Walk with me in my mind palace for a second.

Assuming Deuce was present in Alabasta. He always found Zoro to be the most tolerable of the Strawhats upon first meeting, tending when not immediately in Ace's vicinity to gravitate to the swordsman. Of course, being the way that he is, Deuce was extremely intimidated by him, but between the big personalities of the others and the general Luffy-ness of the captain, he enjoyed how quiet and seemingly normal he was. I can imagine they spent a while sitting quietly, generally near each other during Ace's stints with them.

I always imagine that Deuce is shockingly good at accidentally pissing him off when they speak. It's never anything too bad, but for someone trying to stay in his own lane, he's great at pushing the right buttons before immediately backtracking.

After Marineford, I have a HC that Deuce and Zoro met first, during one of the times when Deuce was collecting information about Luffy for the paper. It was that accidental meeting and Zoros straight forward nature that lead to him spending real time with the crew rather than just following on their heels.

Deuce is fascinated by Zoros history and since he was personally somewhat close with Rayleigh, is always making little connections in his writings about the new and old era. It's one of his favourite things to do now he can't write about Ace.
