the other day I read a compelling point that many instances described as illiteracy would actually be more aptly described as aliteracy, meaning an individual has the ability to read but simply chooses not to. great example here, awesome work.
I forget if I showed the beautiful Tyrian purple that they made in the synthesis chemistry lab that I collaborated with at the art museum. Theyโve been synthesizing mostly blue pigments and dyes from throughout history. This was my first time seeing Tyrian purple in person and I was so excited!
Historically it was made from murex snails and was hugely expensive and used by royalty, but chemically itโs similar to indigo so the class was able to create it in the lab without snails.

People who work within a system: okay so studies show that the normal system works 90% of the time, but because itโs very bad when it doesnโt work, weโve set up a process to manage those outliers. We need six well-trained workers to run the system 100% of the time without any serious incidents.

The concept that married people live longer is interesting. I'm sure there is some merit to the idea that if you're married there is someone there to nag you about going to the doctor, but I think much larger factors are having the finances of dual incomes and access to an immediate support person.
Surgeries require having a designated person to look after you. Many injuries require driving to somewhere like an emergency room which can be hard to do if you are the one injured. If you're home with the flu, it's hard to tell when it's bad enough to go to the hospital without another person checking on you. And if you pass out it requires another person to find you like that to get medical aid.
You can prop it up as the benefits of marriage, but I think there's a much deeper discussion to be had about how we've built society around marriage as an inevitable conclusion and neglected to build support systems that function outside of romantic pairings.

I know that my sample size is comically small, but in my experience, the scariest drivers I've ridden with as a passenger - out of the experienced drivers, who have been behind the wheel for decades, and excluding people who just got their licence - have been full-time professional artists. Like I have ridden shotgun with exactly two fully grown adults who were memorable to me as being "holy shit!" experiences, and one of them was a sculptor and the other one was an opera singer. Neither one actually hit anyone or anything, but the sheer amount of close brushes they had and casually breezed through was more than any other car ride I've ever been on, combined.
The fact that I am now a full-time professional artist, and also the worst driver I know, supports my theory. I don't drive unless there's nobody else who possibly can, and I tell people that I can't drive - I have a licence, but that doesn't mean I can drive. I am merely legally allowed to do that.
