When I was 20, “what am I doing here?” was an important existential question. Now that I am 66, “what am I doing here?” involves staring at an open refrigerator.
context: within the first 10 minutes of our first playing session, the sorcerer has been attacked by a sentient bush
sorcerer: i cast chromatic orb on the bush for fire damage.
the sorcerer rolls a critical miss.
dm: you miss the bush, setting a nearby tree on fire.
the sorcerer’s turn comes up again.
sorcerer: god, fine, i cast firebolt on the bush.
the sorcerer rolls another critical miss.
dm: you miss again, lighting another tree on fire. fantasy smokey the bear hates you now.
There could be an animal with perfect camouflage, and we would never know.

AND WHEN ITS VERY APPARENT THAT IT WILL:

If you aren’t at least a little ashamed of your country’s history, you don’t know your country’s history.

Setting is a modern day urban-fantasy style campaign. All party members are half-bloods of standard fantasy races, mine is a half-gnome and a rogue equivalent. We’re trying to break into a facility where we think the government is holding other “specials.”
DM: Okay, so you sneak over the wall successfully and reach a fence.
Me: Is it electrified?
DM: Roll for it. (18) No, it’s not.
Me: But am I sure?
DM: You are 18/20 sure.
Me: I wanna roll to build an electroscope out of our weapons.
DM: A what?
Me: An electroscope. You use it to determine if an object is charged. I could make it using [fighter]’s sword, my dagger, and [bard]’s necklace.
DM: *sighs* Fine whatever. (20) *frustrated* Okay, you know what? It wasn’t electrified before, but just for that, it is now.
Women are considered fragile but I’ve never seen anything as easily wounded as a man’s ego.
I don’t understand why books have shifted from having summaries on the back of the covers to having one-line reviews.
Seriously though. I want to know what the book is about. Not that someone from the Evening Standard thinks it’s a masterpiece.
I have been waiting for this post my whole life.
Or how about the ones where it’s just an author photo on the back? Or the hardcovers where the summary on the flap of the dust jacket is preceded by a long paragraph about how great the author is and how their books have altered the very foundations of reality?
Like seriously, just tell me what the book is about. I know it might sound callous, but I don’t really care what the author looks like. They could look like Palpatine for all I care.
Seriously. Give me my synopsis back
