✨The reward is in the WORK✨ • Talk about anticlimactic. I just got my physical #diploma and it was THE MOST lackluster experience ever. I thought I’d feel such reverence for this piece of paper that was paid for with hella money, blood, sweat, and tears but turns out I chucked it in my trunk and forgot about it for a few days. I’m proud of myself but I was proud before graduation. I was proud every time I actively stopped my test anxiety, every time I advocated for myself and others in lab, when I learned hard lessons, when I learned something new. I’m sure I’ll remember graduation and submitting my thesis and all that but the wealth of this experience is held in the small wins. @DdLovato was hospitalized yesterday after overdosing on heroine. Her friends, who saw her drug use worsening, had Narcan on hand just in case this happened. Narcan is an opiate antidote, used to temporarily reverse an overdose. Emphasis on temporarily because it’s important to still go the hospital after its used, as the antidote can wear off. It’s a nose spray and can be bought over the counter and has been saving lives left and right. Best of luck to @ddlovato during her recovery 💙🕊

“You should pray more”- The church has been and still is the staple of many black families, providing a place for worship and community. While there are many benefits of having faith, there are also harmful stigmas about mental health stemming from the church as well. Depression, anxiety, addiction are sometimes seen as moral failings, or the result of not being faithful enough. In the same way that faith isn’t expected to cure diabetes, prayer can’t cure mental illnesses. But it can certainly help so if you’re religious, tell your therapist and (good ones) will acknowledge and maybe even work it into your treatment!#minoritymentalhealthmonth (at Trinity Church)

#DidYouKnow That’s the time between the first ever psych PhD received and the first ever received by a black person. This person was Dr. Francis Sumner whose work focused on racism, higher education, and how psychological theories and methods were Eurocentric and prejudiced. A racial bias that is still felt 98 years later! He was also a fellow Black Greek as a member of Kappa Alpha Psi #minoritymentalhealthmonth #blackgreeks

#DidYouKnow That clinical depression is way more than feeling sad? #Depression symptoms include: weight loss or gain, numbness, restlessness, persistent headaches or stomach aches, sleeping too much or not enough, difficulty concentrating or with memory, constant fatigue and social isolation. It’s hard to connect all of these symptoms at first but for me its ALWAYS clear in hindsight. Journaling is a great coping skill AND  a handy way to stay on top of any mood or behavior changes that may pop up. Also trust your gut! If you feel off, take time and notice any changes or visit your doc with our concerns #minoritymentalhealthmonth (at Wall Street Plaza)

#DidYouKnow Blacks and Hispanics in the US used mental health services at about half the rate of whites in the past year, and Asians at about one-third the rate. There are a number of reasons for this, including stigma, cost, discrimination, and lack of #culturalcompetency. It took a black psychiatrist to diagnose me with #ADD at age 24, and when I got to grad school, I did a final paper on how common it is to misdiagnose ADHD/ADD in black girls. Diagnosis and treatment changed my life and allowed me to excel and grad school to increase the access to diagnosis and treatment to more people who look like me! #minoritymentalhealthmonth (at Teachers College, Columbia University)

It’s Minority Mental Health Month! 🎉 Fun fact: it was a study looking at how suicide rates differ between whites and blacks that made me realize psychology was my calling. Basically the cultural differences between the white researchers and the black study sample resulted in a theory that was largely untrue: that suicides occur less in black communities than in white ones. As you can imagine that has led to MANY harmful misconceptions and I realized the only way to have better studies about black people and mental health is to reach the level where I’m running the studies myself! I still have a ways to get there but for now, I’ll be sharing minority #mentalhealthmisconceptions in honor of #minoritymentalhealthmonth ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾 Let me know what minority groups I should research and share facts about! Minority is a BIG umbrella term so that includes #asian #nativeamerican #lgbtq #homeless #undocumented etc. So let me know!

What does travel DO for you? I LOVE to travel, it’s my favorite form of self care. I get something different from all the trips I take, and the trip stays with me for a good long time. #Banff Canada gave me so much more than I was expecting and I’m so thankful I didn’t let my #anxiety talk me out of going. This trip was a reunion for my college friends, who are spread around the country being being the incredible and intelligent women that they are. They remind me that I can be successful and silly, smart and sweet, and that there is still some good in the world. Thanks to the Wolf Pack and Canada for the great memories and reminding me that I still deserve to have fun, even when my #anxious adult brain tells me I shouldn’t. #onetimeatbanffcamp (at Cirque Peak)

The definition of weird is: of strange or extraordinary character. Being weird is what makes you you, and helps you find your people. My people are extraordinary to say the least, and without them I wouldn’t have taken the most insane trip ever, pushing myself up several large and scary mountains in Canada. Moral of the story: be weird, find your people, live your truth.

What am I, someone who is allergic to EVERYTHING, asthmatic AF with no upper body strength and only moderate lower body strength doing on a mountain right now? Quite literally climbing out of my comfort zone! It’s a lot easier to try something new and scary when you’re surrounded by people you trust and care about you, like friends, family or anyone in between. I’m terrified and my lungs are on strike but I’m so proud of myself. Because I’m doing it. I’m scared as 💩 but I’m doing it but I literally climbed a mountain anyway! #courage 🗻
