I've seen a lot of people argue that Jim can't go back to being human because he needs to accept himself and accept who he is as a troll. But where was this sentiment when he was human? When he was being constantly told that he is not good enough because he's human? When he was being called weak and he was being guilt-tripped by Merlin?

Why does he need to accept himself now, when he's stuck in a form that someone else designed for him, a form he was manipulated and abused into taking, but when he was human, and he was the most himself that he's ever been, it was okay for him to feel that he's not good enough?

Tbh I didn’t get the whole “acceptance” part. Before the turn, Jim did not seem guilt-tripped to me! He seemed like a boy who had to face a difficult choice, but who also knew the full impact of said choice (as much as that was possible). He took some time for himself in the bathroom and thought long and hard about it. 

Then he made his choice.

After he turned troll, it’s perfectly clear that he needed some time again to adjust to his new life. However, all of a sudden he wanted to avoid taking the time! He wrestled Aaarrrgghh in the backyard, played Hide-and-Seek with Claire, tried having a “normal” dinner with his mom, then immediately left angry and confused without even looking into a proper mirror. He then progressed to visit places he loved to go as a human, which in itself is good for processing the change, but...he went there bitter and desperate. It’s like he stopped sticking with his choice the minute it showed effect. He could have gone to his mom and said: “Mom, leave me alone for a night, I need to figure this out. Don’t call me, don’t come looking for me. I’ll be back when I’m ready.” I expected doubt on his side like “did I really do the right thing?” and that would have been perfectly fine. But it’s like there was immediate regret...which I don’t really understand. Didn’t he think about the consequences turning troll would have for his school efforts? Didn’t he suspect his skin could be changing since that is the defining troll trait?

I mean, he could have gone to Arcadia High to tell himself: “Okay, I chose saving the world over a normal career. This is it, brace yourself and say goodbye.” But somehow Jim absolutely wasn’t ready to say goodbye to humanity anymore. I deliberately say “anymore”, because I thought that he previously was! 

It’s not like Merlin pushed him into the black fluid! He told Jim about risks and side effects of becoming a half-troll beforehand like a doctor. In my perception, Draal was a much worse mental opponent back in Season 1. The way I see it, Jim made a choice, then didn’t deal with it. This made him moody and unbalanced, so the others had to help him get his shit together before the Morgana-GAU. But the way Jim jumped into the Darklands alone before, I pretty much thought he had his own shit together. Sure, later he “regretted” that decision - while we all know he’d do it again! So what is so different about turning troll? Why does turning this evoke such a different reaction in him?

I disagree on all parts.

Simply because: Jim never had a choice. He was never given one.

Telling someone “Well, you could turn into a troll or all your loved ones die.”

is not. a choice.

Throughout the entire series it becomes clear that Jim has a little bit of a sacrifice complex and feels the need to bear the weight of the world on his shouders. Merlin took advantage of his thoughts, plain and simple.

He was absolutely guilt-tripped, though. It's so incredibly obvious to me and honestly, I don't have the energy to explain it again.

There wasn't any choice. We already know from "Where is my mind?", "Unbecoming" and like... the rest of the show that Jim feels extremely responsible for his loved ones' well-beings and that he is ruled by his fear of them being hurt. It's the most obvious part of his characterisation. And Merlin took advantage of that fear.

The facts are that Merlin trapped a kid in his house, beat him unconscious, tied him to a chair, insulted him, told him he's weak, that he's not good enough, that no one will survive the war and that there's only one way to save them... Of course Merlin didn't push Jim into the bathtub... He didn't need to. His manipulation was enough to ensure that Jim wouldn't choose something else.

And there was immediate regret after Jim's transformation because he literally got separated from everything he loved as a human... He was hit with the crushing reality that he lost all of those things he loved.

He was also hit with instant regret because it was the wrong "choice". Because this is not what he wanted. Because this was never what he wanted and now he will have to be like that forever. And, unlike the time he went into the Darklands, he had no hopes of ever getting all of those things back, of being in the sun again, or of continuing his education, his career. His human life.
