I'm sure it's here somewhere...
Rain. I hate rain.
Caiden sits huddled under a low overhang outside, soaked to the skin and shivering from the rain that had started to fall heavily. He stares out into the street beyond, watching the summer storm for lack of anything better to do. He talks quietly to himself, trying to keep his spirits reasonably high. “It’ll be over soon. You won’t have to sleep here, you know that. It’ll be over soon.”
Matt stops as he approaches the overhang, squinting through the rain and frowning when he spots the man he had met sleeping on the bench a few weeks before. The man was homeless, he was sure of it now, and he absolutely couldn't just let him sit out there. Not this time. "Excuse me," Matt cleared his throat and stepped under the overhand beside Caiden, shaking out his umbrella when he had the opportunity, "What are you doing out here?"
Hard to believe...
… I suppose you’re right. The villains will always come back, but so will the heroes.
Yeah. And the heroes usually win, too.
Hard to believe...
There are still people killing each other incessantly. Have you see the war in Israel?
I don't--I don't mean to be rude or insensitive or anything, because I understand that it's a very personal subject for you, but, uh... In my experience, I guess, one bad guy being stopped doesn't stop all of them. Like, in the comic books, there's always someone new for the superheroes to battle even though they've defeated a bunch of villains before, and I know that's all just made up, but, I mean... It's the most realistic part of the books.
Hard to believe...
No, no… It is the fact that I lived through the holocaust and it is like we have nothing to show for it.
We do, though. There are museums and monuments and memorials and movies and comics and everything...
-someone bumps into him on the sidewalk-
I’m perfectly fine!
Oh, good. I was worried. I have a habit of being clumsy and I hate when I accidentally get other people hurt because of it. Yesterday, at work, I tripped over the edge of the carpeting behind the concessions counter and I fell into one of my coworkers and then we both fell over and I felt really awful about it because she landed weirdly on her elbow and you know, I'm pretty sure I'm rambling, so I'm sorry and I'm just going to shut up now.
-asleep on a park bench-
Still half asleep, Caiden lightly batted Matt’s hand away, grumbling. ”Five more minutes…”
Matt chuckled quietly at Caiden's words, but then shook his head and tried to wake him again, "Excuse me... Sir, uh, I really think you should wake up now."
Hard to believe...
People keep telling me that’s the way to live…
Oh, I'm not--that's not what I'm saying! You don't have to live like that if you don't want to. I just... Do, I guess. Personally. I dunno, never mind me.
Hard to believe...
It’s been over sixty years since I escaped and there’s still so much hate in the world…
-quietly- I don't have a lot of hope for it.
-someone bumps into him on the sidewalk-
I’m sorry for my part as well.
So you're... You're alright, then?
-someone bumps into him on the sidewalk-
-teeters back a bit from being hit, but recovers quickly- I’m okay! It’s alright, I’m okay! Are you okay, mister? Do you want help picking your things up?
-crouches and begins to gather his things- No, no, it's alright, I've got it. I'm really--I'm so sorry for running into you. -pauses, looking up at Raphael- Are you sure you're okay?
-someone bumps into him on the sidewalk-
I’m so sorry, I’ve just been a little distracted recently. -her hand automatically moves to her bump-
Oh. Oh, God. Oh, God, you absolutely have my apologies, I didn't--are you alright?
-someone bumps into him on the sidewalk-
No, I really wasn’t paying attention.
I--I suppose we just both weren't. So again, I'm sorry for my part of it.
-someone bumps into him on the sidewalk-
It is fine! I think I got in your way though, since you dropped papers.
No, no, really. It's was probably me. Usually is, anyway. I'm sorry again. You weren't in a hurry to get anywhere, were you?
Fire. Damn it.
-covers his mouth, mildly horrified- Oh gods, no! I didn’t mean… That was more directed at the universe, not at you. Here, I can heal you right away! Sorry, I’ve really got to learn to watch my mouth when I’m on the job.
-carefully takes hold of Matt’s arm, looking it over- This doesn’t look too bad, it should just take a minute or so. Is there anything else you’d like me to look at? Any other injuries?
No, really, it's okay. I wouldn't mind going to--... -watches Cameron take his arm and falls silent-
No, uh... That's it. It was just my arm.
-asleep on a park bench-
Caiden is passed out on the cold metal of a park bench, curled in on himself with his chest facing toward the back rest. His arms are curled around him defensively, and this posture seems comfortable to him, as though he’d slept in this pose many times before.
Matt notices the man almost as soon as he passes the bench, but it takes a moment of biting his lip and debating with himself before he decides to crouch beside it, "Excuse me..." He lightly touches the man's shoulder, not wanting to startle him, and tries again, "Excuse me, sir?"
-someone bumps into him on the sidewalk-
Oh no, no! -she drops down to help him- It’s my fault, love.
No, it was mine. I should've watched where I was going.
