I hate when people say a movie is good to “turn your brain off”

Because what they really mean is that the movie makes it clear you need to suspend disbelief

You are not watching a documentary, nor are the movies saying everything depicted really happened

You’re sitting beside a metaphorical fireside while someone tells you a story, and if all you care about is whether every t is crossed and i is dotted then you’re missing the magic

If you watch a movie, listen to an album, play a game, etc… and you cannot find anything positive to take away from it then I think that reflects worse on you than the art

There is so much beauty and passion in flawed works, and cynical reviewers who play at being critics only care about squashing

current fan creation landscape is kinda like if you went to a party with a homemade cake and everyone takes a slice and silently thumbs up at you with no attempt to start a conversation except for occasionally some guy sits in the corner with a tape recorder critiquing the cake as though he was a restaurant critic and another guy is handing the cake to an uber driver like "yeah i need you to find a restaurant that makes cake like this so i can have more of it" and the only person that's talked to you in 30 minutes is a very sweet little guy who was like "hey i liked your cake" and then ran away apologizing for bothering you the moment you said thank you.

someone brought a cake analysis robot to feed the cake into to determine the exact ingredients and supposedly it can spit out the exact same cake. and if you're like dude. what. then they're like well if it bothers you you should have made more cake. i'm hungry and i deserve cake. and you're like dude we're at a party.

Three months later you find out that fifty people locked themselves in a room to discuss how much they loved your cake and how they wished you made more. None of them ever told you.

I think the idea that the developers are showing a “preference” for Verso’s ending over Maelle’s is pure copium and buyer’s remorse

Maelle got *exactly* what she wanted. She is happy and all the painted people (except Verso) are alive and well

The problem is that what she wants is to enslave an entire world to her own dream of happiness while she slowly withers away and loses herself to the painting.

She is now a new Paintress, and we probably won’t ever know if it turns out different from how it did before. But the implication is that it already isn’t going great.

But she is happy, and she has her way. Which is what her ending was always going to be. A god playing among mortals and pretending like they have anything resembling free will or agency while she’s around.

Got called in for jury duty. This dude tried to take off with the princess and her jewelry. But he also helped a little girl get her lost kitty cat so this could go either way

I cannot see how anyone would think Maelle’s ending is a happy one. She forces an entire world to live within her delusion and condemns them to a bleak future when she finally loses herself within the canvas

Verso’s is sad, but it leads to healing. Maelle functionally enslaves Verso to keep her happy make-believe world ticking

If you reread/watch Jujutsu Kaisen from the very beginning it becomes immediately clear that Gojo was doomed by the narrative from the very beginning.

This man is so powerful he’s the literal Jujutsu society equivalent of a nuke. Power levels are measured in Gojos. Even he tells the elders they aren’t being responsible with the power tiers because there is stuff that goes beyond Special Grade.

The world we are introduced to in JJK is one of entropy. A society that is so relaxed because of the one superpowered man on their side that they ignore the storms on the horizon.

Everything happens because Gojo is too strong, and the powers that be refuse to risk the sanctity of their bloodlines and techniques long enough to create safeguards in case the worst happens.

If it were not for Gojo’s foresight with his students then we wouldn’t have even gotten the bittersweet ending we did. He knew that, as powerful as he was, he was not invincible. He dreamed of the future rather than living in the past.

But the future would never come while he was still alive

The Strangers is just not a very good movie and trades plausibility for capitalizing on fears the western audience felt much more keenly after 9/11

The movie has no real plot or substance. It’s only about making you feel tense and on edge because anything could happen
