Favorite Underrated Anime Movies (excluding Ghibli and Shinkai Makoto)
さよならの朝に約束の花をかざろう
Sayonara no Asa ni Yakusoku no Hana wo Kazarou (Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms)
This is my #1 recommend movie (and maybe animation). The art, story, world building, love, voice acting (which is not very great in anime movies in general), is top tier. I can't recommend enough
屍者の帝国
Shisha no Teikoku (The Empire of Corpses)
It's pretty difficult to explain but it has Frankenstein themes and is about a dystopia where there is a technology that allow corpses to move but they don’t have a soul/will.
きみと、波にのれたら
Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara (Ride Your Wave)
A love story of a surfer girl and a boy she fell in love with.
ハル
Hal
This is a wit studio movie about a love story about a couple where one was lost because of an accident and is replaced by an AI lookalike.
ペンギン・ハイウェイ
Penguin Highway
Where do the mysterious penguins come from? Is the question this boy is currently trying to uncover. The art style is cute and the fantasy story is very fun!
海獣の子供
Kaijuu no Kodomo (Children of the Sea)
The whole movie is very artistic maybe a little trippy. Still, the two boys that come from the ocean give off Patroclus and Achilles aesthetic vibes and I love it for even just that.
海辺のエトランゼ
Umibe no Étranger (the Stranger by the Beach)
I recommend for even those hesitant about BL anime (I am too and I still liked it!). The love story is nice I think and the setting in southern Japan by the beach is very pretty.
On Your Mark
This is a short movie (music video) that ghibli made. It gives the dreamy magic that ghibli films give without the whole 2 hours. And it’s one of my favorite ghibli creations.
Of course Shinkai Makoto movies are so beautiful and Ghibli movies are so magical, but considering they are widely known, I'll just list my favs here:
Ghibli movies: 紅の豚 Kurenai no Buta (Porco Russo), ハウルの動く城 Howl no Ugoku Shiro (Howl's Moving Castle), 千と千尋の神隠し Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away)
Shinkai Makoto movies: 言の葉の庭 Kotonoha no Niwa (The Garden of Words), 君の名は。Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name.)
Thank you all so much for the unbelievable support for my Star Projector Kickstarter! ⭐🌟✨It's been less than a week and we're already halfway to the ultimate stretch goal where you can vote on a Projector color of your choice! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
I'm so excited to see how everyone will decorate their home with these stars 💖 Kickstarter.com/projects/yuumei/star-projector-and-lanterns
An Ode to Stars🌟 With the launch of my Star Projector Kickstarter, I took a look back on all the stars that I have painted over the years. There's just something so magical about their unique shape and glow that brings joy to my inner child. My actual childhood was quite traumatic so now I'm making up for all the lost time. Every painted star heals me just a little bit.
