Something that annoys me about “Y2K” resellers is when they misrepresent the item to make it more trendy. And I know this is a petty thing to complain about, and I may be bias because I’m looking at it from the perspective of someone who passionate about collecting.

But no that Barbie bag is not a “Y2K Makeup Case”

It is very obviously meant to carry Barbie dolls and their accessories. The loops/pouches wouldn’t even fit most makeup items.

So I haven’t ever talked about my full thoughts on the movie, but if you’ve seen my Midge posts you know I have strong feelings about how she was handled. And that’s kind of my root problem with the Barbie movie, that it opted for social commentary at the cost of the characters.

Personally, I think I went in expecting them to utilize the decades worth of characters, dynamics, and stories that Barbie already had. Instead of everyone just being “Barbie” with the only distinction being their career or role. Where’s Kira? Or Christie? Or Teresa? Or literally any of Barbie’s friends or siblings?

To my memory, Midge is the only one who made the cut and she’s treated horrendously. There’s also the fact that Alan is present, but in his 1960’s form, which brings a lot of questions alongside HF Midge. Is he supposed to be married/the father of their baby? Is there another Alan that’s just never shown? Was he the one that got out? It’s a strange setup.

And when it comes to Barbie’s siblings, the closest we come to any appearing is Growing Up Skipper. Another victim of the weird jokes and played by an adult woman. And with this movies need to joke about how weird these dolls are, I’m glad it was an adult instead of an actual preteen. There’s also the mention of babysitter Skipper as a previous escapee.

If it’s not obvious, I really don’t like the “she’s so weird” gag throughout the movie. Especially because it’s never resolved. Mattel treating them like they’re weird and gross? Makes sense. Because that’s exactly what happened. But the entirety of Barbieland treats them this same way. And it doesn’t even improve by the end. Midge is still contained to her little front yard.

I know this isn’t a full commentary of the movie in its entirety, but this has sat in my drafts for months. And I think the above covers a lot of what I have to say. Barbie was already an empowering brand full of decades of history, it didn’t need a movie sacrificing characters for a social statement.

Am I the only collector that could pay online prices for their grail piece(s) but won’t?

For example, Happy Family. I have never bought a single piece online.

Because I don’t want to pay $30 for a used Kelly-sized doll.

All my dolls have come from FB Marketplace, thrift , garage sales, ect.

I’m still holding out hope the secondhand gods will bless me with Happy Family Ryan or Kit’s Overalls

Have to re-make her necklace and clips but one of my childhood dream dolls is here! I'm gonna replace all my dolls batteries eventually, I just need to remember to get them lol.

When I was 8-13 my bedroom was fashion designer/paris/owl themed in true late 2000s/early 2010s tween fashion. So I still have a bunch of the decor from it and Fashion Fairytale Barbie fits in so well with it all.

So the past few days, I’ve been binge reading Caroline’s series.

And I have to admit, I avoided her series for a long time because I was under the impression that she was a BeForever character. I’m still not entirely clear on the timeline, but it seems she existed for about a year or two prior.

In any case, I greatly underestimated her because her series is absolutely unhinged so far. I might even rank her up there with Addy in terms of their meet story just throwing you right into the deep end with no clear resolution for most of the series.

I just finished the second book and I have to admit, I like how they’re handling the British. While they are still the enemy, both to the American perspective and to Caroline, I like that it’s not entirely a blanket statement. Caroline is interacting with British soldiers who aren’t necessarily her enemy and are just doing their job, like the one who whispered to her that Mr. Abbott has missed her and presumably smuggled the gift her way.
