I swear, so many folks in reading spaces will look at nuanced characters with canonical queer identities and say "well they aren't kissing and fucking each other ok page so they are not queer" MY GOOD GOD - y'all really need to re-evaluate your idea of queerness if a canonical ON THE PAGE SPECIFICALLY DESCRIBED AS SUCH asexual biromantic character isn't queer to you. Also, V.E. Schwab has confirmed that Eli is also biromantic. Eli is canonically extremely religious, and you know what happens to a lot of queer people who are raised in strict traditions and/or religions? THEY REPRESS QUEER ASPECTS IF THEMSELVES! Ever considered that there is a connection there at all?

the crows are so young. they're so young. they make fun of wylan for playing the flute and being a bad criminal. they love waffles. they mock kaz's bad haircut. matthias mentally addresses kaz only with insults for nearly the whole two books. they have all been jealous of each other showing other people attention at some point -- jesper is jealous of anyone kaz gives attention to. matthias is jealous of anyone nina gives attention to. kaz is jealous of how comfortable the others are with each other. wylan is jealous of kuwei flirting with jesper -- they're all insecure at some point. nina gets mad at them for eating her cookies. they're all horny and fantasize about their crushes while actively running for their lives. they all want to kill the woman they kidnapped because she's whiny. they tease inej for sounding philosophical. they have secret hand signals. jesper and nina make sex jokes all the time and love to make others blush. they spite each other. they threatened to tattletale on each other to each other. they compete over who has the biggest bounty on his head. inej uses "being a matthias" as an insult. kaz and jesper have a physical scrap and have to be pulled apart by an Adult. i adore them so much

I’m like almost done with book two and it took me embarrassingly long to realize that it’s really subtle but Kerch is a commentary on how fucking bonkers it is for a nation to be so religiously devoted to capitalism (cough cough USA). And for a while I was like well if all of these places are based on real culture, where’s America? I feel like no matter how downhill it’s gone we do have some semblance of culture and like. It’s been right there. The whole time. It’s the capitalism.
It’s the fact that the government of Kerch, even the people in most instances, care more about profit (which is seriously dwindling) than solving the social problems that plague their nation.
Like I wonder how much safer the barrel would be if the rich stopped caring about adding to their grossly large empires and realized that THEY are the solution to the problems THEY created.
