How could it get better? How could it possibly get better? 

Ash was gone, taking Eiji’s heart and soul with him. After all, he had promised that it would always be there with Ash. And now it laid six feet below the ground and buried away from any hope of dawn. 

Eiji chokes back a sob, but his body trembles as Shunichi holds him. “I want it gone. I want the pain gone now. I do not want to feel it anymore, Ibe-san!” Eiji is almost yelling now, chest heaving. “I want this gone!” 

I want him back. 

Ibe held him, rubbing him back. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry I brought you there, I’m sorry...” This pain could have been avoided if he’d just kept Ibe away from Ash’s gang. But now, the boy’s world was turned upside down. “Focus on the love you had for him, the good times, and try not to think about the bad. Remember him for the good he did, the good you two had together....I’m so sorry...”

ASH let Max hold him – arms carefully wrapped around him as if he was something precious and worth being cared for. It had taken a second for the lynx to realize that he probably should return the sentiment even if it took the form of awkwardly embracing him back.

“Just because we had Michael first doesn’t make you any less my son.” Max said firmly. “You’re his older brother, and my eldest child.” He brushed Ash’s hair from his eyes. “We even made it official, so no take-backsies.”
