PART SIX:
âWhat do you wantâŠâ Brendan sighed, returning his head to his hands.
âDude, whatâs up with you? Youâre never like this, I donât understand.â Quinn whispered, sitting beside Brendan and placing a comforting hand on his back.
âI just⊠I thought I was ready to see her again, I mean 3 years is a long time and⊠never mind.â He said, shaking his head.
Quinn just sat beside his friend, a confused look on his face as he tried to decipher the vague admission. He ran several scenarios through his head unable to comprehend the real reason for his behavior. It had never occurred to Quinn that someone would disregard their strict rules when it came to Phoebe. Before every teammate met her they were warned away and threatened with almost certain death (banishment from the Hughes household). Now that they were all adults, the rules had become more lenient, a testament to the trust in their friends.Â
âI just donât understand you Brendan. You guys were so close, and then⊠nothing.â Quinn said, standing up and walking toward the door.
âI know, I mean I donât, not really. I just, I need a minute to think is all.â He said, leaning back on the couch, a tear falling from his left eye, a poetic reminder of the pain heâd caused for both Phoebe and himself.
âYou know Iâm here whenever you need anything.â Quinn reminded him softly, resigning himself to return to the ever-louder festivities outside.
â
âYOU CANâT DO THAT!!!â Phoebe yelled, crossing around the table and tackling her youngest brother.
âGET OFF OF ME!??!â He screeched, batting his arms at her as if she were a wild animal attacking him.
Jack and Matty burst into laughter watching Phoebe take Luke to the ground. Luke had been slowly replacing cups when he felt the other team wasnât looking, and Phoebe had caught him almost immediately.
âOh my god! I leave for a second?!?! What happened???â Quinn sighed, walking through the sliding door.
âLuke cheated! He violated the sanctity of this sport!â Phoebe yelled, her arms in a loose, but secure, chokehold around Lukeâs neck.
âLuke?â Quinn asked, clearly disappointed in his younger brother.
âWell I mean⊠Having Matty AND Phoebe together was basically cheating anyway I mean they literally havenât missed a single shot?? How is that fair?â He pouted, knocking Phoebe off his back, and standing up.
âYou guys are such children!â He responded, picking up the cups that had spilled during the commotion.
They all laughed as they cleaned up the spilled beer, stacking the cups for a later date. Matty and Phoebe had found themselves reaching for the same cup, laughing as their hands brushed.Â
âHey guysâŠâ Brendan said, stepping onto the porch, effectively ruining the moment.
âBrendan.â Phoebe said curtly, a frown on her face.
âIâm sorry, I just⊠I really donât know what came over meâŠâ He sighed, dropping his heads into his hands once again.
âI- Itâs fine Brendan, I know you didnât mean anythingâŠâ Phoebe sighed, resigning herself to her ever-repeating fate. A life of chasing the man she knew she could never have, one sheâd thought sheâd left behind when sheâd been with Matty. A faint glimmer of a different path, obscured by the leaves of a past love.
âPhoebe, why donât we go inside and grab some hot chocolate, itâs getting kinda cold.â Matty said, placing a hand on her back as he steered her past Brendan and into the safety of the kitchen.
Matty began preparing the hot chocolate, asking Phoebe about school and life and the future. She felt herself opening up to him, her past with Brendan a distant memory with Mattyâs presence. She was confused. Confused as to how she could feel so strongly about a man sheâd just met. Confused as to why she still wanted Brendan, despite her earlier realization.
Matty finished the hot chocolate, taking a sip of his own as he offered Phoebe a mug. She grabbed the mug, wrapping her hands around the warmth.Â
âWhy donât we watch a movie on the couch?â Phoebe asked, grabbing Mattyâs hand and leading him to the living room, a gentle smile painting her face.
âJacksonâ He said suddenly, a blush creeping onto his face as he sat beside Phoebe.
âHuh?â She asked, confused about his random comment.
âMy middle name, itâs not Ingrid, itâs Jackson.âÂ
âOh. I like that! Thanks for telling me.â She smiled, grabbing a blanket and draping it over them.
Even though his middle name was far from a secret, Matty found himself entranced by her thanks. She made it seem as if heâd shared a piece of himself with her, one she was proud to keep.

PART FIVE:
Phoebe leaned into the boy next to her as she finally began the long process of coming to terms with unsaid emotions. Every missed call and tear spilt filled her mind and she began to cry again. Matty had shown her more kindness than Brendan ever had. In that moment she realized something that even yesterday sheâd have been surprised about. She didnât need Brendan to live. Yeah, she missed him sometimes, but sheâd made something of herself. Sheâd made friends, long-lasting connections she never wouldâve dreamed of in high school.
Everything Brendan had done to her had led her to this point,
a 19 year old proud of who she was becoming.
After a few minutes, Phoebe pulled herself back together, Matty having sat with his hands on hers the entire time. He had sat and listened to her half-hearted tears, his heart breaking with each earth-shattering sob. Although they had only just met, there was something magnetizing about their connection. A jolt of something connecting them as Matty held her close.
âMats.â She said, turning to look into his brown eyes.
âPhoebe?â His intense gaze filled with desire.
Phoebeâs gaze flicked to the boyâs lips and darted back up quickly, a sultry action with almost certain consequences.
Mattyâs gaze darkened as he tracked the girl in front of him, a smirk forming on his lips. He found his mind wandering as he moved his hand to hold her cheek, angling her face to reflect his. Her eyes found his as he began to lean forward, an electric current pulling them towards each other. Matty felt his eyes fluttering closed.
âMatthew Inrid Beniers, get your ass out here for beer pong we need a fourth!â Luke called from the deck, easing the tension and ruining the moment.
âIngrid?â Phoebe asked, leaning back laughing.
âThatâs not even my middle name, I donât-â He started, opening his eyes.
âSureâŠâ She said, standing up and opening the door.
âHey, I mean if you wanna stay here tonight you can, I know itâs hard with Brendan right now.â He said, looking up at her with a sweet smile.
âI might just take you up on that Beniers.â She said, heading out the door.
Matty found himself hoping that sheâd accept his offer. He wandered toward the deck, leaning against the doorframe as he took in the screen unfolding in front of him. Luke and Jack were filling up cups, and Quinn was laughing from behind them as it was clear they were struggling.
âDude, I think the beerâs supposed to go IN the cup.â Quinn said, doubling over in laughter.
âThanks for the help Quintin.â Jack snarked, wiping his beer covered hands on his shirt.
âYeah itâs not our fault someone shook the cans.â Luke added, shaking his head as he grabbed another can.
âNeed help?â Matty asked, walking over to them.
âYeah, thanks Matty.â Jack said, handing him a beer.
The three of them struggled to keep the beers from exploding as they tried to pour them into cups.
âSeriously, how many of you does it take to pour a couple beers?â Phoebe asked, wandering onto the deck in a small black bikini.
âWoah.â Matty said, not hiding the fact that he was checking her out.
âWoah now loverboy thatâs our sister.â Luke said, crossing his arms.
âRelax Luke, I know I look good.â Phoebe smirked, wandering over and grabbing a can.
Of course the can she grabbed didnât explode as she easily poured it into two cups. She grabbed another, gently opening it and pouring it into several more cups. It took her a total of three minutes to fill the remaining six cups.
âThat wasnât so hard now was it?â She said, standing back and allowing the boys to set up the table.
âWitch!â Jack yelled, pointing to her and laughing.
Phoebe laughed, her face brightening for the first time since Brendanâs temper tantrum. Matty found himself grateful that Luke had invited him, instead of letting him wallow at home alone. His family had opted to do a big vacation across Europe but Matty was tired of constant traveling and wanted nothing more than to stay in one place for a few months. When heâd told Luke about his depressing summer plans, he had immediately suggested that Matty come stay with them for a little bit, hoping to add a little fun into his summer. What Luke had forgotten to mention, however, was that his beautiful younger sister was staying at the house as well. Matty had known that the Hughes brothers had a sister, but the way they spoke about her made him think she was a lot younger than Luke, not just a year behind in school.
âOkay letâs do this!â Luke called, pulling Matty from his thoughts as he finished placing the cups on the table.
âHell yeah!â Jack said, taking his place next to his younger brother.
âOkay second team, Pheebs you in?â Quinn asked, laughing at his sisterâs reluctance.
âNah you guys play, Iâll watch.â She said, stepping back.
âOh no way Hughes, youâre on my team.â Matty called, grabbing her arm to bring her closer to the table.
âFine⊠But what about Quinn?â Phoebe said, gesturing to her oldest brother.
âI think Iâm gonna check on Briss, I havenât ever seen him like this.â Quinn said, stepping back into the house.
Quinn had always been in tune with emotions, and after growing up with Brendan, he knew when something was really wrong.
Cheers filled Brendanâs ears as he wallowed in Phoebeâs room. The decorated room doing nothing to help his emotions, her evident personality suffocating him. His eyes wandered back to the sunflower, a poetic reminder of his mistakes. He was dumb and 18 and he thought he would rule the world⊠Little did he know at the time that Phoebe was his world.
âBriss. Hey buddyâŠâ Quinn said, stepping into the room and gently making his way over to his friend.

PART FOUR:
âWhatâs up with him?â Luke said, having witnessed the tail end of Brendanâs episode.Â
âDonât bother with him,â Phoebe snarked, pulling her hair out of the way, âheâs always like this.â
âHeâs really not.â Matty said, backing up one of his oldest friends.
âYeah, Iâve never seen him like that.â Jack said, returning from the living room.
âI donât know guys, he's weirdly possessive with me, always has been.â She shrugged, taking a sip of her tea.
âWhy didnât you say anything?â Jack asked, concerned.
âI just thought he was like that, I never really thought anything was off.âÂ
âYou deserve better.â Matty said, shaking his head and walking towards the door Brendan had previously slammed.Â
âYou really donât have to say anything Mats, Iâll deal. I always have.â She shrugged, placing her now empty mug into the sink.
âMats?â Matty said, slowly opening the door.
âOh. Sorry I mean um Matty.âÂ
âI like Mats.â He said, walking into Phoebeâs room.
Phoebeâs room was exactly how Matty pictured it even from their brief interactions. He scanned the room taking in the beautiful murals and the clothes strewn everywhere. His eyes found Brendan standing in front of a beautiful sunflower drawn upon the wall. He slowly approached his friend and laid a comforting hand on his shoulder.
âGo away Matty. Shouldnât you be with your new girlfriend or something.â Brendan yelled, dropping his hand from the wall as he turned to face Matty.
âDude, I just met her. What the fuck is up with you? Sheâs just a girl and sheâs allowed to talk to other people.âÂ
Matty was shocked. In all their years of friendship, Brendan had never once raised his voice at him, let alone insult him.Â
âSheâs not just a girl. Sheâs brilliant and beautiful and the sun pales in comparison to her smile. Music sounds like nothing compared to her laugh.â Brendan shouted, causing Matty to back up.
âLook I donât disagree, but the girl I saw out there was hurt by your actions Brendan.â Matty sneered, âshe deserves so much better than your jealousy.â
Matty left the room after that leaving Brendan to wallow in thoughts about how he hurt you, even unintentionally. He hadnât meant to snap, he really hadnât, it was just too much hearing her flirting with another guy. Mattyâs words replayed in his head as he laid back on the couch.Â
âShe deserves so much better than your jealousy.â
Brendan couldnât say anything to that, heâd been frozen since that moment. Unsure what to do, he found himself reflecting on their relationship. He reflected on every night heâd promised to meet but canceled at the last minute, the way heâd chosen school over her well-being, the way heâd left her when she needed him most. Matty was right. He didnât deserve her. He never had. Every call heâd left unanswered filtered back through his mind.Â
Why hadnât he put effort in when heâd had her?
He was angry. Angry with his past self for neglecting the best part of his life. Angry at himself now for only recently realizing all heâd lost. Angry at Matty for calling him out. Angry at Phoebe for putting up with him for so long.Â
She shouldâve left him after the first time heâd stood her up, but sheâd stayed. Sheâd stayed when heâd yell at her for faults that werenât hers. She stood by him when heâd been accepted to Michigan and drafted into the NHL. Sheâd held him while heâd cried over his childhood dog. She was so much better than him. She deserved a man like Matty with his life together. A stable job in the NHL, the Calder trophy winner. Not some guy whoâd left Michigan at the same time, never having made the leap to the NHL, stuck in a perpetual loop of poorly played AHL hockey.
Brendan was pulled from the never-ending cycle when he heard the door open. Phoebe walked in, making her way over to where Brendan was laying.
âLook Pheebs, Iâm sorry. I donât know what came over me. You deserve so much more than me.â He rushed out, sitting up to face her.
âI- Youâve never apologized to me for anything. What did Matty even say?âÂ
âI know, and I shouldâve apologized back when we were together. I never shouldâve stood you up, I never should have left.â He said, his shoulders sagging as he went to put his head in his hands.
âYou shouldnât have. You left me, alone. Luke was away that year, Brendan. I had no one.â Phoebe said, tears welling in her eyes.
âI know. Just⊠Long distance never works and I- I couldnât lose you. Not that way.âÂ
âBrendan. You did lose me. You lost me even before breaking up with me. I didnât know it then but life without you has opened my eyes to how you treated me. I deserved better. Hell, I deserve better now. You donât get to waltz in here 3 years later and say itâs all fine or act like you have me. Brendan I donât think you ever truly had me.â
âI- Iâm sorry Phoebe. I really am.â Brendan whispered as tears fell from his eyes.
âYou should be.â Phoebe said, standing up and walking back to the kitchen, wiping her eyes along the way.
When she entered the kitchen, Matty immediately stood up and wrapped her into a hug. Phoebe collapsed into his arms, letting the tears sheâd held fall.
âPhoebe, Iâm here. Iâm here.â Matty said, holding her tightly and rubbing her back.
He led her to his room, sitting with her on the bed, waiting until she was ready to talk. He held her, letting her cry and whispering comfort for around ten minutes until she was calm enough to speak.
âLook, Phoebe. I donât know what happened between you and Brendan. I donât want to overstep, but you deserve so so so much better.â He said when he felt her pull away.
âI know. I mean I know now. I thought he was perfect for so long Mats. I thought⊠I donât know what I thought would happen between us. I just⊠I-â She said, smiling sadly as she lost herself in thought.

LEOâS POV:
The drive home from the arena was silent as Leo and Pavel tried to process their third consecutive loss. They had known going into the season that joining the team that had finished 32nd in a 32 team league would be hard, they just werenât ready for the mental challenges that came along with the losing. Leoâs phone rang as he merged onto the highway.Â
âHey Leo, I saw the loss, Iâm already at your place. I brought cookies!â Y/n said as soon as Leo pressed accept.
âThanks love, I have Pavel with me tonight, so youâll finally meet him.â Leo replied, smiling to himself. He loved how Y/n always knew exactly how he was feeling and what he needed without even having to be there.
âHey Pavel! I have chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies so I hope you like those. I also think thereâs ice cream in the freezer from the last time I was over.â She said, wandering through the apartment and rifling through the freezer.
âOatmeal sounds great, thank you Y/n. I canât wait.â He replied smiling.
âFound it!â Y/n called, the sound of the freezer slamming closed echoing through the speaker.
âBe careful with my fridge!â Leo said, turning off of the freeway.
âItâs fine!â Y/n said laughing.
âOkay sure, weâll be home in 10 minutes. Please try not to break any of my appliances.âÂ
âBye Leo! See you in a bit!â
âBye!â Leo hung up the phone.
Leo had spent the past few months trying to avoid Y/n and Pavel meeting. Itâs not that he didnât think theyâd get along, it was the exact opposite. Leo felt theyâd get along too well and his small, eensy little crush would be cast aside in favor of letting her be happy.
When they arrived at the apartment, Leo quickly hopped out of the car, running to the elevators to see Y/n.
PAVELâS POV:
Pavel couldnât fully understand Leoâs haste as he was pretty sure theyâd seen each other the day before, but he quickly followed Leo into the elevator.
âY/n weâre here!â Leo called, knocking on his own door.
The door opened and Pavel swore he felt his heart skip a beat. The girl in front of him was the most beautiful person he had ever seen. Her brown hair cascaded around her face perfectly complimenting her eyes. Her smile made her entire face light up and Pavel wanted to have her smile tattooed on his eyelids so heâd never forget it.
âLeo, hi!â She said, smiling as he scooped her into a big hug.
âHi love.â He laughed, setting her down.
âYou must be Pavel.â She said, turning her smile to him. Pavel couldnât figure out how he hadnât passed out right then and there.Â
âIâm- uh- Pavel, yeah.â He said, offering a hand as the tips of his ears turned an aggressive shade of pink.
âI just said that, Iâm Y/n.â She laughed, taking his hand and giving it a quick shake.
âWell! Letâs get down to business. I could only find vanilla ice cream though I was sure Iâd left chocolate unless Leo ate it all within the past day and a half.â She said, turning to him and frowning.
âI got hungry.â Was all he said, holding his hands up in mock defense.
The night went smoothly from there, Pavel and Y/n sharing the occasional glance as Leo turned on a movie. The movie began and Y/n was sandwiched between the boys, not that she would have complained or anything. Before long, Leo was drifting to sleep, the exerted energy from the game having caught up with him.Â
âHey, Y/n.â Pavel whispered, angling his body towards her.
âHey Pavel.â She replied, echoing his movements.
âI- I think youâre the most beautiful girl Iâve ever seen. And I- I just- I wanted to ask for your number I guess? I mean you donât have to- I know how close you are with Leo and I donât want to interfere or anything.â He said, rambling.Â
The entire night heâd been trying to figure out how to ask her out, but this seemed like the best time to do it.
âPavel, I would love to give you my number. I think youâre really attractive too. Leo and I are just friends, heâs made that clear.â She said, grabbing his phone and adding her number.
Months passed and their relationship blossomed. Pavelâs every waking thought was consumed by the girl he loved. The two of them had made it official a few weeks after theyâd started hanging out and told everyone a few weeks after that. Leo had pulled away from Pavel a little bit, but from what he could tell, he and Y/n were still close.
LEOâS POV:
He knew this would happen. He knew Y/n and Pavel were perfect for eachother. But, he still felt he would make a better boyfriend to Y/n. Pavel and Y/n had just met and Leo knew everything about her. He didnât even understand her jokes like he did, his english isn't as strong.Â
Leo found himself caught up in a loop, thinking about everything Pavel did that he could do better. Heâd walk through the street with Y/n before practice, thinking how easy it would be to just turn and tell her how he felt. Seeing her smile was his favorite part of each day and he couldnât bear to lose it.Â
He knew he shouldnât blame Pavel. Pavel was a leading contender for the Calder trophy and he seemed to have his whole life together, 20 years old with his own house, whilst Leo was 19 and renting an apartment from his fatherâs friend. Pavel had the charm Leo would never have. He was the star of the team and Leo was cast aside, his injury leaving him forgotten in the midst of the Ducks winning streak.Â
âHey Leo- Can I- Can I stay at your place tonight?â Y/n called him out of the blue.
âYeah of course, we can talk about it when you get here.âÂ
She had clearly been crying, her sentences broken as she tried to communicate with her best friend. Leo almost cried himself when he opened the door to see the tear-stained face of the only person in the world who could make him feel better.
âWhat happened, love?â He asked, holding out his arms and wrapping the smaller girl into his arms.
âPavel. He and I had a fight. He wants me to move in-â She said, sobbing into Leoâs shoulder.
âThat canât be everything, love thereâs something youâre not telling me.â He held her tight, rubbing her back as she cried.
âHe wants⊠He wants to get married. I mean I know itâs fast and I really love him but marriage? I mean Iâm 19 for christâs sake and I want to move in with him, I told him as much. But he wants more, heâs ready for more.âÂ
Leo didnât know what to say. She was right, marriage at 19 was crazy and with his own unresolved feelings there was no way heâd be able to communicate anything useful.
âYouâre gonna be okay. Iâm here, Iâm not going anywhere.â He said, holding her tight.
After a little while Y/n pulled away, rubbing her eyes.Â
âThank you for being here Leo. I think I should probably go back home to see him. I kind of just stormed off and I donât want to lose him. We need to have a proper conversation. I love you Leo, thank you so much.â She said, walking towards the door.

Don't You (Taylor's Version) (From the Vault)
â¶ïž âąáá||á|á||||áâââââá|âą 0:10
Cole Caufield had a thing for his best friend and everyone knew, except him. Whether it was a passing comment from teammates in the locker room or a bump to the shoulder when she walked by, Coleâs friends were anything but subtle. Despite the knowing glances his way, Y/n remained oblivious to her best friendâs teammates.Â
The moment Cole realized how he felt, heâd been on the phone with Y/n listening to her ramble on about the differences between movie adaptations of the books she loved and the books themselves. He found himself lost in her voice, smiling at the passion she felt for her stories. Y/n had asked if he was even still listening, laughing about her tangent.
God, that laugh.Â
He wanted to hear that laugh forever. It was the best sound heâd ever heard, the way her face lit up on facetime as she laughed at his clear indication that he had no idea what sheâd been talking about. He heard what she was saying, he wasnât not listening, he was just preoccupied. Preoccupied by the freckles on her face, the way being the reason she smiled made his days. Heâd come to the conclusion that something must be wrong with him, and heâd called the only person he thought of, Jack Hughes.
The call had gone something along the lines of Cole telling Jack he thought he liked her and Jack saying âduhâ and hanging up. The call really didnât clear anything up for him, if anything it raised more questions about when heâd started feeling this way. The next day at practice his mind wandered and he found himself skating laps to make up for it at the end of practice. He promised his coach and his teammates that it was a one time thing, but thoughts of Y/n clouded his mind when he was on the ice, leading to sloppy line changes and missed passes. His teammates, understandably, began to worry but he maintained that nothing was wrong.
Y/n had noticed something was wrong as well when heâd started pulling away from her, canceling plans last minute and creating half-assed excuses for his absences. Sheâd called his teammates, his friends, hell even his coach to see what was up with him and no one had any idea. Weeks passed and Y/n began to accept that sheâd lost her closest friend. She stopped reaching out, and he never even tried.
By the end of the season, Cole Caufield had the lowest number of goals in his draft year. Without daily phone calls and the promise of seeing Y/nâs smile in the crowd, his game had fallen flat and he was widely considered as the biggest draft bust of the twenty-first century. He didnât really care about his game, he cared that heâd lost Y/n in an effort to avoid exactly that. Heâd thought that pulling away from her would help him manage his feelings, but it just made everything worse. When sheâd stopped reaching out, heâd found it impossible to break the silence, opting to late nights out and unhealthy habits.Â
During the offseason, Cole found himself spending late nights at clubs, partying until he couldnât remember his own name. On one of these nights heâd taken his phone out and called Y/n, leaving a message about how much he wanted her and how he couldnât risk losing her. The message was obscured by his slurred speech and the noise of the club.Â
The next morning Cole had woken up with a pounding headache and three missed calls from Y/n. He hadnât really remembered what heâd said the night before, but he hastily listened to her messages, trying to piece the night before back together.
âHey Cole, look you really hurt me when you pulled away a few months ago. I really canât have you calling me shit-faced at three am with promises we both know you wonât keep.â
âCole, itâs me again, I was kind of rude before, just let me know if you get home safe, yeah?â
âCole⊠I loved you. But you really hurt me. I- I just want to know youâre okay, so call me, yeah?â
Cole called Y/n for the first time in months and they talked. They talked for hours about everything Cole had been going through, the way he felt he couldnât reach out once itâd been a few weeks. Y/n shared what it was like to have radio-silence from someone she loved, how her life had changed, how sheâd found someone who truly saw her. The bond that was once there would never really be what it used to, but they were getting closer. Cole really didnât want to lose her again, and if it meant hiding how he truly felt, well, heâd just have to deal with it. She was everything heâd ever wanted and heâd have to live with stolen glances with hidden meanings.
summary: Loosely inspired by Taylor Swift's song of the same name, this story follows Devils captain Nico Hischier as he navigates his overwhelming crush on Jack Hughes as the team tries to plan a New Year's Eve party.

Throwing this yearâs New Yearâs Eve party was proving to be a bigger challenge than Nico Hischier was anticipating. Since he became captain, it was always on him to plan events and bring the team together outside of work. Despite this responsibility, he somehow always managed to avoid hosting events, opting to let the wags get together and plan something extravagant on his dime. This year, however, the wags decided to let the team plan it, probably for their own amusement as the men finally realized how much work actually goes into organizing events.Â
Nico and Jack took it upon themselves to delve out responsibilities, assigning each player a different job. Jonas and John were assigned music which turned out to be very simple as John had just bought a new speaker. The two of them just had to make a playlist for the night. Erik and Luke worked together to figure out decorations, sending Simon, Curtis, Nate, and Jesper to pick them up from various stores. Alex, Mikey, Timo, and Dawson were in charge of catering and food, which meant they spent the next several weeks eating from every restaurant in the greater metropolitan area. The goalies: Vitek, Akira, and Nico, were in charge of the photo wall. Everyone else was expected to show up four hours early on the night of the party to set everything up.Â
The day of the party came around, and everyone gathered in Nicoâs apartment to decorate. All furniture was moved out of the main room, stacked haphazardly in Nicoâs guest room. All was going smoothly, the speaker was working and the food was on the tables, until Luke and Erik started arguing over which decorations went where. Luke wanted the fairylights over the dance floor horizontally, whilst Erik wanted them around the entire room. Nico had to step in and offer a compromise with half of them over the dance floor and the other half on two of the four walls.Â
By the time they finished setting everything up, there was thirty minutes left before everyone else showed up. Some of the guys went home to get ready with their partners and others hung around, grabbing a beer from the fridge and congratulating each other on their respective roles in the set up. The room looked surprisingly well put together. Black table cloths covered the counter and kitchen tables, food and champagne flutes resting on them. The walls were covered in lights, perfectly illuminating the room. The goalies had done an excellent job with the photo wall, black fabric cascaded down from the ceiling, giant golden 2024 balloons floating in front. The table beside it held props and the polaroid camera, perfect for the night ahead of them.Â
Nico was overwhelmed by the whole process, his home now unrecognizable. He was grateful for Jackâs help in setting everything up and being there for him without him having to even ask.Â
âHey Jack, thank you. You really didnât have to help me organize all of this.â He said, turning to face him.
âYou wouldâve done the same.â Jack replied simply, taking a sip of his beer and wrapping an arm around Nico.Â
Nico blushed as he felt the weight of Jackâs arm on his shoulders. The captainâs crush on his alternate only deepened during the planning process. Every call to check in on the planning only reminded him how much he adored Jack.Â
The music started up again as everyone flooded into the apartment. Music flooded Nicoâs mind as he received compliments from his guests for the decorations. As the night wore on and as Nico progressed quickly through glasses of champagne, he found himself clinging to his alternate. His mind was foggy with thoughts of Jack. Memories of them on the ice filtered through his mind as he stood slightly too close to his teammate.Â
âJacky, âdonât ever become a stranger whoâs laugh I could recognize anywhere.â I donât know what Iâd do without you.â Nico whispered, his hands on either side of the smaller manâs face.Â
âIâm not going anywhere buddy, donât worry.â Jack said, trying to reassure his captain.
Nico looked into Jackâs eyes, searching for a promise of something more, something Jack could never give.Â
âLetâs go to the photo booth, yeah? Then weâll never be apart!â Jack said, moving Nicoâs hands from his face.
Jack grabbed his hand pulling him across the room, his face flush from the alcohol. As Jack expertly weaved through the dance floor, Nico became distracted by the hand clutching his. He found himself wanting more once again, worrying about what would happen if he ever shared his thoughts.
âOndrej! My man! Can you take a few polaroids of me and Hisch? Thanks!â Jack said, going through the props on the table and handing Nico a plastic crown which matched the tiara he was now wearing.
âYou first, princess.â Nico said, teasing Jack and allowing him to lead him in front of the photo wall.Â
Jack flushed at the nickname and Nico made a mental note to call him that again. The first photo was of them with their arms around each other, smiling at the camera. As the first photo printed, Jack and Nico planned their next one.
âI got it! Bend down a little, yeah?â Jack said, leaning in to kiss Nico on the cheek.Â
Ondrej quickly took the picture, laughing at the extra flush in Nicoâs cheeks and ears.Â
âOne more, yeah guys?â Ondrej asked, placing the second polaroid on the table.Â
âMhm, Nico you pick!â Jack smiled, making Nico flush again.
âLetâs do the party poppers! I think Luke said these ones are full of glitter.âÂ
âPerfect.â Jack said, taking his place next to Nico.
âOkay guys⊠On three. One⊠Two⊠Three!â Ondrej announced as the poppers burst. Clouds of glitter and confetti surrounded Jack and Nico as the flash of the camera went off. Rather than looking at the camera as planned, the boys were focused intently on eachother, the photo having captured the way they looked at one another perfectly.Â
âThanks!â Nico and Jack said in unison as they walked back into the crowd, the pictures already forgotten in their drunk minds.Â
âOH MY GOD NEEKS I LOVE THIS SONG!!!â Jack called, grabbing Nicoâs hand and pulling him onto the dance floor.Â
Nico flushed at the new nickname, half convinced his face would become permanently red after this. He swayed to the music as Jack sang/yelled the words to him, something about a taxi and long roads, the words jumbled by the drunken Hughes. He couldnât help but feel that Jackâs words targeted him, his mind racing as he looked into his alternateâs eyes searching for anything that might hint to his thoughts. As the song ended, Nico remained where he was, staring into the blue eyes that held everything heâd ever dreamed of.Â
âTEN SECONDS TO MIDNIGHT!â Someone yelled, as everyone grabbed their partners in anticipation.
âTenâŠâÂ
âNico?â Jack whispered, his eyes fluttering down to Nicoâs lips.Â
âNineâŠâ
âJack?â Nico echoed, looking down at the boy in front of him.
âEightâŠâÂ
The shorter boy nodded as Nico looked down towards his mouth.Â
âSevenâŠâ
Nico licked his lips in anticipation.
âSixâŠâÂ
Jack looked up into Nicoâs eyes.
âFiveâŠâ
Nico rested his hands on Jack's face.
âFourâŠâ
Jack grabbed Nicoâs waist.
âThreeâŠâ
Jack pulled his captain closer.
âTwoâŠâ
Nico angled his teammateâs face towards him.
âOne!!â
Their lips connected and time stopped. Nico felt as if fireworks were erupting from him as he held Jack close, tangling one of his hands in Jackâs hair. Jack moaned into the kiss as Nico tightened his grip on his hair.
âHAPPY NEW YEAR!!!â Everyone cheered as they separated from their partners.
Jack and Nico pulled apart as they heard the click of a camera.
âFucking finally!â Ondrej said from behind the camera.
The boys laughed.
âHappy New Year Cap!â Jack said, his lips swollen from the kiss.
âHappy New Year Princess!â Nico smiled as Jack flushed.
The next morning Jack and Nico found themselves wrapped around each other in bed with a vague memory of what had happened the night before.
âDid we?â Jack asked, looking down to see himself fully clothed.
âNo, I donât think so.â Nico said, simply.
âI mean not that Iâd mind if we did, I just would want to remember it, ya know?â Jack rambled, looking over to Nico.
âShut up.â Nico said, pulling Jack into another passionate kiss.
A string of saliva connected their mouths as Jack pulled away for a breath.
âI guess we should clean up, huh?â Jack said, sitting up.
âThat can wait.â Nico said, gesturing to the growing erection in Jackâs dress pants.Â
âI guess it can.â Jack laughed, straddling Nico and pulling him into another kiss.Â
Nico pulled at Jackâs shirt as their tongues battled for control. Remembering the night before, Nico tugged at Jackâs hair causing him to moan into the kiss allowing Nico to take control. He quickly flipped Jack onto his back, swiftly unbuttoning his pwn shirt and throwing it onto the floor. Jack clutched to Nicoâs chest as he got to work unbuttoning his alternateâs shirt. Once he got it off, he threw it next to his own. Nico broke the kiss as Jack whined. He slowly kissed his way down Jackâs jaw and neck until he reached his nipples. He rolled his hands over one of them as he began sucking and biting at the other. Jack moaned loudly at Nicoâs actions, arching his back for more friction against the growing tent in his captainâs pants.Â
âNot yet baby, not yet.â Nico said, pulling away from Jack.
Jack whined again at the loss of contact, thrusting into the air in a pathetic attempt to gain more friction. Nico pulled his pants and boxers off in one foul swoop, freeing his member. He spit into his hands, lubing them as he started jacking himself off.Â
âJack, eyes on me baby.â He said, grabbing Jackâs neck and forcing him to watch.Â
Jack moaned loudly at the hand on his airway as he watched his partner pleasure himself. His dick began leaking as he watched his captain throw his head back in pure bliss.
âCan I?â Jack choked out, trying to take Nico into his mouth.
âYes.â
That was all he needed. Jack sprung to his knees, his painful erection forgotten as he licked a stripe up Nicoâs dick. Nico threw his head back in ecstasy as he clutched Jackâs hair to use him. When Jack realized what was happening, he moaned around Nicoâs cock, relaxing his throat so that Nico could use him like the slut he was.
âI bet you like this, huh? Being used like a toy.â Jack moaned.
Nico thrusted harder into Jackâs mouth as Jack tried not to gag, as his eyes prickled with tears that threatened to fall.
âIâm so close, baby, so close. Hold on for me.â Nico said, clutching Jackâs hair for dear life as he came down his throat.Â
Jack swallowed quickly before standing up and pulling Nico into a messy kiss. Nico loved being able to taste himself on Jackâs tongue, a reminder of who the boy belonged to.
âLetâs take care of you now, huh baby?â Nico said, wrapping a hand around Jackâs leaking cock.Â
Nico tugged at Jackâs cock, rubbing his thumb over the slit before getting on his knees and taking all of him into his eager mouth. Jack wasnât nearly as big as Nico, but his width more than made up for it. Nico sucked on Jackâs dick, watching as he threw his head back clearly close.
âIâm gonna-â Jack never finished his thought, coming in Nico's mouth. If Nico could get hard again this quickly he wouldâve from the sound of Jackâs voice wrecked from his cock.
âHey Jack?â Nico said, standing up and pecking Jack on the lips.
âYeah?â
âLetâs clean up now, yeah?â
âCandle wax and Polaroids on the hardwood floor
You and me, forevermore
Don't read the last page
But I stay when it's hard, or it's wrong, or we're making mistakes
I want your midnights
But I'll be cleaning up bottles with you on New Year's Dayâ

PART THREE:
Brendan threw the sheets into the washing machine, turning it on and wandering onto the deck to finish his beer. Itâd been a while since heâd seen Phoebe, and her presence was overwhelming.Â
The door opened and Phoebe sat beside him, looking out onto the water. For Brendan it felt like heâd traveled back in time to before heâd gone to college, before heâd messed up what theyâd had between them.Â
âYou really didnât have to give up your room for Lukeâs friend, I wouldâve been fine with him on the couch.â Phoebe said, breaking the comfortable silence.
âI know, I just⊠I feel like I should protect you. I know you can handle yourself and Mattyâs a great guy and all but⊠I guess Iâm jealous? I donât know.âÂ
âItâs not your place to be jealous anymore Bren, I mean you lost me.â She said, tucking her hair behind her ear and facing Brendan.
Bren.
Phoebe hadnât called him that since theyâd been together all those years ago, butterflies swarmed in his stomach as he looked into her blue eyes.
âI know Bea, I know.â He sighed, looking down into his almost empty drink, the moment shattered.
She rested her head on his shoulder as he finished his drink. Brendan imagined their lives hadnât changed, that Phoebe was still his. He wished they were still sneaking around once her brothers were asleep, driving to Walmart and running through the isles at midnight, oblivious to the world around them. He wished heâd kept the photos of them sheâd taken on her old camera when sheâd been obsessed with documenting every aspect of her life. He wished heâd never left that night, that heâd turned down Michigan and promised to stay with her forever. But he hadnât, heâd left and here they were.Â
Definitely not nothing but also not something.Â
An almost, a wish and a memory.
The next morning came, Brendan having slept on Phoebeâs couch as the sheets were in the dryer. He woke up, surrounded by her. Her clothing spread along the floor, perfume wafting through the brightly painted room. When Phoebe was younger sheâd taken her paint set to the walls and painted intricate murals of everything and everyone she loved. Brendan wished he could still see where they had hidden their names within a heart, a new mural having taken its place. Intricate vines surrounded a large sunflower, the faintest lines of their names still peaking through. Brendan stood up, walking towards the flower, another reminder of all heâd lost. He slowly traced his finger over the remnants of his name, a smile on his face.
âWhat are you doing?â Phoebe said, stepping out of the adjoining bathroom in nothing but a towel.Â
Brendan turned, startled as he quickly realized her lack of clothing. Despite the pure want clouding Brendanâs mind, he resisted the urge to grab her by the waist and remove the towel.Â
âI- uh- well- I was admiring this flower. It wasnât here before.â He said, a blush radiating up his neck and onto his cheeks.
âYeah okay Bren, sure. Now turn back around so I can get dressed.âÂ
He turned around resisting the urge, once again, to see her without her towel. Her beauty hadnât been lost on him as sheâd walked through the door the day before.Â
Once Phoebe was dressed, the two of them headed to the kitchen to get coffee and find out the plans for the day. Since Brendan had been in Vegas, he still hadnât acclimated to the time zone which meant heâd woken up much later than everyone else.
âGood morning sleepyhead.â Jack said as Brendan walked through the door, still clad in pajamas.Â
âHere, I made you a coffee, itâs kinda cold now thoughâŠâ Quinn smiled, handing him the drink.
Brendan had forgotten how great it felt to be around people who truly loved and appreciated him. Donât get him wrong, he loved his dad, but his dad had been away a lot growing up and the Hughesâ were the closest things he had to a functioning family.
âWhereâs Moosey?â Phoebe asked, sitting at a barstool and picking up the tea sheâd left earlier in the day.Â
âPicking up Matty, he should be back soon though.â Jack replied, taking the seat next to her.Â
Just as Brendan finished his coffee, the door opened and Matty bounded down the stairs.Â
âHugheseys, Brissy, Iâm hoooome!!â Matty had never been one for shy introductions as he quickly scooped Jack, Quinn, and Brendan into a hug.
âHey buddy, itâs been a while. Howâs Seattle?â Brendan asked, a genuine smile painting his face.Â
âItâs been good man, rainy, but good. How âbout Vegas?â Matty smiled, genuinely happy to be back at the lake.Â
âGood, really hot, but also fun.â Brendan laughed, as he tried to mimic what Matty had said.
âOh, hey. You must be Phoebe, rude of me not to introduce myself. Iâm Matty.â He said, offering a hand to shake as Phoebe wrapped him into a hug.
âNo need for pleasantries, if Lukey likes you so do I. How was your flight?âÂ
Brendan tried not to acknowledge the pang of jealousy heâd felt when Phoebe had so easily offered his friend a hug. She hadnât hugged him when sheâd seen him again, and Luke liked him more than Matty! He knew it wasnât fair, knew their relationship was different, but it still hurt.Â
âIt wasnât that bad actually, I got to watch some movies I wanted to see and catch up on my sleep.â Matty said, a charming smile plastered onto his face.
Brendan frowned.
âOoh. What movies did you see? I watched Spiderman in the car yesterday. Tobey Maguire, obviously.â Phoebe said, clearly lapping up Mattyâs unwavering charm.
âOh well obviously Maguire was the best Spider-man, but Garfield was the better Peter Parker. And donât get me started on Holland. His Spider-man had it so easy. As for the movies I watched, I saw the new hockey romance movie, Odd Time Rush, and I also started the Elvis movie but I fell asleep like halfway through.â He smirked, looking at Phoebe.
âDidnât peg you as a romance guy, but I guess the hockey part makes sense. All work all the time.â She said, rolling her eyes.
âWhat did you peg me as, huh? You just met me, thereâs so much to get to know.â Matty winked, as Phoebe chuckled.
âAlright guys thatâs enough. Get a room.â Brendan said, finally having enough of their banter and skulking away to Phoebeâs room.

PART TWO:
âExcuse me?â Jack cut in, offended.
âYeah- Wait. Sheâs done WHAT before?!â Luke added.
âGuys relax, it was one time⊠If I recall correctly someone may have spilled their drink on meâ She said, nudging Brendan.
âMore than onceâŠâ Brendan cut in, fucking with Phoebe.
âMore than once⊠huh Pheebs? Something you wanna share with the class?â Quinn said, laughing.Â
When Quinn laughed, Phoebe relaxed. None of the boys actually thought anything had happened between Phoebe and Brendan, but it was always enjoyable to poke fun at their little sister.Â
âSure, Lilâ Hughes has been around my closet plenty of times.â Brendan said, laughing and climbing into the boat.
âYeah. Okay Briss.â Jack said, patting Brendan on the back, and sitting next to him.
Quinn sat behind the wheel as she joined the boys on the boat. Luke pushed us from the dock. Phoebe sat at the front, hoping to get a bit of sun on our drive. Brendan sat with Luke and Jack at the back of the boat, laughing and grabbing snacks from the bag heâd brought. Phoebe put on her sunglasses, closing her eyes and laying against the seat as the boys bickered behind her.Â
âBro- Sheâs totally asleep.â Luke called to the back of the boat, standing over Phoebe.
âHow are we supposed to get her back to the house? I mean Iâm not carrying her, not after last time.â Jack said, jumping off the boat. The last time Jack had tried to carry sleeping Phoebe, sheâd woken up causing them both to fall into the grass.Â
âYâall are weak. Iâll just do it.â Brendan said, trying to avoid another fight.
He scooped the sleeping girl into his arms, wrapping her limbs around him as he stepped onto the dock. Still asleep, she nestled her face into his neck.
âOh my god. Sheâs gonna be pissed when she sees that!â Quinn said after noticing that Jack had taken a picture of the loving scene.
âLake highlights!â Luke called, recalling the time Phoebe had posted a photo of him asleep on the boat.
âHey Huggy, send that to me, yeah?â Brendan asked, smiling.
âWhat? Wanna study it or something?â Quinn said, laughing.
âThis is definitely the closest heâs ever been to a woman. Probably wants to remember it forever.â Jack added as the boys, save Brendan, burst into laughter.
âWoman? I hadnât noticed.â Brendan said, walking back to the house.
âDonât let her hear you say that.â Luke called after him.
âYeah, sheâll kick your ass. I mean thereâs a reason we keep our teasing light.â Quinn laughed as he walked through the sliding door.
Brendan carefully placed Phoebe into his bed, opting against invading her space by going through her room. The girl curled into the blankets, draping an arm around the standing boy. Had she been awake, Brendan wouldâve made a joking comment about their past, but her peaceful face reminded him of what heâd lost.
âOkay Hughesy, Iâm gonna go back to the kitchen with your brothers. Let me know if you need anything.â He smiled, mostly to himself and removing her arm from around him.
âYo, Briss! Took you long enough.â Jack laughed as Brendan entered the room.Â
âWhat can I say? The ladies love me.â He replied, a smirk covering his face.
âStill my sister dude, ew.â Jack said, disgust evident on his face.
âY'all, is it okay if I invite Matty to visit for a few days?â Luke said, walking into the kitchen and easing the tension.
âSure man, do we have the space? I mean mom and dadâs room is off limits so we only have four roomsâŠâ Jack said, trying to figure out the sleeping arrangements.
âI mean someoneâs gonna have to share, why donât you just move into my room Rowdy?â Luke asked, ratifying the situation.
âOh hell no. You snore,â Jack replied, âNo one wants to deal with that.âÂ
âSorry, bro.â Brendan replied when Luke gave him an expectant look.
âHey Quinner!â Luke called across the room as his older brother walked into the kitchen, hair wet from a shower.
âWhatâs up Moosey?â Quinn said, grabbing a gato from the fridge.
âWill you room with Jack so Matty can visit for a bit?â Luke asked, a pleading look in his eyes.
âAbsolutely not. Iâm the oldest, I want my room to myself. Sorry bro.â Quinn uncapped his drink and took a sip.
âBriss?â Luke asked, turning to his last resort.
âLook, I mean I donât mind sharing a room.â He shrugged, turning to Jack.
âHold on. My room has one bed⊠Not happening buddy.âÂ
âWell that settles it then, no Matty.â Luke sighed, defeated.
âHold on guys.â Phoebe said, walking into the kitchen, still clad in her bathing suit.
âThe princess awakens from her slumber.â Brendan said, holding his arm out as dramatically as possible.
âWhat if your friend just sleeps on the couch in my room? I mean I have the biggest room.â She said, shrugging as if it was that simple.
âNo way in hell Iâm leaving you in a room with him,â Brendan cut in, âguys?â
âI mean sheâs right, itâs not like theyâre sharing the bed or anything.â Luke replied.
âYeah, loosen up Briss itâll be fine.â Jack smiled, patting him on the back.
âPhoebe doesnât even know Matty, I should take the couch. He can have my room.â Brendan said, not willing to admit defeat.
âBrendan. I can handle myself.â Phoebe said, shocked that heâd insinuate anything different.
âI know you can, Iâm just looking out for you. Thatâs what friends are for.â She visibly recoiled as the last sentence left his mouth.
âWhatever.â She replied, coldly, walking into her room.
âWhat just happened?â Luke asked as she closed the door.
âI donât know.â Jack and Quinn said at the same time.
âI think I need a beer.â Brendan said, as the boys looked at him expectantly.
âOkay. Be like that then.â Luke said, handing him a beer from the fridge.
âWhat do you expect me to say? Iâm just as confused as you guys.â Brendan said, taking a swig and leaning against the counter.
âOkay. Sure. Just go pack up your stuff, Mattyâs coming tomorrow. We gotta wash your sheets tonight.â Luke said, a clear dismissal.
âGotcha man. Give me twenty and Iâll have the sheets in the wash.â Brendan said, saluting to the brothers.

PART ONE:
With summer quickly approaching, Phoebe Hughes was ready to put her books away and lounge around the lake with her brothers. Although she had spent almost everyday with Luke whilst at school, she was still looking forward to having one-on-one time with the three of them like it used to be. She was proud of her brothers, of course, but with two of them in the NHL and one about to leave, she was starting to miss constantly being with them, something sheâd never admit to. When the last day of the semester finally came, she and Luke packed up the car, smiling and waving to Lukeâs teammates as they pulled out of the driveway.Â
âReady Pheebs?â Luke asked, turning the car onto the main road.
âDefinitely.â Phoebe nodded, glad that summer continued to be a constant in their ever-changing lives.Â
When they pulled up to the lake house, Phoebe was overwhelmed with the pure bliss accompanied by the wooded scenery. The lake was the one place that really felt like home to her after moving around so much as a kid. Stepping out of the car, Phoebe was transported back to high school summers with various members of her brothersâ teams, laughing around the fire pit without the stresses of adulthood. The smell of the pine trees filled her nose as she spun around, tilting her head back.
âGood to be back, huh?â Luke asked.
âYou know how much I love this place.â She replied simply, everyone knew how much she loved her summers. Just as she was about to knock on the door, it opened and Jack stepped out, bumping into her.
âUmph- PHEEBS! I missed you kiddo.â Jack quickly wrapped her into a huge hug. Being the youngest of the Hughes siblings, Phoebe was used to being babied by her brothers and their friends.
âMissed you too Rowdy. Whereâs Quinn?â She asked, stepping into the foyer. The foyer consisted of a massive hallway, and stairs leading down into the main rooms of the house.Â
âOh, Quinnâs just showing Briss around the house, you remember him right?â Boy did she remember him. Brendan had been her first crush, her first kiss, her first taste of teenage rebellion, and as all things go, her first heartbreak. Of course, the boys had no idea or Brendan would not have been invited back to the house, let alone breathing.
âOh. Um. Maybe? You guys have a lot of friends.â She shrugged, avoiding eye contact.
âYouâll recognize him when you see him, he was around a lot when we were younger. Iâll help Luke unload the car now, you should go find Quinn.â Jack said, dismissing Phoebe and walking out the door.Â
Great.
Phoebe wandered down the stairs, mentally preparing herself for the overwhelming emotions that would come when she laid eyes on Brendan again. She thought sheâd gotten over him when sheâd ended up at University of Michigan in his wake, but the pain of what heâd done forever lingered. She didnât really blame him, she was three years younger and never expected anything to come of their relationship, but it still hurt when he pulled away and left for college.Â
âHey Pheebs, how are ya?â Quinn said, walking to the foot of the stairs and pulling her into a long hug.
âQuinny, I missed you buddy.â She replied easily, hugging him back.
âBy the way, Briss is in the guest room if you wanna say hi, I know you guys spent a lot of time together growing up.â Leave it to Quinn to have picked up on their fleeting relationship, although it seemed he didn't know the true nature of it.Â
âOh. Uh- Maybe. Iâm gonna unpack firstâŠâ
âIs- Are you okay Pheebs?â Of course he picked up on her hesitancy. Quinn had always been the most observant of her brothers, he always knew when things were off about her.
âYeah, just tired.â
âOkay. Weâre gonna head out on the boat in a bit if you wanna join.â He dropped the subject, although it was clear he didnât believe her in the slightest.Â
She walked to her room, opening her drawers and putting on an old swimsuit. Since she was usually only away during winter months, she left her warm weather clothes at the house, opting to make the drive on odd weekends when the weather warmed up. The bikini she grabbed had been Brendanâs favorite on her, small high waisted polka dot bottoms with a matching pink top. She hardly noticed the suit sheâd grabbed, however, her mind preoccupied by thoughts of what itâd be like to finally see him again.Â
âPHEEBS LETS GO!â Quinn yelled through the door, breaking her from her thoughts.
âCOMING HOLD ON!!â She replied, pulling her brown hair out of its ponytail and letting it cascade down her shoulders. She ran out her door, figuring sheâd grab one of her brotherâs shirts as a cover up.Â
âWoah.â A voice, Brendan, whispered. She wasnât expecting him to look better than he had years before. He had been hot then, but now⊠Well now he was a whole other level of hot.Â
âPick your jaw up off the floor before my brothers see you ogling me. You had your shot, remember?â I said, walking into Jackâs room and grabbing a shirt from the closet.Â
âUh. Yeah.â He replied, following her into the room and scratching the back of his neck. As he raised his arm, his shirt lifted just slightly and Phoebe could see the outline of his abs, he certainly hadnât had that when they were younger, thatâs for sure.
âCâmon Lilâ Hughes, your brothers are already on the boat.â He said, leaning on the door frame as Phoebe put on Jackâs shirt, butterflies erupting in her stomach at the nickname she hadnât heard in years.
He led the way down to the boathouse, making jokes and trying to rekindle their relationship and Phoebe couldnât help but find it endearing. When they reached the boathouse, Phoebe was just about ready to forgive him.
âHey Pheebs, Briss nice of yâall to finally join us.â Luke said, nodding in their direction.
âWoah, Pheebs, whoâs shirt is that?â Jack asked, confused.
âYou mean itâs not yours? Why the hell was it in your closet?â She asked, starting to get frustrated.
âIt wasnât- Briss and I traded rooms cause the other room was too bright for him with the big windowsâŠâ
âOH. MY. GOD. Youâre wearing Brissâ shirt! HAHAHA!!â Luke interrupted Jack, cackling like a hyena.Â
âBrendan.â Phoebe quickly turned to Brendan, her face shrouded in a frown.Â
âI- What?â He asked, raising his hands up in mock surrender.
âWhy didnât you say anything?!âÂ
âI thought you knew?â He said, shrugging. âItâs not like you havenât done it before.âÂ
Summary: Jane Cambell is Mitchell Marner's best friend, and when he asks her to let the rookie goalie stay in her guest room, who is she to say no?

Mitch and I had grown up next door to one another. There wasnât a birthday party, school event, or family function where we werenât together. We were inseparable. So, when Mitch got drafted to the Leafs, it made sense for me to follow him and attend the University of Toronto. I loved being around the team and doing homework at practices. I was thrilled to interview Mitch for my final papers, to spend time with him again. Once I graduated, I went on to work for the team, Mitch and I stayed close. When Mitch met Steph, I was overjoyed. She was perfect for him, but it left me with more time to myself. Something I didnât understand what to do with. I found myself wandering aimlessly after work, never having plans.Â
When Mitch told me the team had called up a new goalie, I wasnât sure what to expect. Since he had recently moved in with Steph, he had asked me if the new guy could use my spare room until he got on his feet. I, of course, said yes. Mitch had always been a great judge of character and if he felt comfortable letting him stay with me, then I felt comfortable. What I didn't expect, however, was for this man to come through the door with lego boxes stacked above his head. And like⊠goalies are tall, but I couldnât even see his face.
âHey! Thanks for letting me crash, let me just set these down in the room and we can properly introduce ourselvesâŠâ He said, his voice muffled by the many boxes in front of him.
âOh yeah of course, um it's the door to the left of the TV.â I replied, stepping aside so he could walk in. It took him about five minutes to set the boxes how he wanted them, the echo of fallen boxes and muttered curse words heard throughout the apartment.Â
âCan you help me grab my bags? I donât really have that much stuff yet⊠I mean Iâm not really new to Toronto but I just lived with teammates when I was on the Marlies so likeâŠâ He said, rambling on as he stepped back into the main room. His blue eyes caught mine and he quickly lost whatever thought he was about to share. Like seriously are piercing blue eyes mandatory to be on the Leafs? Because, wow.
âIâm Joseph⊠Uh Woll⊠yeah. But I mean most people call me Joe hahaâŠâ He said, his left hand scratching the back of his neck and holding his other out awkwardly.
âJane, but my friends call me Janie.â We shook hands. Joe and I found our rhythm easily. He would leave before I got up in the morning and I would meet him at the office for lunch before going to meetings. Weâd head home together on off-days, laughing about anything and everything. I felt like that missing piece Iâd been searching for had been found.
The hard-part was always away games. Joe and Mitch would spend weeks away, traveling for games whilst I was left in a mostly empty office, planning future events and booking flights. When the boys are away Steph and I usually grab dinner and talk, but I was hesitant to have to answer questions about my relationship with Joe. He and I had gotten increasingly close and several of his teammates had picked up on some of the underlying tension on my end. It was clear to me, at least, that Joe wasnât interested in me, despite what Kniesy kept saying. Kniesy and Joe are pretty close, but I canât help but feel like heâs just messing with me. Plus, I mean I donât even know what Mitch would do about me dating a teammate of his. I mean he was always protective growing up, purposefully keeping me from his teams. The one time I did go out with someone from his team, we realized weâd be better off as friends, which is how I ended up with Matthew Tkachuk as my fantasy football teammate.Â
I decided to go to dinner with Steph anyway, as I wanted to catch up with her. When I sat down across from her at the restaurant, my phone started buzzing. I mouthed, âhold onâ to Steph as I stood up and answered the phone.
âThis is Jane Campbell speakingâŠâ
âNo I know, Janie itâs me, I- I just needed to hear your voiceâ The voice on the phone, Joe, said clearly out of breath.
âJoe whatâs going on? Are you okay?â I started panicking, why was he calling me. He never calls.
âItâs. Iâm fine. I just- Did you see the game?â I hadnât. I was so busy getting ready to see Steph and finishing work, that Iâd completely forgotten to tune in.
âNo- I- Tell me whatâs happening.â I felt like screaming, what wasnât he telling me? The walls felt like they were closing in.
âItâs Kniesy.â Two words that first had me breathing a sigh of relief and then feeling guilty as the walls crashed in once again.
âOkay,â I took a breath, âokay. What do you need from me? What happened? Iâm with Steph. Do you need me to get there?âÂ
âJust stay on the phone please. Heâs. He just collapsed. I mean the hit didnât look that bad but I guess it was? I- I donât know Janie. I donât know.â A sob erupted from him as he tried to keep himself composed. Where was the game again? I could have sworn Iâd written it down somewhere⊠I looked through my bag, dumping the contents on the table in front of a concerned Steph.
âAre you still there?â His voice almost whispers, having been wrecked by his sobs.
âYeah, Iâm here Joey. Donât worry. Iâm not going anywhere.â The nickname escaped me before I even knew I was saying it. Shit.
âJoey?â His quiet voice still shaking.
âI- I meanâŠâ
âNo- I- Uh- I like it- It just caught me off guard thatâs all.â His smile was clear even through the phone.
âOkay wait- The gameâs in Buffalo right? Let me just⊠Iâll see you in a few hours, okay? What hotel are you in?â I blurted out, before I could even process what I was saying. All I know is that Joey needs me and I want to- no, have to- be there.Â
âYou donât have to come, I mean itâs fine. Iâll be fine.â He rushed, trying to convince me not to go, but it was too late.
âSee you in a bit Joey, bye.â I quickly said, trying to hang up.
âI L-â I hung up.
âOkay Steph, I gotta go. I- uh- Iâm so sorry, Iâll venmo you for the salad.â I said, grabbing my coat from the back of my chair and shoveling everything back into my bag.
âIs everything okay?â Steph said, panicking.
âYeah, Joeâs worried about Matthew, apparently he got hurt during the game. Iâm just gonna fly out to Buffalo to be with him.â
âYou and Joseph, huh?â She said, winking, âI mean I told Mitch yâall were a good match, but he didnât think it would happen this quicklyâŠâ
âOh- Um. No, weâre not together. I mean- I donât think he even likes me like that⊠Not that I like him or anything.â
âMhm, and he called his âplatonic roommateâ for comfort when his best friend got hurt, and, said âplatonic roommateâ is flying to another country to check on him⊠Okay!â
âThatâs exactly whatâs happening. Plus, New York is barely another country.â
âSure⊠Sure. Have a nice flight Janie.â
âThanks.â
The flight went quicker than I expected. I sat in my seat, my knee bouncing as I waited to see Joe. I was still unsure of what happened to Matthew, but if Joe was worried, so was I. The little pest had started to grow on me.
I rushed into Joeâs hotel, asking the front desk to let me through. Joe had let them know Iâd be coming and to let me in. When I got to his door, I took a breath before knocking.
âJanie, thank god.â He said, opening the door and scooping me into a big hug.
âIâm here Joey, Iâm here.â He stiffened at the nickname as he released me.Â
âWhat?â I asked, confused.
âNothing⊠I- I just like when you call me Joey, thatâs all.â He said, letting me into his room.Â
âHowâs Matthew?â I asked, grabbing his hand for moral support.
âThe doctor said heâll be okay, just a concussion. It just really scared me, you know? I mean one moment we were laughing about him asking a girl out, and the next heâs on the ice.â
âA girl?â I asked, waggling my eyebrows.
âYeah, I mean it feels silly now but he wants to ask the barista at the coffee shop by the rink for dinner.â He smiled, squeezing my hand.
âThatâs such a good idea omg! Not silly at all, I mean sheâs really pretty and nice.â
âIt just got me thinking, you know? Like what if he wasnât okay? What if he never got to tell the girl? It feels so trivial to worry about rejection at this point.â
âBut he will get to tell her Joey. And sheâll say yes and itâll be great and theyâll be together!â Iâm not sure where heâs going with this, but Iâm doing my best to reassure him that Kniesy and the Barista will get together in the end.
âWill they?â He asks, furrowing his brows.
âOf course, if theyâre meant for eachother, itâll happen.â I smiled, looking up at him, my hand still in his.
âWill we?â He asks.
âWill we do what?â I ask, confused.
âWill we get together?â He asks and my stomach flutters.Â
âJoey?â I feel like Iâm hallucinating thereâs no way he means what I think he means.
âJane. Janie. I love you. Every moment weâre apart is like I'm drowning and youâre my air.â He grabs my face, angling my eyes up to his.
âJoey⊠I love you too.â I closed my eyes as our lips met, fireworks erupting as the butterflies dissipated from my stomach.

PART THREE: Pillow Fights and Breakfast
I woke up the next morning with a mysterious arm slung around me. With the fuzziness of sleep enveloping my mind, I began to nuzzle into the body next to me, its warmth comfortable and inviting.
"Good morning." The mysterious voice whispered, the voice deep and warm with sleep. My morning delusion shattered as I realized where I was and who's voice had just spoken. I jumped out of bed, running into the adjoining bathroom to wash my face, and trying to remember the night before.
"Oh yeah, don't worry about me or anything. It's not like I hauled you up the stairs last night or anything." He called to me, annoyance laced into his voice. I walked back into the room as my head cleared.
"You tell no one about this. You hear me?"
"Yes ma'am. Whatever you say." He saluted to me grabbing a pillow from next to him and throwing it towards me. Luckily, having grown up with the Hughes brothers, I was ready. I grabbed the pillow out of the air and jumped into the bed, attempting to smother him.
"KEEP IT DOWN IN THERE! THERE'S OTHER PEOPLE IN THIS HOUSE TOO!" A voice, Jack, called out to us, laughter evident in his voice.
"Oh my god. You don't think he... you know... thought we were-" I quickly said, struggling to find the right words.
"We were what y/n?" Of course he would make this hard for me.
"You know..."
"No I don't. Please enlighten me y/n." I wasn't about to let him win, so I did the only thing I could think to do. I jumped on top of him, forcing the pillow onto his face.
"Ha! I win!" I jumped up, smiling. My victory was short lived, however, as he grabbed my waist, pulling me onto him. Unlike growing up wrestling with Jack, Luke, and Quinn, I wasn't used to being this close to Trevor. I looked up to see his bright eyes shining into mine. I had never noticed how blue they were, like small oceans inviting me to swim.
"Like what you see?" He smirked towards me, jokingly? Eyeing my mouth. He really did snap me back to reality, I'd have to remember to thank him later.
"Oooookay that's enough of that, I'm going down to breakfast, care to join?" I asked, walking away and opening the door.
"Oh uh- sure let me just take care of a few things first and I'll meet you down there."
"Yeah, I'll leave you to your things." I said putting air quotes around the word things. I had no idea what he'd meant by that, but I couldn't let him know. I walked down the stairs, almost bumping into Jack on the way down.
"Sounds like you two had quite the morning, huh?" Jack smiled, teasing me and poking me gently in the ribs.
"OH MY GOD EWWWW! You know that would never happen."
"Sure y/n. Sure." He walked passed me up the stairs and into his room. When I got to the kitchen, I quickly made myself a smoothie, cursing myself that I had forgotten my phone upstairs. Although I was close to just retrieving it from the room, Trevor's cryptic message echoed in my head and I decided it was best not to find out what his things were.
