freya looked at her brother and smirked, trying to hide her amusement towards his murderous and eager words by rolling her eyes. “and i’d be happy to let you. witches are only good if they’re on our side. i do want a bite out of her, though, so keep that in mind.” freya wasn’t usually so eager to make one suffer —- but for all the witch had done to the town and the supernaturals in it, the witch would be let off easy. freya had to roll at his little fresh ingredients comment. she stuck her tongue out. “snob.” her eyes widened slightly upon hearing her brother’s remark. “if you had to bet on it, who would you say did it?” freya didn’t believe any of them did it — it was bad timing and she believed her siblings to be smarter than that — but it didn’t mean she couldn’t entertain the idea. “family meeting? so we can all hear baldr scorn us? it’d be nice to be on the same page as everyone, though. wanna call one? it was your idea, after all.”

“I’ll do my best to share with the rest of the class.” He wasn’t surprised Freya also wanted a bite- even the more responsible of the Björnssons wouldn’t say no to a little vengeance every now and then. As he ran through the long list of his siblings in his mind, he came up blank as to who the culprit would be. Not because he didn’t think any of them would do it, but because he though all of them might. He’d witnessed so many little temper tantrums through the centuries. Though this was somewhat more than a little tantrum, going after an alpha and a coven’s queen. This was deliberately stirring up trouble- more his m.o. than any of his siblings’. “Hard to say. Maybe Eerika? She gets dreadfully bored.” He took a long pause as he contemplated further, “Even if it isn’t one of us, is it really so bad if people think it is? I’d like to get a bit of healthy fear running through the town.” He shrugged at her questions, “I quite enjoy it when Baldr gets on his high horse. I like watching as everyone immediately tries to drag him off it. Maybe I will call one. I’ll ask around and see if people are interested.”

Booker decided that the best course of action right now was to simply ignore him. But the bear didn’t have very good focus and his words made it even harder for her to get her fish done, so she just sighed and left the partially gutted fish back in the bucket. She turned around to face him and noticed his hand, so she went to shake it with her bloody pale hand full of fish scales. “Booker. What the fuck are ye doing in the middle of the woods anyway?” The bear asked, genuinely curious now. “And why do ye keep starin’ at the axe as if it were a piece of candy?”

He was pleased that she had shifted from threatening him to asking him questions. “How about we trade, Booker? I’ll answer your questions if you answer one of mine.” He wiped his bloody hand on his pants. Matthias had gotten into the habit of wearing clothes that washed blood out easily. It was altogether more efficient. “What are you? It’s rare I meet a supernatural I can’t clock.”

         “ then  you  should  get  used  to  disappointment. ”        was  her  quick  reply.  she  carried  about  her  morning  prep  work.  make  sure  things  looked  tidy  before  going  to  open  the  blinds.  izel  would  go  about  her  business  day  with  or  without  the  irritating  vampire  nipping  at  her  heels.        “ my  edge  is  controlled.  five  hundred  years  is  a  long  time.  it  changes  a  person.  i  like  the  peace  and  quiet  now.  i  don’t  hate  vampires  on  sight  anymore.  so,  if  you  came  here  looking  for  a  fight  then  you’ve  come  to  the  wrong  place. ”

Matthias gave a low whistle. A peace-loving Lykosson?  Either she was fooling herself or five hundred years was much longer than he thought. Their kind of fervor doesn’t just go away. Maybe Izel had simply gone too long without a good enemy. Well, best to find out. “I didn’t come looking for a fight,” He lied blatantly, “I came looking for good art.” He picked up the painting he was standing in front of and casually tore it in half. “That wasn’t good art.”

“Oh yeah, he seems..fun.” She smiled again, tilting her head at his question and compliment, the tiny smirk starting to turn up the corner of her lips, rare that they were bare rather than blood red. “You should, drinks on him of course.” The smirk grew with a small laugh, taking a moment to figure him out better, “So which are you, Matthias or Kael? I believe I’ve met the other men in your family?” Met was an understatement but she wasn’t about to air her private life to anyone, not even an original.

He chuckled at the understatement, knowing all too well Askel’s violent and hedonistic tendencies. “That’s one word for him.” It was interesting that she seemed to know his family and yet was neither angry at him nor cowering. It was rare that someone got along with the Björnssons. If she’d heard his name before he wondered what she knew of his reputation. “Matthias. And you are?”

freya let out a small scoff — not at her brother’s words but at what drove him to say them. freya hadn’t cared to find out what had happened in this town just yet. “a witch did this, no doubt. you know how crafty they are.” they both did; their whole family did for that matter. as he returned her cup, the vampire sent her brother an over-the-top glare, “you know, i can tell you which barista gave me this. if you liked it, of course.” she spoke casually and to any curious eavesdropped, she was still talking about coffee. a long sigh escaped her; she didn’t regret what she had done but the wolf’s attitude was still engraved in her mind. “we’re going to be blamed for it. the wolf and the witch.” her voice was lower to avoid any onlookers.

He nodded. He didn’t like witches any more than he liked wolves. His father had instilled in him a deep hatred of the magic users that he still hadn’t shook after a thousand years. I didn’t help that it was a witch who had made them all miss the last couple of centuries. “And when we find which witch I’d be happy to do the honors.” Matthias shrugged at Freya’s offer. He wasn’t picky about who he drank from. “It’s not bad, but I prefer my ingredients fresh.” He quirked an eyebrow at her concern. “Of course we are. Hell, I half think it was one of us.” His family wasn’t exactly known for their restraint and the timing of these deaths seemed to match their arrival. “We should have a family meeting sooner or later. Catch up.” Matthias knew it was probably a bad idea, but damn would it be fun to watch.

“i’m bored of it already, it’s all anyone is talking about.” whined the youngest —  though she’d scream at anyone for calling her that. eerika was easily bored, and all the talk about the mutt and witch fell on her ears far too much. “this place is just as miserable as always.” after five  hundred years asleep, she just wanted to explore the world.

Matthias nodded. He often found himself agreeing with Eerika. Of his siblings, she was probably one of his favorites. “Why couldn’t we have gotten stuck in... New York? Paris? A place where things happen?” A devilish glint crept into his eye, “Though we can always get there if we only find what’s causing this. And kill it.”

part of her was thankful for wanting to fill out a report. it’d get her mind off of the murders for a bit. “you can call me rosalie if you want.” she worked hard for her title, but the formality was a bit too much. she still preferred her first name. “come with me and we can fill out a report. we can go to my desk.” she placed a ‘be back soon’ sign up at the desk before motioning him to follow her to the back. “yeah, it was bad. i’m sure you’ve already seen it all over the news. i feel like i’ve been awake for two days straight.” she fought back a yawn as she spoke. “i mean the biggest help i need right now is answers. if you know anything, you’d be the biggest help.” sighing, she opened the door to her office, allowing matthias to step in first before following after him.

“Rosalie it is, then.” He’s grateful that she doesn’t seem to want the formality of her title. He isn’t sure he could give anyone, let alone a wolf, such a level of respect for long without it coming out sarcastic sooner or later. He happily follows Rosalie to her office, eager for the chance to spot any interesting papers that might be lying around. “You should get some rest. Take care of yourself. Besides, I come up with some of my best ideas after a long night’s sleep.” He smiles at his own joke, thinking of the five-hundred-year slumber he’d just awoken from. When she asks him for answers, that smile only broadens. What a lovely opportunity. “I don’t know much, but, well, I’m sure you’re aware of Michael and Tabitha’s.... connections.”

There was little chance that he recognized her scent. Shapeshifters were rare, bear shapeshifters even more, and a grizzly with polar bear blood was almost mythical. She always saw this as an advantage, no one would expect her to turn into a gigantic beast, ready to rip anyone to shreds. “Then ye didna notice the markings on the trees, or the smell, but I’ve claimed this area until I can find a way to get out of here, and I dinna like having guests.”

Booker managed to catch him looking at the axe from the corner of her eye, the bear growled and went to snatch it away from him, last thing she needed was an armed stranger behind her back. “They should, if they want to wander these woods, but they won’t get steel as good as this one.”

Matthias walked up to a nearby tree and regarded the marks she was referencing, squinting to examine them. Were those bear claws? Curious. She seemed to be implying they were hers and he wasn’t familiar with any sort of were-bear thing. He flashed the redhead a smirk, “Well, maybe you only don’t like guests because you haven’t met me yet.” He extended his hand to her for a handshake, half curious if she’d try to chop it off with the axe. It truly was a lovely piece of steel.  “Name’s Matthias. What’s yours?”

         oh  great,  it  was  the  annoying  one.  she  looked  over  her  shoulder.  it  was  odd  to  see  matthias  again.  odd  and  entirely  unwelcome.  she  didn’t  much  care  for  a  bored  björnsson  trying  to  disrupt  her  happy  and  easy  going  way  of  life.  and  so  she  smiled  at  her  old  enemy  and  managed  to  keep  the  most  kind  tone  to  her  voice  that  she  could  muster  up,        “ oh,  it  is  so  good  to  see  that  you’ve  finally  woken  up  from  your  little  nap !  but  if  you  would  so  kindly  fuck  off  that  would  be  just  fantastic ! ”        with  that,  she  swings  open  the  door  and  enters  the  studio,  not  bothering  to  check  if  the  vampire  might  follow.  he’d  get  bored  of  her  soon  enough.

He was disappointed that Izel wasn’t immediately trying to kill him. As she walked past him to enter the studio that disappointment shifted into mild anger. If there’s one thing Matthias doesn’t like, it’s being ignored. He followed her through the door and quickly took stock of his surroundings. Lots and lots of fragile paintings. “I’m not in the habit of doing the kindly thing, Izel.” He stepped towards a painting by the door and regarded it with mock fascination, “And as far as I recall, neither were you. Lost your edge?”

“Wasn’t mine either.” She had hated how quiet it was at first, too much silence for her head to fill with its whisperings but eventually, she had settled, found her little corner of happiness in the form of the Vortex. “Oh? Who’s your brother?” Another question she didn’t really need to ask, it didn’t take much to put it all together really but there were certain appearances that she had to keep, “I own it actually, though I’m more often found on the bar than in the office, I’m not very good at that side of owning a club.”

He got the sense she knew exactly who his brother was, there could only be so many new workers at the club, but he was willing to play along and be polite. “Askel. He’s hard to miss.” Matthias raised an eyebrow, if she was the owner, even better. “Damn, you own the place? Hat’s off to you, I’ve only heard good things. I was thinking of swinging by some time soon, paying my brother a visit.”

“fascinating! please, do tell me more.” spoke the red head, sarcasm dripping from her saccharine voice, mock interest covering her delicate features. only awake a week, and she’d already compelled a human to teach her everything she needed about technology, but random facts kept coming up and she felt the need to act out rather than absorb in the new information. today, it was about dead bodies, which the red head could really care less about.

Matthias raised an eyebrow at his sister’s sass. “You really aren’t interested in a dead mutt and a dead witch? It’s the most interesting thing that’s happened in this fucking town since we woke up.” Though that was a remarkably low bar in his opinion. He could hardly blame Eerika for being a little bored.

hearing a voice, she glanced up. her nose scrunched up almost immediately. she still wasn’t used to the new smells–even after three years. she especially wasn’t used to the smell of vampires. he was a new face, though. at least, she couldn’t remember seeing him before. rosalie was almost positive she knew the supernatural residents in town. a new face was rare. “animal abuse? maybe.” the folder shut, and she rested her pen on top of it. “i can help you fill out a report, or i can go out there later.” she stood up from her chair, extending a hand out to him. “rosalie avalon–i’m the sheriff.” she still beamed anytime she introduced herself. the title was her best accomplishment. “seriously, i don’t know if we’ll look into it much. not after last night. still, i’ll help you fill out a report and i can try and look into it as soon as i can.”

“I’d love some help filling a report, thank you.” He fought a smile as she brought up the murders. He was going to try and ask her about them sooner or later and it felt much less like prying if she was the one who mentioned them. Matthias accepted her handshake, “Nice to meet you Sheriff Avalon, my name’s Matt.” Best to butter her up with respect and avoid his last name for now. He’d get more information from her that way. “I totally understand if you don’t get around to investigating for a while. Last night was brutal. I know I’m just some random guy, but let me know if there’s anything I can do to help.”

Oh, no, she had no time for any smartass vampire right now, not when she was in the middle of cooking her dinner. “Aye, yer face might look real bonnie without eyes, or ears. I could do that for ye if ye wish.” Booker growled at the stranger, rolling her eyes before turning around to go back to her thing. He seemed annoying, and not the kind of person she wanted to waste her time in. “Ye got no reason to be in my territory, lad, so how ‘bout ye leave me alone? There are some hiker trails not so far from here if ye are looking for a meal.” Booker said as she dropped her axe and brought out a fish from the bucket, beheading and gutting it with a dagger.

“I think I look real bonnie already so I’ll pass, thank you.” He raised an eyebrow at her mention of the hiking trails. She knew what he was, but he didn’t recognize her scent. He didn’t like being on uneven footing like that. “Your territory, huh? And here I thought these woods were public property.” Or at least wolf territory. Matthias crouched down to look at her axe as she dropped it in favor of a smaller weapon. In another life, a long, long time ago, he’d been a blacksmith, and he never quite lost his appreciation for a fine weapon. “Besides, hikers don’t usually carry pretty things like this.”

Frowning, Kat took the time to think about what he was saying, he was new to town and yet there was something familiar about him, “Oh? How’re you liking it?” Was he able to leave? She didn’t bother asking, she knew the answer if she thought about it at all, “I knew of them, we might have met but I couldn’t be sure, a lot of faces pass through the club every night, it would be a miracle if I remembered even a tiny percent of them.”

“I’m not liking it, if I’m being honest. Small towns aren’t really my thing.” Matthias much preferred big cities. There’s just more variety and you can get up to so much more trouble without someone noticing. His ears perked up at her response. Someone in the club could be a very useful friend for him to make. Lots of free-flowing information and liquor up for grabs. “You work at The Vortex? My brother just started there.” He could theoretically just get drinks and updates from Askel, but it was always good to have a second source where his family was concerned.

         today  would  be  a  struggle.  she  could  feel  it  in  the  air.  the  mark  of  death  hung  over  briar  creek  once  more  and  would  likely  way  it  down  for  weeks  to  come.  this  old  wolf  truly  hoped  it  would  be  the  only  blood  spilled,  but  feared  the  worse.  and  still,  life  had  to  go  on.  she  could  not  simply  sit  in  her  home  watching  the  news  of  the  horrors  that  had  happened.  so,  she  got  on  about  her  day.  the  gallery  and  studio  wouldn’t  open  itself.  however,  there  was  a  distinct  lack  of  focus  in  her  actions.  made  obvious  by  her  trouble  even  unlocking  the  door  to  the  studio.        “ stupid  fucking  door. ”        she  punched  the  door  for  emphasis  of  her  irritation—  leaving  behind  a  dent  in  her  wake—  paying  no  mind  to  who  might  see  her.  with  that  little  bout  of  violence  the  lock  and  key  decided  to  finally  work.        “ that’s  more  like  it !  glad  you  know  who's  boss. ”

Matthias wanted to go poke a bear. Word around town was that one of the Lykossons worked at Athena’s Art Studio. He wasn’t sure which of the crew he was going to get, but he’d be happy with any of them. He wanted a fight, or at least to start some shit, and he’d yet to meet a Lykosson who’d turn that down. When he sees that it’s Izel he smiles. Perfect, he got the angry one, and she’s already punching a door. “Your pack has really gone to shit if you’re trying to convince a door you’re the alpha.”

the shrill scream had startled her awake. she’d only left the police station once today–and that was to get more coffee. she sat at the front desk of the station as the usual receptionist was off for the day. rosalie didn’t mind the job though, and it helped her keep a better eye on things. her paperwork was sat out in front of her as she flipped through her newest case that had only developed this morning. hearing the door to the station open, rosie didn’t bother looking up. she was too focused on the case at hand, and she was worried about herself at this point. “can i help you?” her voice was as friendly as it always was, but she was too invested in what was in front of her. Matthias wanted to take stock of all of the players in town. There were the supernatural players, of course, but humans were also useful from time to time- the ones who carry guns moreso than others. A few days ago he’d spied a couple of witches raising trouble and killing some woodland creatures. He figured it might be fun to go report them down at the station. It’d give him an excuse to go meet the police while, more importantly, also irritating some witches. He strode into the BCPD expecting to a human behind the desk, and he frowned when instead he was met with a werewolf. Ah well, from lemons, lemonade. He could still work with that. “Yes, I’m not sure what crime this is exactly, but I saw a bunch of people killing animals in the woods yesterday. Horrible stuff.”

There was a hint of pride when she caught the laugh that almost was coming from him, at least someone thought her comment amusing. “Oh? At least I’m not alone in being disgusted at their choice of murderous timing then.” She smirked, sipping at her coffee to hide as it grew to a grin watching people try to move the bodies, “Did you know them well?”

“Oh no, I Don’t know much of anyone yet. I’m new in town.” Sort of true. Though he’d been slumbering in it for hundreds of years it had only been a week since he’d gotten to stretch his legs- though there were far too many familiar faces floating about for his liking. “Did you know them?” He figured she probably didn’t because she was cracking jokes, but if she did he’d be eager to hear her thoughts on what had happened.
