I love thinking about the first time life made noise above the water. Not just the sound of movement, but vocalizing or other intentional sounds. It's such a hugely important part of life out of the water. I wonder what those first sounds were and who made them. Somebody with an exoskeleton, I'm sure. Did they click? Did they trill? Who heard them? Did they make a sound in response? Then it happened all over again when vertebrates crawled onto the land. Imagine the croaking, the beeping, the proto-amphibian songs. Yeah, somebody was probably already singing underwater, but there's something so special about singing in the air.

Once there were forests of ferns and the only sounds were the wind blowing through the leaves and the noise of falling plants. There were no trails, no footprints, nothing but the silent, stationery plants.

And then the Noisy Ones came.
