Marlon Krieger

Marlon Krieger has been working as a photographer for over ten years. Starting in fashion and commercial work, he quickly began to concentrate on storytelling and humanitarian photography. He has photographed in Haiti during the 2004 Civil War under U.N. auspice, chronicled life in Cuba from 2004-2010, documented domestic servitude in Peru and photographed the underground music scene in New York. For the last two years, Krieger has been working on projects centered on education and women’s issues, including domestic abuse and modern day slavery. Working in video and still photography, he has created multimedia presentations and short films, has organized various group exhibitions and fundraisers, and has been internationally exhibited and published.

Mountains I was amazed at how quickly our surroundings could turn from cold, treacherous and hostile to warm, beautiful and disarming. It was especially interesting to see our moods and courage alter with the changing environment. Inevitably when the clouds moved over us, and a cold wet wind howled down the mountains we felt defeated, hungry and lonely. With the warming touch of the sun came our hope and optimism at 11,000 feet, hanging off the side of a mountain. Part of the beauty in climbing is the ability to control the whimsical nature of our emotions. You learn to manage and compartmentalize them. Island in the Stream | Cuba It was just a moment. Before I knew it, it was over. In my travels to the Island from 2005-2012 I found a nation filled with pride and beauty. I always tried to capture what I saw, not where I thought the island was going or the forces of change that where evident, even back then. I tried to focus on what Cuba was exactly in that moment, a behavioral study of the Island and it's people. Nothing more. Island in the Stream | Cuba During my 2007 trip to Cuba I started to become aware of a growing counter-culture that was present below the surface. I began to notice different styles and forms of expression. I met painters and writers who weren’t whispering the same rhetoric I’d been hearing the whole time. Instead of going to listen to the same set of Buena Vista Social Club tunes played by every house band at every restaurant I went to heavy metal and electronic music concerts. Parties at churches, schools and even caves. I heard disillusionment and anger. I saw young people expressing themselves in different ways. I many ways my journeys to Cuba was my birth as a photographer. I had been taking pictures for a few years already, toying with different styles, subjects and approaches. There was so may things I loved to photographe and so many techniques I was curious about learning. I was always very aware of the camera, approaching everything in a very intellectual way. Trying to control every aspect in order to create the perfect moment. Inevitably it created very mediocre results. It was in Cuba that for the first time I stopped thinking and began shooting with instinct. A moment, and the snap of a shutter. It was almost like I would take a picture even before I realized that there was something worth photographing. To this day this series has some of my favorite images. I’m not sure what magic the island and it’s people hold for me, but I was addicted to it. I would go back many times between 2005-2012 to create “Island In the Stream” my photo-essay on Cuba. Walking in Havana I pass a boy growing a ball against the wall. I took two snaps, barely breaking my stride. Island in the Stream | Cuba President Obama is the first sitting U.S. President to visit Cuba in 88 years. With the historic political changes currently occurring between the Obama administration and the Castro regime, Cuba is poised for change. Over time we will see cultural, socio-economic and structural changes to an island that has been frozen in time for decades. I spend time traveling to Cuba from 2004-2012 in discord with the United States embargo, documenting an island in the stream of politics, ideologies and imaginations. This is my fleeting attempt to capture one last time the Cuba that had lived in our imaginations while capturing the people, the lifestyle and the essence of the street. This has left me with two conflicting views; Although Cuba is a country of immense beauty and passion, cultured and proud, it resonates with under tones of a gentle sadness that cannot be overlooked.
