I'm sorry, but I don't see a way forward. On the poetry side of tumblr, people are asking everyone to show compassion, and to remember that a family is hurting. Here in this fandom, though, there are a few who are posting very different messages.

Which means I need to step down as a mod. And yes, it's just a few people and I know the pat answer is 'just ignore them'. But as I already said, I don't see a way forward.

My partner and I have been together a long time, and we went through 9/11 together. My partner said something that has really made me stop and think:

It was so bizarre to watch people celebrate Osama Bin Laden, and he was a person who did awful things. This? was a youtube personality, who said controversial things.

What I really keep thinking about is that we knew a few people who celebrated Osama Bin Laden 's murder. Me and my partner intentionally distanced ourselves from those people, because this isn't just about showing compassion that someone died, or feeling sad for their family and friends, who loved them.

It's also about feeling sad for the choices that people make. Osama Bin Laden made awful choices. And once he was killed, he no longer had the opportunity to make different choices or make ammends for his actions.

I know people will say that's naive, but history has examples on both sides. John Newton, who made horrible choices, but spent the rest of his life making ammends. Roy Wilkins, who insisted on building coalitions with his enemies and so won over his enemies. Because of his efforts, Lyndon B Johnson (who was a southern politician through and through) signed one of the most monumental pieces of legislation in U.S. history.

And just 15 years ago, many people were deeply offended when Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Nancy Pelosi all eulogized Robert Byrd. Their defense was Robert Byrd, a KKK member who had fillibustered against the Civil Rights Act, was a changed man by the time he died.

What this really is about, though, is me. I don't like to speak ill of the dead, so I will just say my parents weren't nice people. I would love to say I've shed their legacy, but the truth is I'm a screw up, who has spent my entire lifetime making mistakes. So when these events happen, I need to look in a mirror and think hard about the choices I've made. Because history tells me that it's never too late to make better choices.

Which means I need to be in spaces where I'm surrounded by people who see these kind of events as tragedies, which can teach us not just to be more compassionate, but also push us to grow as human beings.

Again, I'm sorry I have to step down, but I don't see a way forward. I hope posting this explains why I can't be in a space where 'it's just a few' posting a different message. Just a few drops of that is like just a few drops of poison - it will kill my leaves first, then it will kill my growth. Eventually it will kill my roots, and finally my soul💔
