‘oh don’t tell me –’    this is admittedly a favourite part of theirs. the bit when the humans –or, whatever they are-realize they’re just that. tiny creatures, tiny lifespans, very little relevance. in that regard they consider the doctor can be even crueller than them. no, really. the doctor makes them feel ever so important. so grand. makes it all the more delightful when they’re tossed away. left behind. so bravely sacrificed. you name it, the doctor’s probably done it. what woe, what despair. it really is one of their favourites. they can’t help smiling. cheekingly, knowingly. blissfully sympathetic, even.  one day, they reckon, someone’s bound to get a little bit angry about it. that’ll be someone they get along with. never hurts to ask.

‘left behind already?’ a small pout. ‘i’d hoped you’d last longer. i did like you better than most of the others.’   they take a deep breath, and shrug slightly.   ‘ i know, i know. the circumstances were on me. but the decision?’  a click of their tongue.   ‘not much loyalty there. never is with her’

oh, this one. they really should’ve thought about their pick better. this one is so – earthy. all feelings. trying to talk. to reason. now chatting is always fun – there’s some gloating to be done and a whimsy little joke to throw in or to – but at a certain point they just want him to shut up. you know, be a man of action. oh, they remember how this one gets when he’s angry. so shout-y. violent.  too bad he takes a little too long to get there, they quite like it. well, they’ll push as many funky little buttons as they need to to get him there. it’s hardly any fun to be a diversion if you’re not a little diverted yourself, is it?

to make it evident they’re not, - not diverted, not touched, not even a little entertained – they roll their eyes. hands on their hips. never have they been more pleased with their mary poppins look of choice. especially because this one, they have miles on this one. they click their tongue.   ‘ is it now? ’

   ‘ let me ask you a teenie, tiny, wee little question … what difference are you suggesting we make, exactly?  ’ they give him a little pout, and a beat of silence. not long enough for him to answer –just for some dramatic effect. let him think it. let it sink in. ‘people die anyway. all of them. eventually. you of all people should know that, since you’re the one who went and got ours killed ‘  that’s the hook line and sinker. the button of all buttons. and they’re saying it for his sake, really. they still think it. who are they to spoil him the beautiful moment of finding out otherwise.

they let out an amused chuckle. you have to give it to them, time lord politics can be so, very amusing. not in and on themselves, of course, but when you look at them through the scale of the big picture.  don’t kill them –we’ve already killed their neighbours. oh, don’t you interfere with that –we’ve only just arranged it! only the amusement ends where the annoyance begins. they can appreciate hypocrisy, when done correctly. when it’s the perfectly timed punchline to a well written joke.  but time lords can’t even do that without wearing it down to becoming insufferable.

and she is the very epitome of time lord. the horrified tone in her voice, the disbelief. as if she hadn’t been personally responsible of decisions to do much, much worse. at least they’re never coy about it.    ‘ why, you know me. a little bit of this, a little bit of that  ’

they wave their hand flippantly, with a just a flippant shrug.  ‘ you know how i like to keep busy ’  at that their scrunch their nose and give her a little grin. picking at prodding at her nerves is just so much more fun when she is so … stuffy about everything. they could all use with a redefinition of the concept of fun.    ‘  speaking of . is this ... scolding going to take long?  yes yes, i know i’ve been very very bad,  whatever particular incident made it to your  so very exclusive priority list : yes, it was on me,  mea culpa.  apologies, won’t do it again, whatnot.  ’        they do have business to attend.  they won’t do whatever was worthy summoning them here for again, no, but with this wild imagination of theirs. someone’s got to keep the universe on its toes.
