It's late autumn of 1816, and Helena is reporting for work in the kitchen of Henley Manor. In any other year, she would be celebrating the harvest with her family. But this year, known as the Year Without a Summer, there's not much to celebrate. The crops have failed on a massive scale. Many of the servants have either left the manor in search of a better life, or have become ill due to starvation. Some have even died. Helena herself is knowing hunger for the first time in her life. She brings in cauldrons of water and vigorously sweeps the floors to keep her mind off of her troubles and her empty stomach. Maybe next year, summer will bring sunshine and warmth again, and she'll be eating cake with apple butter.

I made Helena's work dress and apron. Her mob cap is borrowed from my Felicity doll's collection. Helena is a 16-inch A Girl for All Time doll.
