KAI: well firstly, if i had the wrong girl i wouldn't tell you that
KAI: no, i meant to text you. what are you doing?
MASON: that's reassuring.
MASON: nothing. i'm off of work today. why?

he’d thrown his flask into the bushes because it was now empty, only to retrieve it a few moments later because it was the only one he’d found in the whole town - and because it was as far as he was aware, real gold. he’d stolen it from a kook’s holiday home last month. he watched people come out of the small bar happy-faced and tipsy, talking about mason and how she’d returned such a ‘well achieved young girl’ or whatever other bullshit. he’d ran out of alcohol at home, so he had found himself here. now it was almost a mission to get the alcohol without talking to mason, for no real reason. they hadn’t properly spoken in years, would she even still remember him? he sits at the seat furthest away from her at the bar, covering up bruised and battered knuckles with his denim jacket as he pretended to care about the top shelf. “do i know the bartender?” he speaks, far more spite in his tone than intended, and its evident in the way his stoic features soften a little as he finds her gaze. he nods once, “who’s on after you?” he pretends not to look at her, once again focused on the top shelf he couldn’t afford. like she was reading his mind, she mentions it. “ bourbon, on the rocks.” he reaches into his pocket, pulling out a few crumpled and scribbled-on notes, elastic bands and…. a marble? “ i can pay. ” he sighs, leaving the notes there but retrieving the other junk. “ when did you… get back?” he wants to pretend like he doesn’t care, like he is only here for the alcohol; but if that were true he would have left before he even got inside.

mason’s gaze lifts , momentarily , hazel eyes studied his features , sharp lines and wispy hair . . . handsome , as always , but TIRED . “ yes , ” it’s soft , muffled under the way she swallowed shock at the edge in his voice , “ you do know the bartender . ” she leans forward slightly , pattering her hands against the bar top with a small smile before rocking back and grabbing a glass . there was a time he would’ve come in just to see her . a time they’d sneak in with fake i.d.s . a time she would’ve found him leaning against her car with a smirk , waiting for her after her shift , and she’d greet him with arms wrapped around his waist and a warm smile . but NOW ? now he looked at her like she was a total stranger , and maybe she was . “ um , sammy’s around here somewhere , actually . casey’s in after me , and jake’s clocking in –– ” she flicked her wrist , looking down at the watch on an old leather band as she turned to the shelf behind her , swiping down an ornate bottle of bourbon , “ well , he should’ve clocked in ten minutes ago . so m’afraid you’re stuck with me for the time being . ” copper liquid poured over ice , and there’s a rueful grin on pretty lips as she shakes her head , back still turned to him . “ if i turn around , and there’s money on the counter , i’m kicking you out of this bar , ” screwing the lid on but leaving the bottle on the back counter , she swiveled and slid the glass in his direction , “ because like i said . . . there are perks to knowing the bartender . ” palms pressed onto the bar top and shifting her weight from one foot to the other . a tightening in her chest felt a lot like guilt , and she wasn’t sure if it was for not telling him she was back . . . or for the distance that had grown between them over the past summer . “ couple’a days ago . dad and i had to drive all my stuff back monday . finn spent all tuesday smotherin’ me . had to see my mom wednesday . worked thursday , and now i’m here , ” lips press together and she’s biting the inside of her cheek , “ so , i guess it’s lucky you came in . since i might not’ve seen you otherwise . ” her head tilts , slightly , and blonde strands fall from a loose bun , tickling her cheeks as her voice softens. , “ how’ve you been , kai ? ”

𝙄𝙏 𝙃𝘼𝘿𝙉 ‘𝙏 𝙌𝙐𝙄𝙏𝙀 𝙎𝙐𝙉𝙆 𝙄𝙉 𝙐𝙉𝙏𝙄𝙇 𝙉𝙊𝙒 , the fact that he , his mum & sister no longer called the cut home — though he wasn’t entirely sure if coston was even somewhere he called HOME any more — but now that he stood in front of the house his mum had picked out , her dream home , it all became that bit more REAL . after wanting nothing more than to give his mum & sister the life they deserve , he’d FINALLY managed to do just that . but that kind of shift brought with it a whole different kind of problem — new money was always judged harshly by BOTH sides & finding out what that meant for his family & HIM around town was so something he was dreading having to deal with — it had nearly been enough to simply stay up in new york — though the smile upon his mum’s face when he’d pulled up in the driveway was enough to make every worry worth it . but he’d be lying if he didn’t admit that there was also one certain thing , one certain person , that had also had him second guessing stepping foot in coston . a certain person that just so happened to have family in the same block as his mum’s house — though knowing how STRAINED her relationship with said family , he could only take a little comfort i knowing it meant the likelihood of catching her on this side of the island was little — though he couldn’t believe that he’d EVER think there was a positive to what she suffered with . it almost made him SICK to think . but then again , he often found himself feeling sick when he thought about mason sterling . not because of her , but because of the way things had been left between them — the way HE’D left things between them . for someone that promised himself to take every chance life gave him , he really did have a funny way of showing it . but life ALWAYS had a way of making you face the wrongs you’ve done .
with yet another box of his things safely placed within the room now deemed a home studio , kieran retook the front path back to the moving truck parked up in the drive but as eyes drifted up the road , he wished he’d stayed inside just that bit longer . of course it’s her , why wouldn’t it be . granted , he could probably slip back inside before she even noticed him . but it was really only a matter of time before they’d end up in the same space , he knew how much she HATED new york — why would she stay there without any reason to be there ? coston was HER home after all . just rip it off like a band-aid , that’s all you have to do . weight shifted as he lent back against the back of the moving truck , arms coming to cross across his chest just in time for mason to appear within his line of sight . “ still using that thing to get around everywhere , huh ? ” a brow rose in question , his face hardly exposing the small panic rising in his chest as a single corner of his lips lifted into a quiet smile , “ don’t know why i’m surprised though , i doubt you’d be you without that thing . ”

𝘚𝘜𝘔𝘔𝘌𝘙 𝘓𝘖𝘖𝘒𝘌𝘋 𝘎𝘖𝘖𝘋 𝘖𝘕 𝘊𝘖𝘚𝘛𝘖𝘕 ; that was the reason mason always opted for the worn down wheels of a long board that had seen better days . she’d need to start saving up for a new deck , soon . . . and her car –– despite it sitting idly in the driveway at home –– needed an oil change . her laptop had begun overheating when it was left running for too long , and the sole of her favorite pair of converse had begun to rip . THESE were the things that filtered in and out of her thoughts , a long list of quiet worries , as she rode along the smooth pavement of ocean street in the figure 8 of coston . houses that could’ve swallowed hers WHOLE loomed overhead , and every now and again , she’d find herself swerving away from luxury vehicles as they passed . SOMETIMES , she thought about how EASY it’d be , if she’d just . . . given in . if she’d been good at being the kind of daughter her mother wanted so badly . if she’d found a way to love the lifestyle kooks lived DAILY . but the years she’d spent in the dubois household caused her to whiter away to nearly nothing , and mason was NOT the kind of girl who would survive a life of grinning and bearing it , being told what to do at each turn . she’s on her way out of the neighborhood , backpack relatively light on her shoulders . the satin dress inside of it had been folded into a neat little square , something her mother had scowled at when mason told her she didn’t NEED a garment bag .
that was the only reason she’d visited that morning . she had to be fitted for a dress that she was required to wear the following friday . something shiny and pale yellow , given to her to compliment her skin tone and avoid clashing with the other members of the family . it made her nauseous , the way the seamstress praised her for avoiding putting on winter weight –– we might even have to take it IN , she’d boasted . she’d felt off since , but the was getting back to it with the salt water wind in her hair and the steady roll of road under her board . she’d be home , soon , and the REST of the weekend would be mellow . hazel eyes scanned the houses as the slowly became more humble ; a small moving truck caught her eye , and her neck craned with curiosity . boxes with handwritten labels , a keyboard of sorts , speakers . . . her brow furrowed , and she was DISTRACTED when his voice broke a peaceful quiet . she’d heard it over radio waves and in interviews on tv , quietly asked finn to turn it down or her dad to shut it off . but this was HERE . HE was here . . . and she startled , turning to find its source and losing her balance and stumbling off of the board as it continued in its trajectory , catching a bit of speed as she pushed off of the deck and sent it BARRELING into the neighbor’s emptied garbage can . flinching , she halfheartedly jogged after it , heart racing at the lilt of his accent . she hadn’t even LOOKED at him yet . “ yeah , i –– uh . . . i think it’s becoming a bit lest effective , as time goes on , ” the laughter that passes her lips is dry and nervous . it was bound to happen eventually , running into kieran , but she hadn’t expected it so soon . or in the middle of her MOTHER’S neighborhood . the last she saw him , midnight was trickling into dawn . his curls were tousled and her cheeks were flushed and LAUGHTER was hushed into the crook of his neck . her eyelids were heavy but her heart was wide awake , and when she woke up the next morning , she could’ve sworn it was a dream , if not for the t-shirt he’d left discarded in the corner of a new york apartment . TOO MUCH came rushing back at once , and it slammed into her the moment she turned to meet his eye . “ it’s less of a hazard , ” she noted , gaze shifting over him before her nose wrinkled and she turned back to upright an empty trash bin , “ usually , i mean . imagine if i’d plowed my car through those things . yikes . ” yikes . mason practically winced at the word , and she HATED how he’d become so distance . she was angry with him . . . and with herself , for missing him . “ i was down the street at mom’s and i –– ” she shook her head , looking up at the house behind him and stepping off of the road and onto the sidewalk , a few paces closer , but still not allowing her gaze to linger in his direction for too long , “ gosh , i knew you’d bought a house over here , but i didn’t realize it was this close to mom and marco’s . . . didn’t realize you’d be BACK either . ” lips purse and she meets his eye again , jaw clenching slightly before she tightly remarked , “ thought you might have a studio in la or something . leavin’ the SMALL town stuff behind , you know ? ”
