Without any further additions or hesitation, a knock sounded against Matt’s window. Dex was perched on the fire escape, relaxed, waiting with a grin for the devil to let him in.

Matt moved to the window, a slightly amused huff escaping his lips. He unlocked it and slid it open.

"You know, doors are pretty useful."

Natasha Romanoff had a dark past.

There was no denying it. From spending her growing up years in the Red Room to working with the KGB, her life has been less than perfect. At the age of nineteen, she had “graduated” from the Red Room, and with that came her new mission in life: getting revenge for her captors enemies. She had gone through hell and back to get where she was today.

But there were good moments in her past, too. Getting out of the KGB. Joining SHIELD. Making a difference for good. And Matthew Murdock.

Her history with him was long and a little complicated. Matt had been her lawyer in a trial case for a murder she didn’t commit. They had dated on and off for a while, and were pretty serious about each other. Or so Natasha had thought. But she was so young back then. And happy.

Now, though, she worked for SHIELD. No more false murder cases and no need for a personal lawyer. And although she missed Matt and their time spent together, her work served as an excellent distraction.

Currently, she was out grocery shopping. Even SHIELD agents and Avengers need a stocked refrigerator. She wore a pair of dark sunglasses and had her hair pulled back in the hopes that no one would recognize her.

But she recognized him. Matt. Even with his back to her, she knew it was him. She hesitated, then took a step towards him. “Matt?” She wasn’t sure if he remembered her voice, so she added, “It’s Natasha.” Just to be sure he recognized her.

Matt stopped and turned in her general direction, a smile growing on his face. "Natasha! Wow it's been a long time. I'd say you've been keeping out of trouble now that your in my office less, though I do miss my best client."

The charm was still all the same. Matt stepped closer to her, cocking his head to the side and listening to her heartbeat. She seemed lighter — happier, and it made his the edges of his smile rise a bit more.

“The company I work for has to deal with my trouble now.”, She responded playfully, enjoying the lighthearted banter. When he stepped closer and cocked his head, she knew he was reading her heartbeat. “You look good, Matt. How’s my favorite lawyer doing?”

He offered a bashful smile at the question, his hand coming up to rub the back of his neck.

"I've been better, but I think I could say that most days. I've significantly improved bumping into you." His soft smile flickered to a charming smirk.

"Do you want to go out for coffee? Might be nice to catch up."

”Oh? Well, I’m glad I could make your day better.”, She replied with a smile. Her eyes lit up at the idea of going out for coffee with him. “I’d like that very much. Do you have time now?” She could finish the rest of her shopping list later.

"Absloutely, yes." He softened his smile. "No rush. If you need to finish shopping I'm happy to walk with you." He reached out his hand and took her arm. His hands, despite being calloused and large, were gentle around her upper arm.

He held his cane in his other hand. "I'd say id help you look but..." The corners of his mouth ticked up just a little further.

Natasha glanced down at her list. “I do have a couple more things to get.” She smiled when he took her arm, remembering how gentle his touch could be.

“Just peanut butter and milk. And Oreos. I promise I’m a healthy eater.” She tucked the list into her pocket and picked up her shopping basket. “You could probably hear the food if you listened hard enough.”, She teased. “Although if I remember correctly, sight and hearing weren’t necessary when we were together. Only touch.”

There was a moment where Matt's eyebrows raised and he almost stuttered. Hsi mouth opened just to close again. He ticked his head to the side and let out a soft chuckle.

"Ah. You must be Jeff." He smiled. He reaches his hand down and offers to pet him.

As a soft *woosh* filled the street, Matt heard it, approaching carefully as he always did.

His head cocked to the side ever so slightly to listen.

"- coordinates were a little off but the apartment is up there."

"One light is on, approach quietly. He's in there but so is she. If she's a problem prune her. She's to strong for us to fight."

That was all Matt needed. His billyclub flew through the air and hit one of the TVA agents in the temple, knocking him out cold. The sound echoed up the buildings.

The wind scraping along the rooftop tugged her attention toward the window. She already knew they were there. Knew the moment had ripened, heavy and inevitable, ready to break. And Nadja was ready.

She turned the jazz up louder, letting it spill from the record player like a veil over the room, then wrapped the training bandages tight around her forearms, carefully, hiding the dark, spiraling scars beneath.

Footsteps. Then a sharp, slicing hiss. A portal opening.

She moved closer to the window. Silence followed, thin and stretched before a heavy thud arrived seconds later like an aftershock.

Nadja flinched, her gaze snapping upward toward the ceiling. Strained sounds drifted down. More than one voice. Men struggling. And then a breath, unmistakably his.

Matt.

She didn’t hesitate. The window flew open, and in one fluid, feline motion, she slipped out, catching the fire escape ladder and climbing fast toward the roof.

He heard her coming, a small smirk on his face. Of course she came up.

He was fighting still, breathless as he dished out blows with his billy clubs.

"Nice to see you again Naddie." He grinned as he elbowed one of the TVA agents in the face. A soft grunt escaped his mouth on impact. "I see you've made friends."

Matt could hear Nadja’s subtle, feline footsteps, landing from a leap right in the middle of the fight.

“Hi, Matty. You know very well I make friends everywhere,” she replied with sarcasm, huffing lightly. One of the TVA agents grabbed her from behind, trying to choke her with the time-stick. Nadja caught his wrist and twisted it with little effort, making the agent cry out in pain.

She moved on to the second agent, who was about to disintegrate Matt from behind. With a kick to the ribs and a spin through the air, she sent him flying over the block. Nadja let out a quiet sigh.

“For time agents, you’re very poorly trained.”

Mat heard the sickening crunch of the agents wrist and it caused him to smirk as he yanked another agents head down and knees him in the face.

"Clearly..", He landed another punch, "You had a good teacher." He grinned.

He tilted his head to hear heart rate was calm.

Nadja turned back with only part of her body and drove an elbow into the throat of the last remaining TVA agent.

She looked around, seeing them all sprawled out on the ground, and let out a sigh.

“I was actually afraid I might’ve forgotten my training, master.” She smirked and glanced over at Matt, who was panting from the effort. She stepped closer to him, her heart starting to beat faster and more unevenly.

“It’s a long story… everything that happened here.” She gestured toward the unconscious agents. “I can explain over a drink, if you will..Like the old times.” Her voice was softer on the last part, unsure if he’d accept.

"you don't have to ask me twice, Naddie." he smiled. "Some whiskey might also help with the bruises ribs."

He offered his arm with a cheeky grin. "Mind helping a blind man?"

“Come on, blind man. Let’s heal your wounds.”

After they climbed down the fire escape, they stopped in front of the bar, now almost empty. It was 1 am and Josie was just finishing her shift. With a faint jingle of the doorbell, Josie glanced up as she wiped a glass, then scoffed.

“Oh no, not tonight, kids. I’m just about to head home—”

Before she could finish, Nadja, in a honeyed voice and with a puppy-eyed look, slipped into a seat at the table. “Come on, Josie… don’t you think we could really use a bandage? For the soul, especially.” She gestured between herself and Matt, grinning and winking.

They both looked a little worn out and disheveled after the earlier fight.
