Even if we’re not viewing BJ as closeted or in love with Hawkeye, basically not giving him a reason to want a divorce, I do think he would still end up divorced from Peggy when he returns home.

Time and time again when he’s fretting over what’s going on back home and especially when he’s freaking out over even the idea of Carl the handyman in “No Sweat” he’s essentially not trusting Peggy, he thinks she’s going to run off, etc. and I think that would come as a slap in the face for Peg who up-kept their house, raised their baby, got her Real Estate license, and another job, all while he was away. Him second guessing her at every turn just feels like the beginning of the end because even if his fears come from not being needed/wanted or from being replaced in his own life, they still are very inconsiderate to Peg. Also ironic considering he cheated on her once, and was tempted another time, so he’s very hypocritical and some of that may also stem from his own guilt over cheating so even if she DOES cheat on him it’s like well, BJ buddy…. so did you……

So if any of those feelings seeped into his letters or started to make themselves known when he got home, along with the added chafe of him being significantly changed by the war and out of place in civilian life, to me it just spells divorce for baseline personal reasons. They likely met young and were separated for two years, I don’t think it would be crazy for their relationship to fall apart due to them growing as individuals significantly over that time and with the added issues that come out of BJ even though I don’t doubt he loves Peg.
