ITS A PARTY!
MCASB teens work on the final project for the opening of the new exhibition “Teen Paranormal Romance”
MCA teens jump in to the mind of a curator and put together their own exhibitions
MCASB Teen Insiders Project at the Hammer Museum
January 2015
MCA Teens took over the Hammer Museum in LA to visit their Jim Hodges exhibition. Getting our own personal tour of the exhibit, we got to have an indepth discussion of the art.
During our Architecture Themed Month at the Museum of Contemporary Art's TIP, we visited local AB Studios, an architecture firm with big plans. They showed us everything from interior design to their big plans for the new Children's Museum.
The Teen Insiders Project Santa Barbara visited Can(n)on Studios to visit the work space of 4 working artists. They gave us an inside look on the life (both good and bad) of an artist.
This video captures the Teen Insiders Project 2013-14. Get a glimpse of the Insider's unique perspectives and individuality. We had such an epic journey. Can't wait for next year!

March: Performance Art
This month the Teen Insiders Project discussed performance art. We looked briefly to the past, starting with the Futurists. Mainly though, we thought about performance art as it is today. We talked to Patrick Melroy, artist and founder of Uppur Bunk, the art collective that stages neo-happenings around town and participatory art performances.
For our hands-on field trip we worked with the contemporary theatre company Proximity. The Insiders utilized their bodies as a medium for expression by translating their own ideas and writing into movement, and bravely "performed" in front of the group. Here are some images to prove it...
February: Collecting
TIP visited the incredible contemporary art collection of Jacquelyn Klein-Brown. Mrs. Klein-Brown lives among works of art. From the work of Jack Pierson, Ed Ruscha to Jenny Holzer, it was incredible to be exposed to her collection.
January: Architecture
"The difference between art and architecture is that architecture is art with rules."
- Josh Blumer
Over the weekend TIP went to AB Design Studio were Josh Blumer, co-owner and head architect of AB Design Studio gave us a tour of their offices. He showed us architectural drawings of buildings and shared anecdotes about the amount of time and work it takes to create a building. He gave us a tour of an architectural site currently under construction (see photos). We were very inspired (to say the least).
December: Photography (continued...)
For our Saturday field trip we had a private tour of wallspace gallery from director, Crista Dix. She talked about the artists she represents and showed us beautiful prints from her archives.
Then we headed over to the La Chambre Photographique, the studio and art gallery of Santa Barbara-based photographer Lindsey Ross. Ross makes tintype photographs. We got there just in time to observe her taking a portrait of a friend. This was incredible to see!
December: Photography
At our Wednesday meeting we had a guest speaker, MacDuff Everton. Everton is a commercial and fine art photographer who spoke about his life and work. An amazing storyteller, Everton has traveled the world capturing epic and beautiful moments in nature and of people through his photographs. He has published numerous books including one that traces the stories of the modern Maya. His most inspiring story… (besides accounts of being a knife thrower in a traveling circus), was how he started taking pictures. While hitchhiking at 17 he picked up a camera that a traveler had discarded, and the rest was history.

We also watched a film by the artist Agnes Varda called Ulysse. Ulysse looks at the subjects in a photograph of hers from 1954.
We love Fandors blurb describing the film, "She tracks down two of her three former models (the third is a dead goat) to find out if the picture still means as much to them as it does to her, only to discover they have no memory of it at all. This leads to Proustian ruminations on the succession of selves and the mystery of images. Viewing another photo of himself from the same period, her model says, "I remember the jacket, but I don't remember the person." Frustrated in her attempts to understand its hold on her, she digs through the records of that period in history and her life, until ultimately the picture seems to be about everything except what's in it."
Another post is in the works,

TIP at Cannon art studios. We met artists Kimberly Hahn, James Van Arsdale, Christopher Ulivo, and Zack Paul.
November: Being a Working Artist
So what does it mean to be a working artist today? And to begin with, shouldn’t we have an understanding of what contemporary art is? During our monthly meeting through readings and a group discussion, the definition of contemporary art became a little more understandable. Our best definition – Though practically impossible to define, contemporary art is the art of our time; it acts as a voice with which to mirror contemporary culture and society; and uses diverse mediums.
What better way to learn about being a contemporary working artist than talk to the source!
This week we had two guest speakers, Santa Barbara-based artists Christopher Silva and Nathan Hayden.
Christopher Silva works in an array of mediums, from photography to sculpture. He talked about the so-called “art world,” explaining that “people talk a lot about the art world like there are big gates surrounding it with all these secrets inside. Well there’s not, and the only secret is that we all are in the art world. Don’t think that you are not. Don’t let people be the gate guards. The art world is open.”
One thing you might not know about Silva: He runs an alternative art space in Goleta, CA, called The Thrift Store.

Our second speaker was the artist Nathan Hayden. “Take advantage of spaces,” he told us. Having grown up somewhat isolated in rural West Virginia, he had a lot of time to observe his surroundings. He describes himself as a drawer, working sometimes on large installations and wall drawings. He passed around a couple of his small drawings on paper. His work is very detailed, and seeing his work in person gave us a chance to see the attention he gives it.
Two things you might not know about Hayden: He often makes his own paints out of natural substances, and he dances for one hour everyday to illicit visions that lead to inspiration for his drawings.

It was inspiring to hear, from working artists themselves, how their passion for art lead them from one thing to the next, even when times were difficult. Art-making is so often a reflection of one’s own experiences and culture.
Next stop, Cannon Art Studios in Goleta, California!
