âIt wasnât obvious at all. Not to me, anyway.â Nell thought back to Mackyâs assumption about his reaction to the Palm Springs trip and the way Nic claimed that he âknew itâ as soon as she told him that Matt had liked her. Maybe it had been easy for her to ignore the obvious. Plausible deniability when there were questions about how close they were.
âI am happy,â she said with a nod but chose not to give the specific reason for her happiness. Not right after he had just kissed her and she was busy thinking about someone else who didnât bother showing up. âYouâre a good friend,â she reiterated with a bit of extra emphasis on the final word.
âI see that now.â One miscommunication after another, Matt couldnât help but think maybe the universe truly wanted them to stay as friends. Not that he had any expectations from Nell, he knew her situation with Nic (and yet he chose to kiss her but that was a story for another day), he just got out of a relationship as well. Once again the timing was wrong.
âI am glad.â He said with a smile, although he couldnât bring himself to ask why. Besides, itâs not like he didnât know, he just didnât feel ready to hear it yet. âSo are you.â Matt said in return, hoping Nell wouldnât change her mind once she got sober.
There was a strange satisfaction Mirella felt knowing that she could still press his buttons, knowing that after all these years she still had some sort of hold on him. Her eyes flashed with a hint of surprise at how easily his nickname for her rolled off his tongue. Something so simple, but it only felt right when he said it. They were falling into their old patterns, and she hadnât realized how much she missed that. âFine,â she finally relented, feigning disappointment that he had abruptly ended that conversation.
Mirella scoffed. When it came to whatever newest project she decided to work on, she had little experience, preferring to learn as she went. âYouâre only fooling yourself if you think you need a lot of experience. Just look at Lena Dunham. They gave her a show, and all she has is rich parents. You already have that and youâre actually talented.â All she knew of the play that he wrote was what he had told her, but she knew their relationship and his talent. There was little doubt that it wasnât good enough. âYou donât think our story is like that, do you? I think we deserve a little more credit than that. Personally, being compared to Scarlett Johansson is a travesty.â
âI liked the first season of Girls. It was good.â The characters were pretty similar to his friends, it was daring and different at that time, he appreciated it. âThen it got bad because Lena Dunhamâs narcissism took over.â Matthew actually met her in one of Laraâs parties, of course she was friends with other entitled Williamsburg hipsters with rich parents, Lara wasnât any different either. âNo, I donât. But I was talking about the whole genre.â Matt shrugged, eyes on the road. A short laugh escaped from his lips. âI just think people are tired of hearing those kinds of stories. Maybe I will write something better in the future.â He shrugged. âSomething less personal.â Hopefully something that wouldnât make him think about her, heâs already been doing that more than he was supposed to, far more than he would like to admit.
Mirella pulled up to the house, not a far distance from her own soon-to-be home. She had been expecting an invitation to Mattâs house eventually. Given their connection and his idealistic nature to continue being friends with his exes, it was inevitable. She the rang doorbell, feeling the suspense building, while also managing to get a full view of the exterior. He did always have good taste. Under normal circumstances, she would have opened the door herself and walked right in. But these werenât normal circumstances, and she had been trying â albeit very poorly â to respect his boundaries. As the door opened, she managed to catch a glimpse of the interior. Just a quick preview before the real show. âI come bearing no house-warming gift, but I figure my presence is a gift in itself.â @matthew-adamsâ
After two weeks later his shopping trip with Mirella, he broke up with his girlfriend. The break-up had nothing to do with his ex, it all started the fight they had on the set and things went downhill after that. He didnât tell anyone about his break-up, it wasnât a secret but he wasnât thrilled to talk about it either. Matthew wasnât ready to face the fact once again he sabotaged another relationship.Â
Excited (a little bit nervous), he ran to the door after hearing the doorbell and opened the door. The urge of wrapping his arms around her and pulling her into a tight hug was there (and it will always be there too) but Matt fought it. âYou didnât even bring a bottle of wine?â He teased her, stepping back so she could get inside. âI donât think I can let you in, Ella.â Matthew joked, letting out a chuckle.
Hollyâs nose wrinkled when Matt admitted that and they nodded their head. âThat really doesnât sound good,â they responded lightly. âI donât need you two ripping each other to shreds, okay? Thatâs really not going to help with the whole moving forward thing.â Once the fries were finished, they pushed the basket aside, wiping their hands on one of the napkins on the table. âIt is, isnât it?â
âI would never put you in a position like that.â He promised them with a smile. âHe was drunk. So was I. Water under the bridge.â Matt shrugged. âI already have a feud going on. I donât need another one.â He said, smile widened at their next words, agreed them with a slow nod.
âReally? You donât? How come you made this movie then?â Blunt and direct, that was Tyson, no matter who he was talking to. But Matt basically explained it in his next words anyway. âOh. I mean, how much media exposure do you need? I thought if youâre talented, youâll get any part you want, no? And you are so whereâs the sweat.âÂ
âBecause my agent convinced me it would help my career.â Linda wasnât wrong though, this shitty movie was probably the only reason Matt landed a part in a HBO show. âI wish it was as simple as that. Itâs not necessarily about the talent, producers donât give a shit, they just want actors who would bring people to theaters.â
âWell, usually things that are meant to be camp, arenât camp, and they are camp when they arenât supposed to be,â Tierney said, pausing for a second. âDid that make sense?â she shrugged up her shoulders, taking another sip from her hand. âI mean, you did a good job, even if the movie wasnât good. We all have to work on things that we arenât proud of sometimes, right? For our careers and shit.âÂ
âIt absolutely did. I would explain how it did but I am too drunk to articulate.â He chuckled. âThanks for that.â Although Matt didnât really think he did a good job, decent maybe but definitely not good. âYeah thatâs the whole thing. You need to put up with the shit you donât like because it might be good for your career.â He had to admit though, Heathers helped him to get more offers and recognition.
Stevie laughed, appreciating the self-deprecating humor.
âWhat? Not crazy enough for you?â she teased as she shook her head. âIâm glad youâre not fully a prude, but see I feel like youâre proud to add porn star to your list.âÂ
âWho do you think I am?â He chuckled at her, shoulders shrugged. âI am definitely not a prude. I wouldnât say I am proud. But it was an interesting experience because first of all; sheâs far more experienced than me and obviously sheâs great at what she is doing.â Otherwise why would people watch her perform? âItâs kinda nerve wrecking. I was trying to tell whether she was acting or not.â
âIt still surprises me that we havenât,â said Ben with a slight shake of his head. âEspecially when we were younger. One day, though, one day. Maybe weâll form some kind of duo when weâre older, like Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart.â it was an interesting thought, to be honest, where theyâd be in twenty years time. He hoped heâd be back into movies by then, but heâd found himself wary after everything that had happened before prison. âOkay okay. Supportive.â A chuckle escaped and he glanced to Simba a moment. âGive it a week and Iâll be freaking out.â
âWe will make it happen someday.â Matt wanted to go back to theatre eventually. What would be better than being in a play with a close friend? âWe donât need to wait that long.â He told him, he hoped by that time they already starred in too many projects together. Chuckling, he nodded his head. âJust give me a call then and I will calm you down.â
