Professional Development Plan for myself?

wow~~ so spooky Tumblr~~ nice try~~ hehehe
My Opportunity Map
Looking at my opportunity map that I just done, I listed some skills that can help me get a career in the near future. I did list some wild card skills just in case something goes terribly wrong, I know that I will always a plan B to back myself up. Also, there are some skills are not listed because I’m not so sure if I want to actually enhance these skills and improve myself to it. But for now, I’m not going to list them out.
As for the Knowledge Economy, I believe having transferable skills such as, marketing, communication, and so on; are really good in the current era, as you can either use it to enhance yourself better if you already learned it or you could learn it from the beginning. I would definitely like having great communication skills as communication and relationship are formed by speech, chat and talking. So I believe having those skills are crucial in the world today. Because of this, I will definitely improve myself in this area to further gear up for the future of work and be a great worker of the future.=)
As for the Asian Century, just I have mention in one of my earlier post, I believe Opportunity aspect will be the most important for me as from my mind map, and you can see that I would like to start my own business in the near future. I see lots of great potential in Asia as they still can grow in dramatically ways in terms of economy and infrastructure although Asia itself have a lot of internal problems but I believe that it can start to change from within by us as the future generation of workers and leaders. I also believe that once they internal government systems of Asian countries start to change, I do think that the country will definitely improve in economy and relations and infrastructures. But all of these have to start from the new generation, the children of tomorrow, we got to educate them about the future. And we are here to make a difference in the world with our work and knowledge. So hopefully I can start my own business and help improve the world bit by bit. ^-^
Exactly that~
My SWOT Analysis
My Mission Statement
Vision Statement
“I aim to be a world-class event organizer who provides audiences and clients with long-lasting and happy memories.” –Matthew 2016.
^ The vision above was my initial statement when I started this class at the beginning of the semester. But now, after really giving my future a good thinking, I came to realise that I really do not know what I would want to do in the future as my career pathway. But there is one thing that I do know what I want to become. I want to be someone respectable in today’s society.
So here is my new Vision Statement: “To become the next Bill Gates in self-development and love God.”- Matthew 2016.
Mission Statement
With my new Vision Statement, I wish to become the next Bill Gates. Be it self-development or success or businessman-wise, I would like to be someone as respectable as Bill Gates. Also, I did mention about loving God too for I’m a Christian. I will read the Bible daily and pray daily and seek him and do God’s work.
I definitely want to complete my degrees: Bachelor of Business (International Business) and Bachelor of International Studies, which will likely be completed by the end of 2018 and get myself a job to sustain myself. I’m believe myself to be a determined person, only when I set my mind on something that I want to achieve or complete like an achievement or goals. No matter how tough the goal is, I will see it done.
I’m a family-oriented, creative, analytical, and positive person. I’m family-oriented because I think that relationships in general are the best things in life. I prefer having a deep relationship with someone, be it friends or spouse or family, rather than being superficial.
I’m creative because ever since I was young, I always tend to use my imaginative ideas to create something from Lego blocks or doodle it out on a piece of paper. I also like to get other people ideas and mash them up and create something out from it. Even till this day, I still tend to come up with some pretty crazy ideas.
You can say that I’m quite up in the air type of person since I was young, but ever since I gained more knowledge and information throughout the years of growing up, I can say that I have now become quite analytical to situations that are presented to me. The current me, tend to analyse every possible situation outcomes. This somehow led me to overthink sometimes which really stop me from doing things that I think is risky or not beneficial which in fact they are not after thinking back of that particular situation.
I’m also a positive individual, although I do often tend to analyse my situations, I will try my very best to get best possible positive outcomes rather than the negatives outcomes, I’m believe I’m positive because when my friends are in the slumps, I would always encourage them and try my best to help them get out from the dark times as much as I could.
I still have about 2 years before I graduate from Flinders University. So during that time, I think I would be able to know what I want to really do as my future career during my time in Flinders. But for now, I would use every opportunity that is given to me and let it not go to waste and use it to the fullest.
Personal Mission Statement:
To leave a legacy that will be looked unto for generations to come.

Pod2: Global Mindset
What the Financial Times definition of global mindset is true at some point to the world we live in today. Our world economies todays prosper with trade and knowledge with the help of technology that is so ever growing. Yes, I do agree that the Financial Times definition of global mindset is geared towards commercial or business applications for global corporations. This is because these corporations are, one way helping the world to prosper in terms of economy and infrastructure and they pretty much influence the world’s population with their brand names.
In any part of the world, leadership is about influence. There are many ways to influence others: Directing them, rewarding them, inspiring them, or giving them ownership of the decision are but a few examples. The leader’s task in a multicultural world is to influence direct reports, project teams, supply chain partners, client organizations, and regulatory agencies that have different cultural, political, and institutional backgrounds.
But there’s a disconnect. In most societies, ordinary citizens are socialized to learn how to work with people who are like them. They develop a unicultural lens that helps them understand and interpret their surroundings.
This has worked for many centuries, but it is an obstacle now — children grow up learning how to work with people who are like them; as adults, they start working for companies who require them to work with people who are different from them and who have different cultural lenses.
So what does the leader of the future need to be successful? Leaders who have a high level of Global Mindset are more likely to succeed in working with people from other cultures. Leaders with a strong stock of Global Mindset know about cultures and political and economic systems in other countries and understand how their global industry works. They are passionate about diversity and are willing to push themselves. They are also comfortable with being uncomfortable in uncomfortable environments. They are also better able to build trusting relationship with people who are different from them by showing respect and empathy and by being good listeners.
And I personally believe that everybody in this world has a leader in them whether they know it or not as everybody is given different gifts. If they do know it, they still have the options to choose to be one or not. So I believe it is really up to us to define our future ourselves.
Pod 2: Asian Century
I believe that the Opportunity Aspects will be the most important aspects of the Asian Century as I believe the countries in Asia will have a lot of opportunity of Growth in terms of Economic and Development of Infrastructure as many of the countries are growing quite rapidly in their Gross Domestic Profit as its country which in terms gave the Asia the chance to show its development and production to the world. But Asia’s future will be in their own hands. They can either make the whole region rich and powerful or poor and undeveloped as a region.
As for myself, I think the problems is the most important aspect for this matter. This is because Asia has a reputation of being corrupted and doing things under the table. I’m saying this because of first-hand experience. For example, in Malaysia, if you get stopped from the police because of speeding, you can either choose to pay a bribe and not get a ticket or just accept the fine. Either way, you got the option to choose. But in Australia, once you get speeding ticket, you wouldn’t dare to bride the police officer, because if you do, you will get another fine for bribing or even go to jail for it. (Not sure as I never gotten a speeding ticket here in Australia) So I really do think that for Asia to rise and be powerful, they first need to clear out the corrupted officials from the roots, so that way I really believe that the nation will be able to arise from the depths and be a super-rich nation and powerful nation that it so rightful should be.
This is how our world works.. Sadly.
Pod2: Knowledge Economy
What is ‘Knowledge Economy’?
Knowledge Economy is a system of consumption and production that is based on intellectual capital - value of a company’s employee knowledge, business training and any propriety information that may provide a competitive advantage. Economy that is based on creating, evaluating and trading knowledge. In a knowledge economy, labour costs become progressively less important and traditional economic concepts such as scarcity of resources and economies of scale cease to apply.
Examples of Knowledge Economy activities are research, technical support and consulting or service-based works.
Basically, The knowledge economy addresses how education and knowledge — generally called "human capital — can serve as a productive asset or a business product since innovative and intellectual services and products can be sold and exported and can yield profits for the individual, the business and the economy. This component of the economy relies greatly on intellectual capabilities instead of natural resources or physical contributions. In the knowledge economy, the production of services and products that are knowledge-based provides rapid acceleration in the technical and scientific fields, making way for more innovation in the economy as a whole. Read more: Knowledge Economy http://www.investopedia.com/terms/k/knowledge-economy.asp#ixzz4Mq6aybA9
Knowledge Workers vs. Manual Workers
The concept of the knowledge economy was first used by Peter Drucker in his 1966 book "The Effective Executive." In this book, the difference between a knowledge worker and a manual worker was discussed. According to Drucker, the manual worker uses his hands and other physical capabilities to produce and provide services and other goods. On the other hand, a knowledge worker uses his head and produces knowledge, information and ideas that may be beneficial for the overall system of the business or that may be the key source in building the business in the first place.
Pod 1: Comparison- Global Citizenship
To me, the Oxfam’s definition would fit with my perspective of a global citizen. The definition of Global Citizen in the Financial Times website is saying people must be a professional to be a global citizen. That I do not agree at all. I mean being a global citizen means that you kind of know what is going on around the world, and respects and values diversity as a whole. This doesn’t mean any stereotyping of people, gender or race or religion. Yes there is whole thing of making the world a better place, but I think there is more to that than just making the world a better place or being someone influential. Being a global citizen is not to be ignorance to the surrounding around them and take responsibility for everything that they have done. Also, this has to been done without an ulterior motive but will good intention. (Easier said than done)
Financial time definition is more suited for big people in corporates and only thinking of making their authority and influence more noticeable to the world. Yes, they are doing the world a favour but I do think they are just thinking about how deep their pockets are and how much power they hold in this world.
From the reading, I like how she emphasis on Norwegian news media like more foreign news to make them feel more at home. I believe she is saying that media is only giving us normal people negative information rather than good positive information about Africa. Even in movies, the film people only use Africa for their scenery and nothing much about the African culture hence the masses do not really know about Africa. Is like we are being brainwashed by the media and I have to say this is true, the news media only give us C-stories like Crimes, Controversy, Crisis and Celebrity. If there is none of that, the news media won’t even bother and sometimes just find the most ridiculous thing to report.
Pod 1: Global Citizen Task 1
Reflecting on my word cloud, I tend to use the word Future. One is because of the topic name. Two, is because I’m actually think about my future seriously since I’m in university. After future the word that I tend to use would be work/jobs, cause after university, we will have to find some sort of work/job to sustain ourselves in this global society. Hence, after this course, I think I will know what I want to do later in life after I graduated from university.
This is one of my favourite scene from the Movie: Up in the Air.
It is really interesting as Bob got laid off but Ryan made feel better by telling him this inspirational line. I’m Impressed and this scene actually made me think about my dream and future and job more.
Way to go!!
Pod 1: Trigger question: What key themes and questions are emerging for you?
Key Themes: New Capitalism, Economic Globalisation, Relationship, Future workplace, Future, Workforce, People, Jobs, the World.
Questions: I wonder how the next 10 to 20 years jobs will be like and what the global economy will be like.
Pod 1 - Future of work - Up in the Air
To what extent do characters in the film display aspects of Sennett’s New Capitalism personality traits? Which characters are they? Why do they seem to display these characteristics? Genetics or environment?
Ryan Bingham – Delayering other people from their jobs. He is in some sense getting rid of layers within the organization as he acts as the hired company HR department as he is letting go employees from their jobs. He also in a way comfort the employees being let go by saying this “Anybody who ever built an empire, or changed the world, sat where you are now. And it’s because they sat there that they were able to do it.” This is my favourite line from the film. I think it’s probably the environment he is in and hence he shows these characteristics.
Alex Goran – Casualization in the relationship with Ryan. She met Ryan in a bar during one of their business trip. After some casual talking and drinks, they ended in casual sexual relationship. During their business trips. Ryan and Alex will always find time to meet up. But only till the end of the movie, the viewers only know that Alex was a married woman with kids and a husband. She even said that Ryan is an escape from her “real life”, saying that Ryan is a parenthesis. She displays these characteristics is because of her environment.
Natalie Keener – Non-linear sequencing in the company. She a brand new employee to the Ryan’s company and because she has a relationship commitment, she gave a solution to whole company flying around the country “problem”. She wanted to be more “settled” rather than traveling 322 days per year because of her relationship. She really does focus on problem-solving rather than fixed-function labour. She tried to change Ryan’s way of life and she indeed did an impact of Ryan’s life. So her characteristics is shown because of her way of life.
To what extent do you think the film explores aspects of Sennett’s argument about talent and uselessness?
What is Sennett’s view on talent and uselessness? Sennett sees the specter of uselessness as a major source of anxiety in society but is redefined by institutional change and shaped by distinctive forces: the global labour supply: when one’s skills are easily replaced by another labour force in another part of the world; automation and the management of ageing. To an extent, the movie actually does portrays some aspects of this as where the employees that were laid off were talking about younger people taking over their jobs and such. Also, the employees that were let go were showing uselessness to Ryan as their job is taken away from them.
What kind of business organisations are the target of this movie’s critique? Does this fit with those mentioned by Sennett?
I don’t think any business organisations are being targeted by this movie in any way in my opinion. The company in the movie, CTC, which Ryan and Natalie work for is presented as simply ‘doing their job’ or providing a service. If there is any critique, that will be directed at the companies who hired Ryan and Natalie’s Company to fire their staff rather than doing it themselves deeming them too cowardice.
What do you think about the values promoted by the movie? Is it romantic nonsense given the rise of New Capitalism and economic globalisation?
The value promoted by this movie is definitely about the importance of relationship over living solo and being married to your job. Be it family relationship or partner relationship, it always better to have someone you can count on rather than just focusing on your job and being a lone wolf. It is better to be with a special someone than rather living alone and having a lonely life with nobody to spend it with later in life when you have nothing else to do. The romantic-comedy part of the movie is good and it does promote the value of the movie. Given the rise of New Capitalism, the romantic part of the movie could be a nonsense to it as it doesn’t really relate to anything about new capitalism and economic globalization. But other part of the movie does portray the rise of new capitalism very clearly to the viewers.
