What if the scars are a symbol for the cage Jean keeps over his heart? It's the box that he locks to keep all the unpleasant things of the past in and all the dangerous things of the future out?

But there is another heart metaphor.

There's a chunk missing from the middle of the bear magnet. It's missing its heart and that prevents it from being fixed.

But Jean's heart is still intact despite it all. It's just hidden away. The Ravens didn't break him. He is has the power to fix himself.

And eventually, that cage over his heart breaks.
