My favorite sequence in ep 4 was this, his opening up to her about the loneliness and hardship he feels. It works for me both because he is such an intensely private person but he feels he can unburden his innermost self to her, but also because you would think this can come across as spoiled and self-pitying “oh woe is me, I am a famous concert pianist” but it does not - it comes across as his truth and his most genuine self; there is no self-pity only revealing his soul. And the fact that it feels safe for him to be like that with her - to show his vulnerable and honest inner soul instead of the persona (we see his persona during his talk and it’s charming and self-deprecating but not truly him; I mean some of it is him but with the non-fitting-into-the-narrative parts sanded away) - I am living for this.

And the quiet melancholy. He is not discontent with his life because he is too accepting, too used to it to even think of rebelling. But that loneliness and - once again, I don’t want to say depression because it’s not that in a clinical sense at least - so maybe melancholy is a good word - are grinding him down to nothing. I need both of them to find joy in this world.

The thing that struck me so much about this scene is that she responds to his quietness with her own (or maybe his quietness responds to hers.) She just sits there listening, occasionally asking simple questions but he opens up to that - because he recognizes that he is safe to do so but, more than that, that she is genuinely interested not in a famous pianist or whatever but in him as a person because they have this current of mutual empathy running between them.

The reason this scene is my favorite in the episode is simple. He bares his soul to her. And that is way sexier than baring his body could ever be.
