The movie was an adaptation of the lesser known Victor Hugo novel of the same name, and was directed by German Expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni. It was originally meant to star Lon Chaney, but by the time Universal managed to get the rights, Chaney had signed with another studio, so Veidt was cast in his place as the disfigured Gwynplaine. Mary Philbin (who had starred as Christine Daae in the Phantom of the Opera (1925) was cast as his blind love-interest Dea, and Olga Baclanova (most famous for playing the antagonist in Tod Browning’s Freaks (1932) played femme-fatale Duchess Josiana.
