         as brilliant as she was beautiful , somehow harleen always managed to get tangled up with psychos -- not just because it was her line of work .  she’d heard of what recently had taken place in the bay beside gotham city and was for some reason intrigued and excited to learn that she’d be analyzing the painted man behind it .

             she had her clipboard attached to her desk ,  next to the button she was to press to alarm the guards that she was ready for her patient’s session with her .  psychopaths ran very high in a city like gotham , but none ever as interesting as this one .  THE JOKER ,   they called him .  harleen laughed behind her desk and pushed her glasses up and off of her head as she watched a group of her co-workers lead in the man entangled in the straight jacket .  they sat him down and she shooed them away eagerly , before crossing the room to speak to him .

James looks down at Elizabeth, brows arching, and watches her knock the knife out of his hand. He heaves a sigh from deep in his chest as he bends down to pick it up, the syrupy, dark blood still dripping from the edge. When she slits the man’s throat, James audibly groans.

“Important?” he argues, tossing the knife onto a nearby table and slipping out of his bloodied apron. “There was nothing so important about this man that he couldn’t suffer our wrath,” he reaches into the pocket of his trousers and pulls out his cigarette case, pulling one out and tapping it against the sterling silver. “Is that what you’ve come to tell me?” he puts the cigarette to his lips, then lights up. “To stop killing?” he takes a drag and blows it in her direction.

“Because, dearest, that would be futile — however,” he takes another drag, this time blowing the smoke upward. “I will take your suggestion into the highest consideration.”

An evident snarl crosses the blonde’s face at her husband’s total disregard for her words. “Look, here, James---” She crossed the room and gripped him by the same wrist that he was holding the cigarette in. “I don’t CARE who you hack to pieces, I don’t care who you torture SLOW and long, HELL, I don’t even care who you string from the hotel’s rooftop --- but in order for this hotel to NEVER be torn down, it must become a historical landmark.” 

She dropped his wrist and lit a cigarette of her own, rubbing one side of her temples. “I can’t secure that, or all of the things that go bump in the night here if you kill another rich man I could possible get into keeping it around for that long! You seem to pick out the ONES that are needed. Go back to killing poor innocent women --- or watch the hotel come down.”
