march eridan - eridan is masculine as fuck, and in fact pretty much The Entire Point Of His Character is a commentary on the mentally ill, terminally lonely male teenager -> far right radicalization pipeline. the princes in the story *in general* are an examination of a very masculine type of martyr-ish, fatalistic, doom-spiralling anxiety (or, in hussie's words, "teen boy diva bullshit"), and specifically how this anxiety both self-perpetuates, and is incredibly difficult to remove, because society/the patriarchy actually push these toxically masculine traits as "desirable" or "cool" - eridan's aggression and flaunting of wealth and status, dirk's stoicism, aloofness, and lone wolf tendencies, and even kurloz's extreme, public displays of self-punishment and atonement. masculinity, and eridan's identification with it, and even an examination of that masculinity being useful if properly channeled (eridan's hope powers are implied to be capable of bypassing LE/god tier immortality if he can harness them properly, and dirk's soul attack has been shown to be useful on multiple occasions) are like... literally what eridan IS. if you take that away from him then, legiterally, just make a fantroll. it's ok to just make a fantroll.

moreover, while much of his wardrobe is clearly just emulating his ancestor, the fashion choices he makes outside of that are hypermasculine - his gaudy sneakers are a staple of Rich Male Douchebag fashion, as is his crazy bling and his douchey shades. like, the guy PREFERS to present as masculine. hes literally a sneakerhead. look at these absolute douchebags.

literally none of their friends treat him like a full person (roxy gets the closest but he is clearly lower priority to her than her flesh and blood buddies; jake yells at him for being a tin can, jane calls him "that thing" when talking about him to dirk, and dirk LITERALLY NEVER STOPS REFERRING TO HIM AS "THE AUTO RESPONDER"). he doesn't want a body, he wants to be a real, tangible, autonomous being independent of dirk with full personhood (or at least MORE personhood).

no, that's not the point, i'm trying to say that I don't care about the right co-opting good art because good art is good to more people than just us. the glib line about hot sweaty men isn't an invitation for others to offer a solution, i'm discounting the idea of there being some magic way to get right wingers to stop resonating with good art in the first place, it's impossible and also kind of implies that people with different political beliefs are aliens who can't understand emotions or aesthetics.

i don't want art that shallowly signifies its political allegiance to me by having badass women in it, art that postures with representation as a shield against potentially harboring right leaning ideas, which is literally what is being posited to me right now. representation that does not shoulder responsibility for depicting alternate perspectives, but just washes your hands of any responsibility whatsoever because you've already signaled to the demographic you want to take money from as a crass imitation of praxis.

I mean, there certainly is a reaction on the right to good art with badass women in it, let alone bad art with "badass" women in it. Your point is entirely valid, though we can't understate the fact that 15 to 30 percent of the origin of the reactionary wave in the west was because supposedly grown men were angry at any kind of film or game with women or people of color in it, regardless of quality.

I think a better point of argument is looking at good art that the right has objectively refused to adopt or actively counter-signals against, like Disco Elysium for example. Fight Club got co-opted because it's dual message of criticism the rise of fascism while being a metaphor for being a gay male could easily be ignored or "mistaken" for an endorsement of fascism, the problem for the right arises when the messaging is less "subtle" and more "blunt". Disco Elysium is a game with many subtle themes and concepts, but why hasn't the far-right co-opted Measurehead or shared out of context dialogue from the Fascist route? Almost as if when something is written in a way that the Right cannot jive with, they refuse to engage with it beyond seething.

So the point is that for less "politically correct" (using it in it's Actual Original Meaning) works of art, its more challenging to scare away the right as your quality increase because your usually not making Disco Elysium 90% of the time. Not every game is going to be made by marxist feminists with background in counter-cultural art and literary circles, but a lot of art post-2015 is being treated by a increasingly more and more deranged section of the population as such. There is obviously a difference between people who didn't get Fight Club versus people who purposefully "re-imagined" Fight Club, but the people dominating the argument in the Culture Wars™ are the latter, not the former. While there obviously isn't a magic universal liberal way to scare chuds from enjoying and co-opting a piece of art, there certainly are ways that intentionally scare them away, but those are often already embedded into the art. At the same time, even without art doing Generic Sanitized Pop Representation, chuds/outrage tourists/cultural hitlerites will be like this and will react as so. Thus the obvious answer is make more "Scary" Art while laughing at people who are shadow boxing Big Blue Hair And Pronouns, because you really aren't going to change their minds 50% of the time. That or just do what those people in Trench Crusade did and immediately tell them to fuck off and die, so their grift fails and forces them to move on
