weekend, I was blessed with a beautiful trip to Venice and Malibu with people I love, then I spent Sunday morning at Agape International Spiritual Center in LA. so great to hear MY minister speak the truth. So much passion and love.
What makes your weekends special?
PERFECTIONISM – are you sick with it?
Today I looked down at my larger-than-used-to-be belly, which I think appeared over night, but I’m certain it’s been there for much longer, and I was hit with a dose of self-loathing. The perfectionist voice chimed in – “It’s not ok! I’ve got to be 20lbs thinner and look like Ben Afleck.” Nice! I know.
Perfectionism is one of our major, societal sicknesses. Perfect grades – perfect manicured lawns – perfect partners - perfect children – perfect bodies – perfect responses and behaviors – perfect blah, blah, blah! The people on the magazine covers are so photo shopped they look more like actual barbie dolls then people. The game of being real is out-shadowed by the game of being perfectly fake.
One of the craziest, most powerful ways that the ego, or fearful mind keeps us from loving ourselves and truly knowing each other is through the most impossible, unrealistic, insane voice that says we have to be perfect. Deep inside we all know that we’re not. The only thing I’m perfect at being is imperfect.
What keeps the insanity going is the delusion that I might be able to make you think I’ve got my shit together. This is called saving my face while covering my ass. I pretend I’m whatever I think you want me to be in the given moment, while covering up any part of me that doesn’t match that idea. I’m not alone here, right? Geez – no wonder we’re walking around lonely and disconnected. We seldom allow our gut to hang out, our hair to be a mess, our wrinkles to show, or to look foolish.
“The myth of living a perfect life is a waste of time the only thing you have to do is be willing to be corrected on your course.” – Disappearance of the Universe
God, Unconditional Love, Life itself is not remotely interested in your need to be perfect, because it knows you can’t be. And furthermore, it doesn’t want you to even try. As the quote says – it just asks that you be willing to be corrected on your course. No shame, blame, or recrimination – just be willing.
Are you willing to give up perfectionism? Am I willing to give it up? My mind says, “hell, yeah!” But the part of me that still believes people’s opinions of me are important says, “ummmm … let’s think about this for a minute.”
Well – the minutes is up and so is the game of trying to be perfect.
I know, I know! “How do we quit this drug?” It’s not easy. Perfectionism is pervasive in you, in me, and in the world. But it’s not unstoppable, and it’s not ultimately real. It’s a ghost that has power only because we have given it. So, let’s take this power back by remembering the one true source – God, the good, the omnipotent.
Here’s how it goes –
1. If it ain’t of God then it’s not real.
2. If it’s not real then it ain’t me.
3. If it ain’t me then it has to leave.
When perfectionism keeps you from loving yourself or speaking your truth – notice, call it out, and say, “Perfectionism, you have no home here. God, give me the courage to say what I am to say, do what I am to do, and the willingness to love myself fully, exactly as I am.”
Let’s give up needing or wanting to be perfect! It’s a waste of time and energy – and we don’t have time to waste. We’re here to be our most fabulous, flawed selves.
Love to you,
MAL
Love this! LISTEN TO YOUR HEART.
Some thoughts on Egypt...
Egypt seems like a place for most of us that is so far away and has nothing to do with us. The truth is - all unrest in the world is MY unrest and an opportunity for me to pray for peace within and "outside" of me. This isn't about who's right or wrong - it's about a transcendent consciousness. Join me in establishing that today for ourselves and all our brothers and sisters.
Much love,
MAL
