actually, in ski lodge two, Maya is canonically 15 and Josh is 17. yes they are both in different stages of their life but it's really not a big age difference therefore it shouldn't be a big deal.

maya is retconned to 14 in sweet sixteen apparently. ANYWAY. it’s not the age difference, my parents have a 4 year age gap. idc about age gaps. but josh is in uni,,,,maya just started high school. that’s a massive deal??? josh has literally said he’s too old for her in every episode he’s been in. josh is riley’s UNCLE. there’s a huge developmental gap between maya and josh in that sense. maya literally calls him uncle boing. uncle. do u really not cringe at this. im uncomfortable as hell.

it’s not about the AGE. i would have no issue if joshaya still had a 3 year age gap and maya was 30 and he was 33 and they got together. i also have no issue with the 10+ year age gap between many many many couples (all above the age of 20) that have been “going on for centuries”. 

it’s about their MATURITY, their stages in their lives. josh is a college freshman. he has friends who are having SEX. and DRINKING. he has friends who are about to do things that only adults do.

maya is a high school freshman. she’s fresh out of MIDDLE SCHOOL, for crying out loud. middle school, where they learn about how their body changes and shit like that. where NOBODY is thinking about sex or drinking.

think about how creepy of a relationship that would be, with josh, surrounded by his friends who are probably having sex & doing things that only 18-year-olds should be doing, dating maya, who’s new to high school and probably wouldn’t spare a thought for sex. yet josh is, because he’s 18, who can blame him???? [and if you’re going to argue that disney would never let that happen, shut up because this has nothing to do with what disney will or will not show, it’s more of the idea of it; realistically speaking] 

im not saying that in the future joshaya can’t happen, but they are really at different stages of their lives right now. and it won’t be healthy for them to get together at all, or even entertain the idea of getting together “someday” (and yeah, they are more or less bf/gf now. riley referred to him as “maya’s first boyfriend” in the last scene)

maya and zay. no one ever considers maya hart to be the type to break for a boy. she doesn’t let them think that, with her jagged edges and her quick wit. she doesn’t let them see that after she convinces lucas to pick riley (she’s the safest choice, the one he’ll most likely end up happy with), her heart sinks to her stomach every time she sees them together, all smiling and holding hands. she doesn’t let them see that despite putting riley’s wants first, and convincing herself that her heart doesn’t ache for him, she still loves him, and it kills her to see them together.

everyone thinks zay babineaux has the whole love thing figured out. he’s got a beautiful girl waiting for him in texas, who calls him daily and always says how much she wants him. but that’s stopped. lately, their phone calls have been arguments, about who should get on the plane to visit. and then, one day, she calls to break up with him. she says she found someone else, someone who’s in the same state, who can be there for her at her every beck and call.

he finds her at a bakery just a block down from topanga’s. he doesn’t ask why she’s there and not at the matthews owned establishment. he sits next to her in the booth and lets her put her head on his shoulder. when she asks him to tell her what’s going on with him, he tells her about vanessa, and how she’s broken his heart. they share a brownie, and in their darkest, loneliest night, they appear at each other’s fire escape with a pint of ice cream and stories to tell.
