"I don’t feel wholly comfortable answering this. It’s not that—I don’t—I wouldn’t say I like anyone right now. Liking is a big thing. I am not James, and I do not proclaim my romantic desires to the world brazenly and bravely; he put himself on the line daily for half a year. It was brutal. I couldn’t do it. I will say that I have potential to like someone, maybe. Let’s just say I know a bloke who’s easy to be with—not James, Merlin—and upon occasion may have an effect on my stomach. Maybe. No promises. "I once dated Leighton Hartley—Gryffindor in my brother Matty’s year—for five months, which was way longer than anyone expected. I had sex with him—that’s just an observation, not why it ended. It ended because, well, he was getting ready to graduate, and I realised I didn’t particularly care about that fact. I liked him, sure, but I like my friends too, and there were significantly less expectations with that, so that’s how we broke it off.”

"Depends how you define hooked up, I suppose? I’m not sure how many I’ve snogged—more than my brothers would want to know about—but only a handful of guys have I moved beyond snogging with, and I’ve only had sex with three. They were all—well, they were probably mostly mistakes, but I don’t regret it. I try not to regret things.”

"Bickering, banter, teasing and being teased in return, challenges—especially because I never back down, so when neither of us give an inch, I’m not sure, it just gets the blood pumping?—and passion, like, being really involved and into it? "I think I rather need my right hand, what with all the people I dearly enjoy punching—or simply beating, in Mulciber's case—and I'm afraid your entertainment doesn't trump the feeling of winning, sorry. Right? Potions just, ugh, make my life. Honest. I could listen to Rem and Lils lecture me about them for days. The love in my heart for Potions is real. And please, my absence on the pitch is probably the only thing that would be felt. Eeven your captain says we have some good players—we're just shit at working together. So I'm pretty sure the only thing that even matters in matches with Ravenclaw is our team members."

"Yes, I thought as much." She gave a sly smile, nodding in agreement with what the other girl said. "I have to agree with you – there’s only so many portraits that a girl can talk to before going insane, right?" She thought back to the last time she was left in the house with only her parents and the paintings of past Black family members to keep her company; she must’ve sent at least a hundred owls per day to… well, any one she could think of, really. At the names that the blonde mentioned, Cissa straightened her posture slightly. "Ah, I presume you know my cousin well, then? I wouldn’t pay attention to anything he says, really; he’s more than likely saying it to simply bother you."

A small frown marred the young woman’s features, purely because of that little snort that Marlene had released. Laughter, she was fine with, giggles were tolerable, but snorts – it was safe to say that snorting was unspeakable at Grimmauld Place, and Narcissa learned from a young age that it wasn’t considered socially acceptable. It may have been a petty thing to tell a six year old, but that was the sort of people that her parents were. “Mhm, I suppose that could definitely be applied to the vast majority of Ravenclaws.” She agreed with a smirk, although it was a bit of a shock to hear that it was a house of disloyalty; Slytherin might not have been known for handing out warm hugs and cookies with milk, but if there was one thing they prided themselves on having, it was loyalty. “Oh dear. So all is not fine in the Eagle’s nest.” She murmured, not really caring whether Marlene heard her or not. Perhaps the other three houses weren’t quite as perfect as they claimed to be.

Marlene couldn't even imagine the horrors of being stuck alone with portraits for most of her days, and nodded fervently. You couldn't play Quidditch with a portrait, and they were very bad at enjoying sugar quills with her, and short of bickering with them and scandalising them with outrageous pickup lines, there wasn't much joy to be found with them for Marlene. At Narcissa's comments about Regulus, it struck Marlene how strange it was that the comments were probably equally applicable to Sirius. Still, as impulsive and reckless as she may be, some part of Marlene knew not to mention Sirius right now. It wasn't that she was worried about herself, or any outward reaction from the other blonde; no, it was Sirius she was worried for. She didn't really know what exactly mentioning him would do—especially as she had already mentioned Remus, and had been established as a Ravenclaw who was friends with Regulus, and she imagined Narcissa knew that the McKinnons were purebloods—but something in her screamed no, and for once, she listened. It probably helped that Narcissa's very existence didn't infuriate Marlene in the way Bellatrix's did; otherwise, Merlin only knew how hard it would be to control her big mouth. It had already gotten her in enough trouble with one Black; she didn't need to add a second just yet, especially not one associated with Lucius Malfoy.

Marlene barely noticed the actual frown, but she was very good at reading disapproval. She'd been subjected to it for seven years now; she'd have to be a fucking idiot not to be. Anyway, she could feel disapproval radiating off Narcissa, and she assumed something she'd done had been uncouth—in all honesty, it probably was, but Marlene grew up as the only girl and the youngest of five, so it wasn't really in her to care. Still, it did stoke the slightly more rebellious side in her—a side she had been doing so well at keeping quiet during the time Sirius could have come up, dammit. Sure, she'd spoken most of the conversation without a filter, but also with no particular desire to cause mischief, and part of her was stirring with that desire, which she was quite blatantly not okay with. However, some of this was assuaged by Narcissa's words against Ravencla, thankfully, and the rest—hopefully—was channeled into displaying her own personal disdain for her house. Marlene didn't actually have a favourite house, bt if she had to choose, she'd probably choose Hufflepuff; she was nothing like a Hufflepuff, but that was okay, because she had never really considered herself a great person. She was too similar to the Gryffindor archetype to consider them the best, and Slytherin always felt like the other side to the same coin as Gryffindor, so they were sort of out. Plus, Mulciber was in there. Eurgh. And the worst was Ravenclaw, obviously. "I honestly doubt all is fine in any house," Marlene remarked candidly. "I mean, they are filled with people from ages eleven to eighteen, based on what a hat said they were like when they were eleven. It's not necessarily a recipe for success," she said in the same caustic tone that had been present when she had spoken against Ravenclaw earlier.

Regulus couldn’t help but chuckle as giggles erupted from Marlene’s mouth. His eyes widened as she finally confessed her not-so-good-looking odds. She was obviously trying to make sure he didn’t hear her, the words were spoken faster than a sober person can speak and a wide smile followed, as if that would make him forget what he’d just heard. ”Marlene, what the hell, those are close to the shittiest odds you can have! Um, no, because if you fail, then your success rate drops even more.” Technically, if Marlene succeeded, she was correct in saying that her success rate would ‘boost’, however, technically, if Marlene failed, then Regulus was correct in saying her success rate would drop. Shit. Regulus watched as Marlene reacted quickly to him and turned just a little too fast for what her drunken balance could sustain. She tripped, but luckily fell right into where Regulus had reached for her. Helping her up, Regulus raised his eyebrows at her, still holding on to her arm. “I’m tempted to say I told you so.” He watched as the stairs moved away from where she could jump to, and let out a small sigh of relief, as much as Marlene looked disappointed. “Okay, Miss McKinnon, I’m bringing you to my common room while you sober up, because right now, neither of us are going to be able to get into the Ravenclaw Tower. You’re too drunk to answer a riddle, and I’m too…not smart.”

Between Regulus saying her odds were essentially trash—the worst part, she thought both privately and grumpily, was that part of her knew he was right, which was nothing short of maddening—and threatening to say the dreaded four words—Marlene's childhood had been a stream of I told you so, which only got worse as she ascended to Ravenclaw Tower—Marlene wasn't quite sure she should like him anymore. Most of her, however, managed to quash the—whilst large, admittedly drunk—part of her and told her to shut the fuck up and listen. Honestly. My sub-conscious is so rude.

At his words, though, Marlene frowned. "You aren't too not smart," she argued, before getting confused. "Convoluted," she muttered at him, referring to his phrasing, though a sober Marlene wouldn't have expected anyone to understand what she was referring to. Sober Marlene was not a great believer in context. Drunk Marlene was even less. "I can do it," she insisted, despite the last time she had said this—some two minutes ago, if that—being proven false, though admittedly not because she didn't want to try. However, Marlene, being Marlene, also had no particular desire to attend her own common room, as it was full of Ravenclaws who, for the large part, were entirely aggravating and undeserving of her presence. Yes, you're such an appealing offer, McKinnon, a sharp voice in her head said sarcastically.

Marlene sighed and noddeed her assent. "You win," she mumbled, before wrinkling her nose. "I like it better when I win, I think," she said to Regulus, completely unapologetically. "I like it when you win too. Just not—I don't like losing," she tried to explain. Marlene shot an exceedingly dirty look at the staircase. "I lost to the stairs," she moaned, suddenly realising the sheer horror of the entire situation. "The stairs, Regulus!" She threw up her hands in despair. Still, she allowed him to lead her on, mumbling curses every so often about stairs.

"On the contrary it would be very interesting if you had one hand. I’d pay any amount to watch that. Oh there’s plenty to do out on the pitch without you around, McKinnon."

"I imagine I'd still succeed at life, though the degree of success probably depends on which hand. Still, if I had my right hand, I could still drink, use a wand, fly, play Quidditch—perhaps less successfully than currently—though perhaps I couldn't continue with Potions. How ever would I go on? What a tragedy, the deprivation of the worst subject known to man. And yes, I suppose you must survive somehow during the matches you don't play against Ravenclaw—I mean, I guess it'd be better for you if I didn't play, but I'd never taken you for someone who likes an easy win."

Daisy grinned. She’d always been confused about how she felt about Rita, but when it came to her gossiping, Daisy appreciated that she had Marlene-a-million-light-years-tougher-McKinnon to protect her from it. She shook her head at Marlene’s next words, however her grin stayed plastered on her lips. “I’ll admit that they were attractive, and I will admit that I was slightly attracted, but I would hardly describe myself as fierce, or minx, and especially not the two of them together,” Daisy laughed. This was all truth, really. These boys were the first that Daisy had felt any attraction to since Fabian, so she could hardly be a minx, but it was fun to joke with Marlene. “Mhmm, it was highly pleasurable.”

"Ding, ding, ding!" Marlene crowed, grinning at her friend's words. "The first step is always acceptance," Marlene said solemnly. "In this case, the acceptance of attraction," she clarified, before tilting her head to the side. "I think you're fierce," she offered. "Maybe not vicious, or in a, like, outward way, but I think you have a fierce heart—seems to me you've got a lot of love in there, Daisy Day, plus you put up with me, so I reckon that takes a fierce kind of heart!" Marlene informed her with a cheeky grin. "As for the minx part, well, one step at a time, eh?" she continued, nudging Daisy in camaraderie, before mock gasping at Daisy's final words. "Highly pleasurable; Daisy Day!" she said in a delightedly scandalised tone. "That sounds like it came right out of a romance novel, not a description for the lovely muggle boys you met this summer," Marlene said with a wink, letting Daisy know she was completely joking. She really was delighted, though. Marlene was a firm believer in the importance of acknowledging attraction to others because it meant you could identify it and that greatly cut out a good dal of confusion and frustration from one's life.
