grew up in seabrook quarter as part of a family of seven. two parents, five children, maura being the fourth born. her grandparents lived barely 3 minutes walk down the road.
tried and tested every kind of extracurricular as a kid, never properly stuck with any of them, if she wasn’t good at them straight off, she wanted out.
excelled at art, spent summer at art based summer camps, spent every hour she had free trying her hand at different medias.
went to the school of the art institute of chicago after high school (her first time moving away from aurora bay).
upon graduating, got a placement with a well-respected artist in the art world. he was older, treated her fairly well. didn’t offer much in terms of artistic freedom, but experience under him was a positive. kind of like a ticket to getting your work into any art show going forwards.
that was until he started getting too close, offering maura a chance at her own work and leaning in just a little too close for comfort. not that she imagined that would go any further, and if that was her ticket to art fame, she could deal with it.
until it did go beyond acceptable, not that it went too far (she saw red and he really underestimated how strong someone barely 5ft could be) but hands got too close and she found herself kicking an ‘innocent old man’ away from her, words of 'what the fuck’ echo'ing through the studio.
maura doesn’t really remember what happened, but he did end up with broken ribs and a black eye, and she was arrested for assault. however, he dropped the charges pretty quickly, not wanting the truth to come out on his part, but keeping them going long enough to try and scare her into silence.
only he managed to harm her in other ways, she got fired (not that she would have stayed), but nobody wanted to hear her side (money and reputation really does talk), and he promised to make her unhirable going forwards.
which happened to be the case, a mere six months of living on savings (whilst trying to keep up a lifestyle she’d come accustomed to) had her penniless and crawling back home.
she’s still looking in the art world for another placement, but whenever she thinks she’s getting anywhere her former boss’ name somehow creeps up and contact dies out. if only he’d croak it, maybe he’d stop spreading lies.
