Heat Wave
A long hot Summer
Dragging through the daze
Of heat on pale concrete
Parched and longing
Come the awful storms
As to be a deluge
As to be a drink for the thirsting ground
And the pavement hazy in the Sun
Now rain-soaked and dripping
Upwards with the humidity
And petrichor scents
Just like the season it is
Burning away
Make this Summer end
And it will, in time
Before coming all again
Hotter than ever
Hotter than Hell
Hotter than the grill marks left on meat
And embers at the fire pit
Where all once gathered
Breathing in the mosquito-killing fog
As fireflies danced
And bats passed beneath stars
Like constellations pointed out
All melted away
In the long hot Summer
