i was talkin with some europeans about their healthcare and i realized like, even if i had the means to immigrate, i most likely would not be allowed to in most countries as a single person because I am disabled. This is another major aspect of ableism I don't see talked about often, the way immigration systems across the globe are designed to keep disabled people (who would be 'burdens' on the welfare system) out.

THIS. Imagine: things in your home country are starting to get really tense for a lot of different kinds of people and you start seriously considering emigrating elsewhere for a better life. After only a few minutes of research, imagine finding MOST countries around the world WILL NOT accept you (or require you to promise not to be “too disabled and a drain on the system”) because you are physically disabled. Mentally disabled. Have Autism on your record. I basically can’t leave the US even if I wanted to because I am too much of a risk in terms of needing healthcare. And this is true for all types of disabilities depending upon how that country views the severity of it.

One of the things I hate most about chronic illness is the selfishness of it all. “Put your health first”. “You can’t pour from an empty pitcher.” “Put your oxygen mask on before attending to your children.” I know. I do know. You CAN’T pour from an empty pitcher–the metaphor is sound. But my health, while first, is also next. And the thing after that. I have one doctor’s appointment pending this week, and three more I need to make. I have just given up on a treatment and don’t know what’s next.

This is the thing about Chronic. It keeps going. I will not be better able later today. I will probably not be better able tomorrow. It is possible, as much as it makes me want to scream, to rage, to breathe out the sun and burn down the world, that I will never be better able. That I will never be the partner, the parent, the artist, the friend that I want to be. The pitcher may never be full. My children, I sometimes think, are figuring out their own masks, while I am still gasping for air and trying to understand why it’s never enough. And I will have to wake up every morning, and Put My Health First, just so that I can get through the day intact, and I am SO SICK of taking care of myself. I am so sick of the necessary selfishness of just trying to be.

Featuring Chronic Pain/Illness

Making this list/post was and is pretty personal for me tbh. In my last rec post I know I vaguely mentioned that I was going through something personal that was really intense and pretty scary, I still am tbh, which is why my posts are infrequent. For those who are following me for my recommendation posts - I'm sorry for being a disappointment, but I can explain. The title of this post "featuring chronic pain/illness" may seem morbid, but I needed to make a list for myself first and everyone else who was looking for relatable fics to read. Now we're about to get personal: I'm not well. I have been going through the diagnosis process for debilitating chronic pain. I'm not gonna say any more than that, but the fics on this list have really helped me feel less alone, and whilst I don't have every single illness/issue featured in every fic on the list, I do have some of them. But basically I just wanted to share these, especially as there isn't a lot of representation of chronic pain/illness in the media and books let alone fandom and these fics took a long time and a lot of effort to find. something able-bodied people don’t really realize is that for disabled people (especially those of us with multiple conflicting disabilities), even when we accommodate our pain or struggles, other things like comfort can get sacrificed as a result. and what i mean by this is, for example, when i lay down because my whole body hurts and my stomach feels like it’s being stabbed, laying down does alleviate some of the pain, but being horizontal causes my nausea to flare up and so even though my back doesn’t hurt so much, i now feel like im going to vomit. and i can’t sit partially up while still lying down because the angle of my neck causes pain to surge through my neck and down my spine. for so many of us we have to choose between symptoms, decide which one is worse and which one we’ll have to endure. there’s often no escaping the pain and i need able-bodied people to understand this the next time they think “well it can’t be that bad” or try to make suggestions for how we could be relieving our pain. trust me, we know more about our bodies than you and whatever you’re thinking of suggesting, we’ve already thought of it. your input isn’t needed.
