Google Translate is (currently) My Friend: Pop Team Epic
It's no secret that my favorite skit in Pop Team Epic is "Ginza Hostess Detective". But there are a few things I was curious about that I don't remember being translated. Unfortunately, I can't check because I do not have a Crunchyroll subscription, and Pop Team Epic is no longer on Netflix (even though it was produced by Netflix.) So typically the site I'm on uses the Japanese (no sub) visuals with the Dub audio. So, here are things I noticed by using Google Translate's image translation feature.
Oh... the subtitle just kind of tells you who the culprit is... Alrighty then. Also, I dunno if the 10 means the tenth episode, the tenth season, the tenth arc, or if it's just there for no reason. But I stand by my statement that I need three seasons of 12 episodes and at least two OVAs of this specific plot.
And here I thought it was like "Women's" with an arrow. But nope. Just "one soup". The Pop Team girls aren't women, they're soup.
I guess the biggest part of the text is too jagged to read, but here's what Google says:
Red Bubble: P grade gourmet
White above the black frog thing: Give me
Bottom Yellow Text: A huge gathering of laid-back characters!!
Also it translated Popuko's moth into "In" for whatever reason...
Getting closer didn't help with the mascot poster, but at least now we know the other poster was advertising for a Marathon Event (if the running children didn't make that obvious...)
... oh! I thought it was going to be the hostess's name! But finding out she killed her husband? That's crazy.
I legit thought this translated into "Has No Idea". Oops.
Ew, no wonder Hiromi killed Suzuki, he's the reason her father died and was ugly? Gross. But for real, I could have guessed that the pretty girl was named Camille. It's kinda nice that they gave everyone a name. With the humor of Pop Team Epic, I low-key expected it to be like "Inspector Know-It-All" and "Clueless Hostess" and "Big Boobed Bimbo" or some shit.
Off the subject, but doesn't Inspector Higure look like the detective from Lupin the Third? Or is that the joke?
Okay, Pipimi! I didn't recognize that you were a business owner! Good for you!
... Wait... "Disclaimer: Organize Crime Group Official"? ... Pipimi, are you still doing the Yakuza thing from "The Dragon of Iidabashi: Pipi's Revenge"?
And that's everything in the background worth note! There was one small thing I didn't translate, but it wasn't really worth anything.
If we're being all the way for real, this was mostly just an excuse to talk about this skit again. It's really fun and sweet, and I would love if someone made a whole series off this premise. I mean... maybe not pointing out who the killer is in the subtitles. Or maybe pointing out who the killer is through the subtitles and just trying to figure out the motive and method could be fun.
I'm kinda bummed that there weren't any skits like this in season 2, and that there weren't any really memorable ones besides this and "The Dragon of Iidabashi: Pipi's Revenge"; which would also be a really cool series. It shows how the writers for Pop Team Epic have the capability for really good storytelling. Not to say that their short form skits aren't fun and entertaining, I'd just love to have both. Like with "Hoshiiro Girldrop"! Man, having "Ginza Hostess Detective", "The Dragon of Iidabashi: Pipi's Revenge", "Hoshiiro Girldrop", and Pop Team Epic? I guess I'd be spoiled, huh? A girl can dream.
