The infamous flying zombie head from Lucio Fulci's swansong 'Zombie 3' 1988. Fulci fell ill during filming and veteran exploitation hack Bruno Mattei stepped in to complete the shoot. Fulci disowned the film shortly before his death and it seems more like Mattei's, with plot and action sequences like his 'Hell of the Living Dead' which is one of the great bad zombie pics. Logs. A viewing experience that's downbeat to the point of despair but brilliantly executed on its own terms, Mou Tun-fei's 'Men Behind the Sun' 1988, is a graphic no holds barred recreation of the frankly hideous experiments conducted by the infamous Japanese medical research Unit 731 at the end of the 2WW on Chinese civilians and Soviet POW. Its no exploitation film but a sober piece of anti Japanese propaganda all the more chilling because it's true. For a beer and a really good nose pick. One of the best looking slasher pics of the eighties with terrific cinematography, George Mihalka's 'My Bloody Valentine' 1981 has a killer with a pickaxe settling old scores in a Nova Scotia mining town while the Mayor gets a valentine shaped chocolate box with a heart in it. Fackler! How's it going? Joseph Zito and Tom Savini teamed up again after 'The Prowler' for one of the best sequels 'Friday the 13th the Final Chapter' 1984. Jason escapes from a morgue and soon gets into the swing of things till he meets a kid even crazier than he is. Outside of the master Romero, Lucio Fulci easily has the best living dead resume, and his great achievement is his 'Gates of Hell' trilogy, a series of stately gothic horrors punctuated by jaw dropping ultraviolence and fabulous soundtracks and fx. Out of all the films, and there's some competition, the greatest death scene is poor Rose evacuating her guts through her mouth thanks to the supernatural evil of Father Thomas in the first part of the trilogy 'City of the Living Dead' 1980. Based on a story by Harvey Weinstein which just adds to the sleaze and with prog rock legend Rick Wakeman on soundtrack duties, Tony Maylam's 'The Burning' 1981 not only blatantly cashed in on 'F13th' but stole it's biggest star Tom Savini. His brilliant fx make up is the highlight of this creepy and nasty slasher which I actually prefer to any of the F13 sequels and spin off, worth watching for the awesome raft massacre alone.
