i've made a resolution for more ocposting so here is a post about the Coven of the Undying, aka decarsias's army of medieval frenemies. The Undying were a 13th century magical order whose members were united by a lofty goal: achieving immortality at any cost. Members were encouraged to fine-tune their research to their respective arcane field of study--if all of us are trying something different, there's a greater chance that one of us might strike gold, right?
In their earliest days, the Undying were seen, charitably, as cringelord freaks by their fellow orders. Just a small operation of misguided eccentrics chasing an impossible goal. As their membership grew and their methods increased in scope and brutality, though, they became targets of both church and state. Eventually they were all systematically hunted down by both their fellow mages, and the forces of the Knights Templar (technically also a magical order, but the church got touchy about people referring to theurgy that way. we don't have time to get into this right now. anyway).
below the cut is a rundown of prominent members and their respective wacky ways of trying to live forever. I have a lot of fun coming up with different twists to put on the immortality gimmick. It's a double edged sword tho because oh my god does it get hard after a while. anyway enjoy
the Coven of the Undying started its life as a two-man operation between co-founders Decarsias and Jordanes. They guided it harmoniously for almost two decades before a personal conflict between them led to a massive internal schism that split membership loyalties between them. My Bitch Wife Took The Apprentices In The Divorce, etc etc. Of all the members of the coven, their research was/is the most refined since they got a several years head start on it.
Decarsias - you know her you love her. One of history's most powerful necromancers with a very healthy self-esteem. Born an orphan with nothing to her name, her magical knowledge is entirely self-taught.
Age: 760s~, died at 45, looks 20s-ish (the partial putrefaction makes it hard to tell)
Specialization: necromancy
Notes: Decarsiasâs host body is the freshest corpse from the nearest graveyard at the exact moment of her death--which just so happened to be a murdered young woman. Judging by its looks--pallor, livor mortis, cloudy eyes--it had been dead for a little over half a day by the time she took hold. There was a wound in the center of the bodyâs chest which is largely unnoticeable now that her phylactery has filled the cavity. Her possession keeps the body preserved exactly in the state that it was in, and restores some vital function. If it is damaged in any way, it will be repaired to its âoriginalâ state in a manner of hours--as long as the phylactery remains unharmed.
Jordanes - a charismatic misanthrope. The firstborn son of a minor nobleman--his ancestral wealth is the only reason the coven could exist at all. Decarsias's Very Close (Ex) Friend.
Age: 760s~, died at 45, looks It Dependsâą
Specialization: pyromancy
Notes: Jordanes engineered a method of reincarnation that allowed him to carry his memories and magical ability with him into each successive incarnation. Aside from that, he is very typically human. The childhoods of each new life tend to be awkward and undignified experiences for him. As he has refined his reincarnation magic, his successive incarnations have gradually gained distinctive features--vivid, unnaturally red hair and hazel eyes that border on golden--that mark them as what they are.
There are way too many rank-and-file members of the Undying for me to get into in the scope of the story itself let alone this post, just know that they're there. A significant portion of them were also slain before they could achieve viable success with their research. Here are some survivors of note. All of them were mentored by Decarsias, Jordanes, or both, and their respect/admiration for their respective masters heavily impacted whose side they chose in the schism.
Archambault - the runaway daughter of a noble family who spurned both arranged marriage and a life in a convent. Apprenticed under and sided with Decarsias. Her master is very dear to her, but she's not on speaking terms with her right now.
Age: 730s~, died at 36, looks like a little Victorian child
Specialization: illusions, psionicsÂ
Notes: Archambaultâs current body is not one of her choosing. Her soul was sealed into a bisque porcelain doll by an exorcist in the 1880s, and has remained there ever since. Her âtrueâ immortal form is a spectral entity that mostly mirrors how she looked in life, with the addition of traits resembling that of a melusine (wings, serpentine body from waist-down). In this form, she is visible but incorporeal, able only to interact with the physical world through use of psionic magic. Thatâs mostly irrelevant now, though--her current imprisonment in the doll makes it so her true form is unable to manifest.
Rohesia - though she apprenticed under both founders, she has greater respect, and thus loyalty, for Jordanes because she believes his interpretation of the covenâs philosophy to be the âpurerâ one. opinion of her, even from fellow members, was "this bitch scares me!!!"
Age: 730s~, died at 38, appearance varies
Specialization: bone, blood, and flesh manipulation (self only)
Notes: Rohesiaâs âtrue bodyâ is a bodysnatching parasite partially formed from her original skeletonâs spinal cord. The parasite body also has centipede-like legs formed from bone, and sensory antennae that extend from the tissue of its âheart,â a small mass of sinew that grows out of the cervical vertebrae and is protected by its own exoskeleton. She can attach herself to a living host and quickly claim their body as her meat puppet. While the vital functions remain active, her parasitization leaves her hosts braindead. She tends to target those who look similar to how she did when she was alive.
Vulferam - before joining the coven, he had very safe and straight-laced ambitions of becoming a mage the dependable and academic way. You make a lot of silly and impulsive decisions when you're 16, though.
Age: 730s~, died at 34, looks 30s (currently)
Specialization: arcane mycology
Notes: Vulferamâs current body is a fungus homunculus that was gradually grown from a colony of mushrooms. It looks very convincingly human on the surface, but if he is wounded, the truth of his nature is revealed. He has no blood or typical human organs, just one big fungal colony all the way down. If he suffers particularly grievous injuries, he can cultivate new body parts for himself by growing them from a new colony. He can also shift his appearance to take on new personas or to simulate aging, a tactic he uses when shedding old identities so that the truth of his immortality remains concealed.
We live in a system that makes money off of your misery and ambivalence. It relies on people thinking that they are inherently bad for the planet and that the world is ending so why change? Why try? --This is untrue! We belong here, on this one beautiful green earth and we have to work together to protect it. You have the power to do more than you know. You have a role to play in your ecosystem!
The notion that humans are an invasive species is an ecofascist belief. We evolved just like every other animal, we are meant to be here just like they are. This is our home and we have a duty to care for it and change the environment for the better!
Every single person has the power to make a meaningful impact on the planet. I had the most fireflies in my town this summer simply because I have a large area where the grass is never cut.
