Yeah unfortunately I don't really like The Ribbon Hero.
Does it have otokonoko (cv. uchiyama)? Yes and that's all there is.
trailer for Ribbon Hero is out so my rushed impression at 3am
um a magical girl transformation? okay. I'll need some time to warm up to the idea, but it's interesting choice of hair colour for what it (doesn't) represent (not exactly Ama-iro huh?). Haha what if the magical transformation includes gender as well that'd be a cliché right
Huh the CV is not a pro is she (nope, a face actress, not VA) Can't really comment on the quality because the acting is taking me out
Reincarnation? No, cyborg arms…
I like the villain's (?) design give me the toxic yuri
There's a mecha too, on top of the cyborg arm, from a seasoned Toei writer. Adjusting my expectations to Tokusatsu (i guess i was expecting a more faithful fantasy setting instead of a sci-fi one?)
Honestly my heart skipped a beat when I see Komura Junko's name under Script (Adaptation). I like RPPT but I haven't seen her Precure work and the recent disappointment in Gavv is still fresh. But I suppose she still has more plus than minus overall so I won't worry about nothing. She should be able to handle a smaller cast of characters. In this case, the original story skeleton could be a double-edged sword in that it guarantees an adventure, but not necessarily an updated modern take on gender roles and expression. Keeping my hope at the lowest on any nonbinary discussion.
The visuals and designs look fantastic. Just that it's kinda generic fantastic so it may just be a good magical girl/toku hero film and not a profound film with twisting plots and insightful dialogues… It's top-notch in every standard, I am just being unfair. I sincerely hope it blows my mind.
thinking again if making Sapphire a magical girl does defeat the point... It's probably more an aesthetic choice than she actually receiving enhanced combat skills via magic (she better already be a competent fighter)
My least favourite scene in the manga was when Sapphire was fighting a group of assassins and had the upper hand, but lost the edge when her male heart was taken. I was like, you don't lose a skill when you lost one half of your gender. A very important lesson 11-year-old me took from reading Princess Knight is that gender should not define your personality, skills, or resolve. So if Ribbon Hero's magical transformation involves gender along with power like I entertained, isn't that deviating from what I wished for? My vision is that gender shouldn't matter. But people are totally valid for feeling empowered through transition too.
But when I think Ribbon Hero is a henshin hero, I don't think of the protag as two different people pre- and post-henshin. If anything, the MC's resilience is what unlocks the potential of the suit. Why do I think that? Is it the language? Osmosis from a boy-oriented show? Is it the suit material? Cartoon vs. live-action? Is it because magical girls often takes on a new identity in the magical realm with their power but riders have to learn to harness the belt's destructive power?
I don't hate the magical girl genre at all but I've stopped being charmed by it after I turned eight. Pretty Cure was a turning point. I was very excited for the new magical girl show after DoReMi ended only to see them punching bad guys instead of casting spells. I felt duped and that the characters were unnecessarily endangering themselves without proper gear. and it's absolutely stupid to fistfight when they always cast a lightning strike to kill the MOTW at last anyway. So I switched to watching Kamen Rider. which is a total tall tale. I was charmed by Mermaid Melody, Sugar Sugar Rune and LRRH later before I hit puberty - stories where the magical girl persona was their original identity. so I literally only had problem with Pretty Cure haha.
Second trailer is out
two comments only:
this is how it can still be toxic yuri
CV: 內山昂輝
Yeah unfortunately I don't really like it

I alreadly turned my excitement and expectation down to zero. i think it's just... boring. There was a LOT going on and the art is beautiful but I don't know what the fights are driven by emotionally half the time (remember it ISN'T a problem for your antagonist to be a mindless force of nature) The worldbuilding/monster mechanism isn't explained very well until three-quarters into the film. There was a lot of tell, don't show in the earlier chapters that I wanted to forgive.
How does a movie with four cute girls not have a single well-writern yuri. Like, you got the most classic archetypes even, the best friend, the nemesis and the tsundere. War crimes can be excused if you have good yuri. Pine be confessing outright and where was the build-up??? Have we seen her directly influenced by Sapphire's heroic act? Was she ever part of it? I'm being harsh to Sapphine I'm sure.
I guess Velvet's character is supposed to be a surprise to the audience, which sort of is, unless you've heard uchiyama's comment and are partial to his actor like I am who never saw him, or wish he was, a pure villain. He's a less pathetic Syril with more drip to me I'm sorry. I'm never getting over that drama queen getup was actually a BUREAUCRAT UNIFORM.
With Cosmic Kaguya, it was very obviously a TV anime stitched into a film and Ribbon Hero was supposed to be viewed as a cohesive film, but cut itself into chapters that if adhered to the episodic nature and a simpler, more traditional hero's joruney/road trip format would only be salvage instead of a return to its supposed format? TRH has the age old directorial debut syndrome where it bites off more than it can chew.
I do not doubt the crew's respect towards the original manga and its influences, but it's so far off from the the theme of Princess Kinght, yet failing to tell an interesting original story.
