Exit Through The (NPR) Gift Shop - Mayra Linares
Internship Position: Education Desk
Hometown/University: I’m a proud cheesehead. I grew up in Wisconsin but graduated from the Tec de Monterrey Campus Querétaro in México.
Favorite DC spot: The National Mall. But, just a few blocks away, resting in a nook of the O.A.S. Building there’s a bust of Sor Juana Inez De La Cruz that I like to visit. I love that there is a bit of Mexican history in D.C.
Favorite NPR show, blog or podcast: I love NPR Music’s Alt. Latino. I started listening to it a lot while living in Mexico, it made me feel closer to home. But, it also validated my experience as a Latina who grew up in America. I loved listening to the combination of Spanish, English, and music. This year, Invisibilia and the NPR Politics Podcast were prominently featured at home.
Number one song that you’re jamming to right now: Yorktown from the Hamilton Soundtrack. It makes me feel invincible.
Coolest thing you’ve done while at NPR: Every day is super cool. But, I have been drinking the world’s best coffee for three months so, that’s cool. I had coffee with Claudio Sanchez before we sat in on a panel with Mexican government officials. I had a few sips of home brewed coffee while driving to T.C. Williams High School where I met with Cory Turner to report on the new FAFSA form. I’ve also enjoyed drinking coffee during our Tuesday 2pm meeting where the Ed team discusses future stories and education related musings. I’m so thankful to have worked with them this fall! These are some of the things I worked on: 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Top #NPRLife moment(s): Tiny Desk Concerts. After spending hours on YouTube, it’s definitely a perk to see them live. To celebrate Halloween, NPR asked us to dress up or take photos of our pets in costume. I dressed up my beagle, Nina, as Beanie Baby. And, this is also one of the coolest things, I took over the nprinterns instagram for a few days.
Dream Tiny Desk artist: La Mala Rodriguez.
What’s next for you: I’m off to Mexico! I’ll be jumping into the world of freelancing. I will continue to tell stories through photos and film.
Advice for future interns: Be a sponge. Glean everything you can while you are here. Remember: This is NPR. Help your teammates get a story out. Take the opportunity to meet people outside of your desk. I asked to shadow the visuals team at NPR Music for an afternoon and it was pretty awesome.
