I've been researching Fifties/early Sixties graphic arts recently, and got thinking about a couple of animated one-shot cartoons which I found weirdly frightening as a very small kid. (But not so scary that I wouldn't watch them.)

I couldn't remember the titles of either one, so had to search by what I could remember of their content. I managed to find the first one, but couldn't find the right search terms to nail the second one. Then I had a theory: their look and vibe was so similar, I suspected they had the same director. So I found his name -- Izzy Sparber -- looked up a list of his works, and there was my second one.

With their dark humour, stylized animation, and graphic look, these are archetypal Fifties cartoons.

If I had to guess, probably half or slightly more of the work I've drawn was never used. Great projects like "Big Bug Man" or the theatrical version of "Hey Arnold, The Jungle Movie" will never be seen. I salute Jacob Pruitt (AKA Ziggy Cashmere) for creating this e-book of art salvaged from the cruel vagaries of show business.

BCG Movie: "Spacecation"

Now that it's premiered, I feel compelled to share some of the excellent BG layouts (see below) in the show; featuring the ones that originated in the storyboards I drew and supervised. The mission was clear: magnify the scope of the TV show to match the enormity of the story. My extensive Futurama experience helped.

The 2 bottom images are details of trash that make up the "trashteroid" field featured in the movie.

Throughout my career, it's been a challenge for me to think up a sufficient variety of trash props--on the fly-- that easily "read" as such when I storyboard. And I hate it when the artists lazily resort to making "mash potato-y" plops to suggest trash.

That said, this show did rise to the occasion and brainstormed quite a cornucopia of trash. And the mammoth "trashteroids" are an awesome and horrific sight.

The favorite piece of trash I included is an old "Fotomat" shack. Too bad it's appearance zooming past is fleeting.

Duckman plush toys:

Remember those Garfield plushes that stuck on car windows? Well, it appears someone thought it was the route to go with Duckman. At least the Cornfed plush is hugable.

There was precious little other Duckman merch ever made.

Big City Greens Movie "Spacecation" Premiere!

In advance of its release, cast, crew, plus ones, and BCG episodic crew gathered Saturday night to see the finished product. I finished my work on it a year ago and I was extremely anxious to see how it all came out. It's super and it should make a big splash (insert fingers crossed emoji here).

Above picture, from left to right are the show's creators: Chris and Shane Houghton, director Anna O'Brien and producer Mike Coughlin.

We all received a "Spacecation" Crew sweatshirt with this cool art on the back.

The never-produced animated Bukowski feature.

The lavishly produced, circa 1999 pitch book for an ADULT animated feature based on the writings of Charles Bukowski.

Klasky/Csupo, ripe with success from the Rugrats and Duckman shows, wanted to branch out into edgy, adult fare. Plus Eastern Europeans love Bukowski. K/C was rich with Hungarian and Russian talent. Simultaneously, a signature studio aesthetic was forming, lead by the same artists. The images above show the K/C style at its apex (here designed by the gifted Art Director, Laslo Nosek).

The script as I remember it was a wonderfully propulsive, perverse and funny take on gritty life in Los Angeles, however I think the ending went off the rails with a lot of gratuitous violence and mayhem in place of a satisfying finale.

Eventually, as industry wisdom has it, the K/C look became dated and that led to the demise of Klasky/Csupo. I don't necessarily agree, though it’s my belief that no one style should be superimposed on all shows: that would be pretentious. Form should follow function.

I believe that the end of K/C was more about the studios’ poor development environment that produced numerous failed pilots, giving the appearance of a studio that was out of gas.

The early, ancient manuscripts and materials of Squirrel Boy (2006)

Hanging "pride of place" in my home studio, the painting Everett Peck painted as part of his Squirrel Boy pitch to Cartoon Network. He kindly gave it to me when the show wasn't renewed and we were given end dates.

Once Cartoon Network bit, Everett went into overdrive at his studio in Oceanside creating many, many sketchbook drawings that informed the initial pilot and eventually the series.

Nathan "Jerry" Juran: Director

I was incredibly fortunate to meet and talk with Nathan Juran ("Jerry" to his friends) several times and through him, meet the stop-motion effects master Ray Harryhausen. They both had storied careers (and Harryhausen himself is iconic), however they were both sweet and humble gentlemen, always good for a good story and pearls of wisdom.

And they were practical:

Jerry had an Oscar and used it as a doorstop to his downstairs study. It was heavy and just the thing to keep the stubborn door open.

Ray had something of a second career doing talks and appearances. He brought his famous animation figures along with him; all in a battered, carry-on luggage bag. He generously rolled it out and pulled out the Medusa figure from Clash of the Titans and plopped it in my hands. It was nearly an out of body experience to hold something so precious.

I am eternally grateful to know both of them.
