I mentioned this a bit before but there are many things Iâve learned being immersed in a conservative household and conservative media since birth. Conservative media has a very, very clever means of not only attacking Dem candidates, but specifically destabilizing liberals and manipulating them away from leftism, and has used this tactic for decades to transform progressives and democratic socialists into cohorts of the white moderacy/conservatism.
One specific example from this season is Foxâs method of borrowing historical leftist critique of HRC. They will use the story of Hillary laughing after overturning a rape case a couple of decades ago - I donât want to find the name now, but this is a speedy Google job - which leftists have been investigating and discussing for at least ten years now, and they will use it to critique Hillary. But, and this is important, they will use it in such a way that when liberals encounter similar critiques from leftists this election season, they will call it fabricated and merely a conservative invention (and probably misogynist, too). This alienates those on (or close to either side of) the line between liberalism and democratic socialism and fosters liberal mistrust of leftists. This is only partially evidenced by a ~10k note post on this hellsite that calls this story literally a âlie invented by conservatives 1-2 years agoâ while, again, it has been discussed in leftist circles for at least ten years. The first time I encountered such discussion was actually on Tumblr in 2010. The people on this new post - liberals and dem socs alike - denote the story as reactionary leftism.
This tactic is, as I mentioned, not new in any way and is sourced primarily in McCarthyism - and the media has always been a tool of McCarthyism (hence blacklists of celebrities, journalists, famous novelists during the Cold War, and state-sponsored journalism at the time). Fox et al. not only benefit from pretty basic and not all too original critique of democrats, but serve larger state/corporate interests in constantly dividing and controlling liberal ideology - absorbing young people into the white moderacy or else conservatism and villainizing, year after year, common/historical leftist rhetoric. Leftists become âdivisive,â âreactionaryâ (and I donât mean reactionaries as leftists use the term in referring to, ahem, scum), âmanipulative.â Conservatives donât see moderate liberals as threats, just as they donât see easily bought out moderate leftists who can be convinced of last-minute Leftist Evilâą before election season as threats. This system also serves to alienate specific minorities whose votes might be on the line - eg immigrants, and this is my example because this is my experience - from what they will thus perceive as the nonsensical American âfar left.â This is all classic McCarthyist media control.
Whatâs especially tactical of this phenomenon is that in the 3 years before election year, Fox et al. will do what seems to be the opposite. They will use specific terms from leftism and liberal activism in subtle ways, hire women and journalists of color to say them, and reap the benefits of seeming more progressive, nuanced, and moderate to young and minority consumers of media. Women hosts will use terms like ârape cultureâ - a frequent term on Fox in early 2015, used earnestly - and âworkplace harassmentâ and âslut-shamingâ and will argue a few weeks later with male hosts before a well-timed cut to commerical. But this year, they returned to taunting teenagers for being âtriggeredâ by âmicroaggressionsâ and went back to harassing people on college campuses.
This is not a coincidence. This is a well-timed plan: earn trust well before the election using whatever rhetoric is common among the young âleft,â then use leftist critique to divide âthe leftâ during election season. Fox and its associates - and Iâm talking about the five companies that run television and most of print and online news, whether liberal or conservative - are moneymakers for politicians, and vice versa. They gain power and a hell of a lot of money the more they can destabilize anticapitalism - you might say dividing consumers i.e. workers - just as any other corporation, and this is sponsored by the government. Our media is used to manipulate us: there are very real political reasons why Certain Websites consider protecting fascists but not activists as defending âfree speechâ and itâs not a casual misunderstanding of power dynamics in society - it is a calculated effort.
Be critical of any and all media, always.
