Howdy! I'm Marty and this is my pinned post. I'm a Special Effects Props/Makeup Artist by trade, jack of all trades by hobby, and freak of the week by choice. I run Amphibious Effects, an ultra-small-scale FX studio that churns out all sorts of freaky things.

807- An Artificer from the Abyssal Unknown

807 arrived crashed on the planet after being pulled from between the stars by a powerful eldritch force. Hailing from a land of plasma, science, and circuitry, 807 is feeling a bit out of their depth in a world of swords and sorcery. Thankfully, the wreckage of their crash had just enough salvageable scrap for them to start rebuilding some rather frightening gadgets to hold the locals at bay. 807 spends their time alone with their mechanical marvels, searching for any way possible to return to their home world.

807 is part of my Mimic's Maw blind bag series! These adventurers come with a dice set, character art, a written backstory, and a ton of trinkets to incorporate into your next DND game. This batch of adventurers will be available for purchase soon!

Sculpt of the Door Guardian is finally complete! Now to mold it up! So excited to cold cast some of these- it’s gonna be my first time trying it out!

These funky fellows are going to end up as wall hanging art pieces AND peephole covers for front doors! Who knows if they keep dragons away or invite them in, certainly not I

On the subject of older prosthetic work, here's my first ever prosthetic makeup that I sculpted, molded, applied, and modeled! I believe this was done in 2015, but I could be wrong. Crazy that he's 10 years old now!

As per usual, more fun stuff under the cut! (including some progress pics)

I forget exactly what the concept was for this guy, but I think it was some sort of Alien War Prince that went mad and turned into a freaky cave dweller monster. not sure. I was 15.

Nareth's loadout consists of one full face foam latex prosthetic, dental distortions dentures, claws I made by sculpting with foam clay on top of press on acrylic nails, and my first ever EVA armor suit. I believe he had some sewn costume components as well, including the headdress, cape, and undersuit. If I could go back and fix him, I don't think there would be a single thing I'd leave unchanged- but hey, ten years of experience will do that to you.

Here's a 'Stan Winston' shot of the application- believe it or not I was shaking in my boots trying to get this thing on my face! I had neverr done it before!

And here is a (really over edited, thanks baby me) photo of the prosthetic sculpture before any detailing was added. It was done on a default headcast, so it was a biiiiit small for my face. oopsie

I also have a lot of photos of Nareth interacting with other performers from the day I applied him! Unfortunately I have lost contact with pretty much all of them and don't know their socials, so I don't feel comfortable posting the photos.

TW: REALISTIC SPECIAL EFFECTS MAKEUP GORE

These aren't real- don't worry! Some of the last demo applications done during my stay at a SPFX studio (as mentioned briefly in my previous post). I believe these were done some time between 2019 - early 2020 ?

The prosthetics were sculpted by the studio owner, but cleaned up, molded, cast, painted, and self-applied by myself. I remember sitting in front of a little folding mirror trying to glue these them to my face without my glasses on. All things considered, I think they look pretty sick.

"Little Death/Funeral For the Self", January 2020, Mixed Media Sculpture

Explanation of Process, Themes, and extra fun stuff below.

This was one of the last sculpture pieces I made in college. Though I wasn't aware of it at the time, I think I may have subconsciously made this piece to acknowledge the death of my old self and welcome a new era of self discovery and healing.

The body of the piece is cast in foam from a lifecast I made of myself when I was at my lowest point- severely underweight, overworked, and consumed by self hate. The glasses were ones I had worn as a kid, and the hat and shirt were ones that I had worn almost every day up until the day I dressed the sculpture. The hair on the piece is made up of trimmings I had saved from myself when I got the last bit of dyed hair cut out months prior. The wounds on the face mimic one of the last makeup applications I had done on myself during my stay with an abusive employer. The casket around the sculpture is made of old wood from the fence outside my parent's house. All of these aspects of my identity were things that kept me trapped, and the references to places and people I worked for were things that I needed to leave behind.

At the time I presented this piece, I couldn't find a meaning for it. I explained to the class that I just wanted "to make something cool". Looking back on it now, I see that there was much more going on. 2020 was the year I truly pivoted and started trying to seek help.

Now for the real bummer- this piece was displayed once for class, and then sat in the makerspace of my college for a while before we all got sent home for the quarantine. I was unable to retrieve it before we all left. I went back to find it, but it was gone.

I have no idea where this little me went, but its weirdly comforting to think that this old version of myself is out there living a life of its own, separate from me.

I hope he's happier now.

Trunk of the Lincoln log 9.15

Figured I should probably start posting about this project somewhere, especially since I will be getting to the art stage of it within the next month or so (which is honestly the part I'm most scared of). Feel free to read some thoughts below, this is mostly a post for me to jumpstart my thoughts today.

I've been chugging on a renpy project for about a month now- though I believe my total logged time is just under 20 hours as of now. It's a horror visual novel with some point and click exploration elements. Nearly the entire story takes place inside a parked car.

I've made a lot of great progress on the written script and the outline has been finished for a hot minute. My goal for this week is to get the script through the draft stage and into the editing stage, but this might be prolonged as I have barely gotten through the first five minutes of gameplay and I've already hit 9 pages of written text. My goal gameplay time is around 30 minutes for a quick first playthrough run, but as is often the case with VNs, there will be a ton of branching paths and cool things to find with a replay.

I'd also like to start putting some consideration towards the marketing of this project, as I would love nothing more than for people to be able to find this game and enjoy it with me! At this point I have no plans to monetize it outside of maybe a 'pay what you want' option. This is my first first expedition into the realm of gamedev, so I feel weird trying to turn it into like. a money making thing

Fingers! Wow

Cast from my real actual fingers, these guys have become all sorts of different things. I don't currently have any good pictures of them as earrings/pendants, but the magnet version is soooo funny. I think turning them into command hooks is the only logical next step.
